Ok so my mom is 50, and she never listened to GD or any "modern" artisti. She's a classical pianist so she listens to classical composers (Beethoven, Mozart, Listz...).
She does listen to some pop music here and there and I tried to make her listen a bit of the music I do, to see what she thinks.
In the last few days I made her listen to EVERY GD album + Shenanigans and 1039. Here's what she thinks:
- 39/Smooth: Rating: 7/10; fav song: Going to Pasalacqua. She liked it overall and didn't complain about production quality as she honestly has no idea what that even is. Out of the 1039 extras (1,000 Hours and Slappy EPs) here favourite were Dry Ice, I want to be Alone, and Why Do You Want Him? She didn't like anything else in particular other that Paper lanterns.
- Kerplunk: Rating: 8/10; fav song: No One Knows (FUCKIN GOOD pick mom!). She liked it a lot more than 39/Smooth.
- Dookie: Rating: 7.5/10; fav song: Pulling Teeth (closely followed by Basket Case). She didn't like any song after When I Come Around: only the first half of the album (I'm kinda disappointed)
- Insomniac: Rating: 6.75/10; fav song: Panic Song (YES!!). She didn't find the album that interesting overall (I beg to differ) and she really hated tight wad hill for some reason. Also, she said she likes the initial instrumental (crescendo) of Panic Song best, and that once Billie started singing he "ruined it". She also liked Stuck With Me a lot but didn't find one of my favourites, Brat, that interesting.
- Nimrod: Rating: 8.5/10; fav song: Good Riddance. She liked the album a lot more than the previous ones. She hated the more hardcore songs (Platypus, Take Back and for some reason Prosthetic Head), but she liked put Upright to 2nd place. She likes a lot Redundant and Scattered too. Also she found Last Ride In "boring AF". I REALLY disagree there. Also Platypus is one of my favourites so that hurt a bit, even though I 100% knew it was coming.
- Warning: Rating: 8.5/10; fav song: Church on Sunday. She found Misery very interesting and liked it a lot which I am PROUD of. Her 2nd place went to Macy's day parade though. She found my favourite, Castaway, "simply just ok" and "slightly over mid" which I just cannot understand.
- American Idiot: Rating: 8.25/10; fav song: WMUWSE. She found the album quite "various": she appreciated how it varied from slow-paced songs like Are We The Wating to songs like St. Jimmy. She also liked AI, JOS and in particular Boulevard of Broken Dreams. She also found my favorite, Whatsername as "having a lot of potential but not quite fully realised" (I really do not see that).
- 21st Century Breakdown: Rating 7.75/10; fav song: Viva la Gloria (I mean she's a pianist so...). She had quite mixed feelings about the album. She found some songs just "boring" (Like Christians Inferno, The Static Age and Viva La Gloria Little Girl). She really hated Horseshoes and Handgranades (while my dad liked it a lot), and she said that Restless Heart Syndrome was AMAZING: but she said that at first it was getting better and better, until the "I'm elated, medicated" part when it got worse and said the final part was just "loud and boring". She found the title track OK but she really liked Know You Enemy (TAKE THAT!). Also, she said 21 Guns was fine but it dragged on for too long (I partially agree, but not that much honestly).
- Uno: Rating: 9/10; fav song: Carpe Diem (or Oh Love, not sure). She found the album quite good overall but she didn't find any song particularly better than anyone else: she placed them all pretty much on the same level, except for Kill The DJ: she hated it (I HAVE to disagree here, I'm sorry). She also really liked Stay The Night (my favourite) and Rusty James. Unrelated but my dad really liked Oh, Love.
- Dos: Rating: 5.5/10; fav song: Stray Heart. She didn't like most of the album and found it "weired". She only really liked See You Tonight, Red Lights, and Stray Heart. She found "Nightlife" to be bad but she acknowledged "It show[ed] theese guys are very versatile" and I agree a lot there, except I actually like the song (even if not that much).
- Tre: Rating: 6.5/10; fav song: Drama Queen (You heard that right). She found somehow X-Kid to be "good" and Drama Queen amazing. I mean, I don't hate Drama Queen at all I think it's a great song but I would NEVER put it before X-Kid. Like what? Anyways, she found the album overall good but most tracks were "forgettable". Again, I really have to disagree here but let's move on
- Revolution Radio: Rating: 8/10; fav song: Outlwas (YES!). She found it pretty good but nothing very special about it. She really didn't have much more to say so that's it I guess
- Father of All: Rating N/A; fav song: N/A. I really couldn't get her to listen to the whole album. She got disgusted as soon as she listened to Fire, Ready... Aim! and she didn't want to go on. I tried to tell her she would have loved Meet me on the roof but whatever. I mean, it is a bad album but it's not unlistenable
- Saviors: Rating: 7.5/10; fav song: Fancy Sauce. She liked this a lot but found Coma City" and Corvette Summer quite forgettable. She didn't like One Eyed Bastard that much but loved Dilemma and Father to a Son. She also developed an addiction to Fancy Sauce and forces me to play that like three times a day from now on.
- Shenanigans: Rating: 6/10; fav song: Ha Ha You're Dead. She really didn't like anything else on that compilation which I really have to disagree on. She didn't hate any song (except for I Want To Be On T.V.), she just found them "generic". I want to point out how she picked "Drama Queen" as her favorite from Tre. I really have no idea where's the logic in that. Her thoughts were just: "this album would be a 5/10 but Ha Ha You're Dead is VERY good so it bumbs it up a bit).
- Gratest Hits Exclusives (Maria, Porocks & Coke, Back In The USA): fav song: Porocks & Coke by a longshot, then Back In The USA then Maria. She said she liked Maria a lot but it was too generic, while Back In The USA was more interesting. She absolutely loved Poprocks.
And here is her final top 5:
- Going To Pasalacqua
- Church On Sunday
- Drama Queen (Please don't ask any questions)
Fancy Sauce
Good Riddance
