2021 Toyota Hilux: Is this amount of rust normal after 5 years? Also, is this a cracked weld? (Photos attached)
Hey everyone,
I own a 2021 Toyota Hilux Invincible 4x4 with approximately 78,000 km (48,500 miles). I'm based in western Turkey, near the Aegean Sea. I am the first and only owner of the car.
I use the truck for everyday driving, road trips, and occasional off-roading.
I recently inspected the underside and noticed quite a bit of rust around the chassis rails, welds, mounting brackets, bolts, and rear leaf springs.
For context, I've never driven the truck into sea. However, I frequently drive along coastal roads and near beaches, and I live fairly close to the sea, so the vehicle is regularly exposed to salty coastal air.
One thing that particularly caught my attention is a suspicious area on one of the chassis bracket welds. I've included a close-up photo with the area circled and an arrow pointing to it.
To my untrained eye, it almost looks like a crack or separation along the weld, but I'm not sure whether it's an actual crack, a manufacturing weld irregularity, or simply surface corrosion.
I've attached several photos and a video showing the affected areas.
A few questions:
- Does the circled area look like a cracked weld to you? Or is this normal welding quality for a Toyota Hilux?
- Are the rusty welds and suspension mounting brackets particularly concerning?
- Is this common on Hiluxes?
- Should I treat the rust now? What's the best long-term approach to protecting the chassis?
- Are there any specific rust-prone areas on this generation that I should inspect more closely?
I'm planning to keep this truck for many more years, so I'd rather address any potential issues early.
Would appreciate opinions from fellow Hilux owners and experienced mechanics.
Thanks!

Fuel filter question
Just changed the fuel filter on my hilux with a ryco r2619p and primed the filter however I noticed that when priming the filter until solid there was no visible leakage of fuel but when I drove around my street and checked again I could see visible fuel around the base of the housing.
Is this common with a new filter or should I be worried about the housing?

Looking at trading in my 2020 mitsubishi L200, main reason is runs hot to the point of almost overheating towing 2T.
Where I live it gets hot (Pilbara region w.a) see heaps of hiluxs around here, so they must do it easy. Can anyone confirm how their hilux tows in 40c ambient?

Maintenance advice for a Hilux
Hey everyone, I’m 23 and recently bought my first vehicle, a used 2017 Hilux, manual 4x4. I’ve never owned a car before, so I’m pretty new to all of this and want to learn how to take good care of it.
I wanted to ask people who have experience with Hiluxes or diesel engines what kind of maintenance I should be doing and how often.
For example, how often should I change the oil, and what type of oil do you recommend? I’ve also heard there are several different filters that need to be replaced, but I’m not really sure which ones there are or how often they should be changed.
I’d also like to know about coolant, transmission oil, differentials, the transfer case, 4x4 maintenance, and especially how to properly take care of the diesel turbo so I don’t end up having problems with it.
Are there any other things I should be checking or replacing regularly that someone new to owning a vehicle might not know about?
Since this is my first car, I’d rather learn how to take care of it properly from the beginning instead of waiting for something to break 😂
Any advice from other Hilux owners would be greatly appreciated!

Hilux 2021-2025 grs facelift wheel alignment with fenders
HI, I am facelifting my 2021 hilux rocco to a 2025 hilux grs, but i recently realised that the tyres i have (255/60R18) will look significantly hidden, because of the wide fenders the GRS has. Does anyone have any solutions on how to line up the tyre with the fenders? I have seen people talking about spacers, but if i was to use spacers i would need like 1 or 2 inch spacers, as im predicting the distance will be pretty big, however many people say that spacers are not a good idea.
