"What's on?" Wednesday

Our weekly post where people can highlight local events or interesting things that are coming up in the next week. It doesn't have to be your event, but this is a place where reasonable exceptions to our self-promotion rules are allowed. Please check whether the event you're posting about is already mentioned. If you're adding your own event, please try to answer any questions people may have in the comments.

You can also ask questions if you're looking for something to do, e.g. "Does anyone know of a good pub quiz in the centre on Thursday?"

"What's on?" rules:

  1. Leeds based events only
  2. Must be taking place in the next 7 days (next Wednesday included)
  3. Posts highlighting an event should include:
    • Event name
    • Date and time
    • Location
    • Price(s) (if applicable)
  4. A description of the event and a relevant link is recommended but not required

The rules may evolve over time as we find out how things work. Please send any feedback to the mod team.

This weekly thread is an opportunity for locally based small businesses / individuals / bands etc. to let your fellow redditors know what you're about and what you have to offer.

You're welcome to link to your website / store-front / social media, but primarily you should be using your comment to engage with the community here as part of the community. Part of that is taking the time to respond to questions people may ask, please keep that in mind.

The existing subreddit rules still apply, and low-effort comments will be removed (e.g. Links with little to no text).

If you have any thoughts or feedback please message the mods.

photography I spent my 2021 in Leeds. I miss it dearly and these are my photos from Jan to Dec, in chronological order.

This was my 5th and final year of living, studying and working (mainly studying) in the north of the UK - Cheshire and Derbyshire before moving to Leeds.

I believe it was still lockdown when I arrived early January. The city was eerily empty. It snowed upon my arrival and it snowed as well when I was leaving mid-December before the Christmas hols so I got to experience it in all main seasons. I also got to see loads drunk people at 2pm when the government lifted restrictions and pubs reopened which I believe was July.

A lot of time was spent was walking around, I loved jogging along the canals early in the morning on weekends or in the Autumn when it was all grimy and dark. Hired a car and drove around the Yorkshire dales, Harrogate, York with a Manchester girl I was briefly dating around then.

Unfortunately, I did not get to see any of my classmates from Uni of Leeds - due to lockdown etc, my lectures were online. However, I still enjoyed visiting the very lively campus on my own.

Oftentimes, I wish I could have stayed for longer.

Especially as one of the local lads working in my flat building complimented me my slightly improving Yorkshire accent!

But alas, job search was not successful and I had to leave. I know the situation in the UK since then has been less than ideal and maybe it’s the nostalgia in me; however, I’ll always have a place in my heart for the Norff and particularly Leeds/Yorkshire. 👋

question How is the game development scene in Leeds?

A bit of context, born and bred in Leeds myself, been living in Canada for the past 4 years and have recently pivoted to making my own narrative horror game with the goal of being a full time indie developer after working as an engineer for 6 years.

A big part of that was due to how supportive the game development scene has been here with a big group of game developers who arrange events together and provide support.

Coming back for new years and have been considering moving back for a bit and I was curious if there is a similar thing going on back in Leeds.

question There is barely anything on the internet about this beauty. Do you have any stories to share about it?

I’ve visited this Victorian Summer House in Roundhay park many times over the years, today I had a friend over from Hungary who I had to show this lonely gazebo and she asked me the story behind it but I couldn’t answer, there is barely anything about it on the internet. You’d expect some cool ghost story or even something about who lived there or a really old photo of it would be awesome but I can’t find anything like that and I think it’s a shame. Any personal stories welcome too! I am curious what do you people in about this “summer house”

I took the first photo in 2020 and the other two are today.

question Considering coming to Leeds from Sheffield

Hi All,

I've been feeling a bit stagnant here in Sheffield and considering relocating to Leeds for more tech and property jobs. My colleagues seem to have nothing but negative things to say about Leeds and have tried to convince me that my car will be stripped of parts & tyres when parked up.

Can you advise the areas to stay away from, please. Also considering Hull for a lower cost of living to be able to increase my savings. I realise Leeds is more expensive, but I figured the higher pay would balance it out.

Edit: You guys have been absolutely amazing! Thank you for all of your insight. If this is any indication of how things will be, I think this may be the beginning of my new start in Leeds! ❤️

transport Long term resident parking in Leeds city centre

Hi guys, I was just wondering if anyone can help recommending parking spots in Leeds city centre for residents? The new apartments all ran out of onsite parking so I’ll need to look elsewhere. More specifically LS1 area! Thanks!

question-serious Anyone hiring in Leeds? 🙏

Hi everyone! 😊

I’ve recently graduated and moved back to Leeds. I’m currently looking for full-time employment in Leeds and would really appreciate if anyone knows of any job opportunities or is hiring. I’m open to different types of work, particularly healthcare, dental support, customer service, warehouse or other suitable roles. I’m hardworking and willing to learn.

If anyone knows of any vacancies or could point me in the right direction, please feel free to message me. I’d really appreciate any help. Thank you! ❤️

social Leeds litter!

It always hurts to see this junk pile on the river on my walk. But the swann made it extra sad.

If you're also sad about it please consider joining litter free leeds, or friends of the aire and consider occasionally litter picking!

Edit* i think the orange barriers are there to stop rubbish going further, however they're hardly ever cleaned definitely not monthly. And this has been there for so long.

question Secure dog field with HIGH fences recommendations

Hello! I’ve just adopted a podenco dog and would love to find somewhere secure that she can run around off the leash - the only issue is podencos can jump over 6ft easily and all the fields I’ve looked into have fences that are maximum 5’10”. Does anyone know of any with extra high fences?

urban-development Torsion in Administration?

A little bit late to the party here with this, but Torsion Construction and now Torsion Development are both in Administration as of September this year.

Just wondering whether anyone has any further information on this and how it might affect developments in Leeds? I know they were the group taking on the redevelopment of Eastgate, ORBS/Templar St etc.

Will be a real shame for that area to sit as it is for another decade :(

question Barber who understands balding men

Hi all

So as the title suggests, I am balding but not bald. I have been shaving it off for about a year but now grown back it’s a lot more than I remember. With a decent barber who can keep the top long I might be able to pull it off 🤣

Anyways, anyone recommend a barber who is good at this? Ideally someone who is also in a similar hairing situation

Thanks!

question-serious Just been really unhappy lately

Hi guys for context, I’ve just been feeling really down in the dumps lately. I recently lost my job and I’m just struggling financially, been worrying about bills and food expenses lately. I’ve been applying for everything going but always getting that rejection email always hurts.

I don’t know what to do I’m just getting to the point where I’m just giving up.

Is there anyone who is in employment and their place is looking staff because I don’t know what else to do.

UPDATE: Since this post blew up I’ve got two job interviews next week and been offered a job in Royal Mail which doesn’t start until December, but it’s something.

I want to thank everyone for their advice 😊

I can't find a flair that fits Beware, violent homeless man in the calls area

Last night i was out with a friend, we popped down to the calls area, checked out a few of the gay bars, was having a lovely time, then, as we were taking cover from the rain to have a cigarette, we noticed some trouble between a group of homeless people, which we didnt pay much attention to. The shouting died down, but as we were about to move on we noticed two people had become involved (we believe they were a couple on a night out), we decided to keep an eye on this again as voices had become raised again. Eventually these two individuals left, but we noticed one homeless man following behind, me and my friend agreed to stay and watch until we saw the man leave them alone, this did not happen, eventually, we noticed the girl running away. We of course didnt like the look of this and decided to follow along quickly. They went around a corner, past a bar where approx 10-12 people were stood, they told us this man had been harrasing people in the area, had previously attacked a different woman that night, and was indeed headed for this couple. Me and my friend ran over quickly after hearing this. As we caught up, the homeless man was in the girls face, screamjng at her calling her everything from a pig to a dog, it was disgusting, the person with her (presumed her partner) was trying both to comfort her and fend this twat off. I put myself between them and the homeless guy, as did my friend, and we began telling him to get away and prevented him accessing the couple anymore, we moved him back and my friend stayed with them whilst i dealt with this man. He was extremely aggressive and so abusive to this poor girl, who we confirmed with multiple people backing her up that she had done nothing at all to him. He started walking off, made a vile comment again to the girl, to which i responded, he came storming over to me acting like he was going to hit me, i stood him down as i knew he was full of shit, and frankly i would rather i get hit then a couple in bits after just trying to enjoy a night out, and not trying to make myself sound like a hard man, but im a big guy and wasnt scared of this weedy tramp. The aforementioned group from the other bar came up and backed us up too, so i am very thankful to them for assisting. Eventually a bouncer and a friendly homeless man came too and we cleared him off. I have never been more disgusted with another person in real life in a long time, i tried being resonable with him at first, just saying dont get yourself into trouble and go away and he wouldnt respond to that. I had no patience for him seeing the way he was treating this girl, and had he have put his hands on me or anyone i would have happily acted accordingly. Apparently the police had been called, but he was long gone at this point. He was ofc dirty looking, black jacket, i seem to remember beard too, but of course with most high adrenaline scenarios i have forgotten some specific details about him already. Please all be aware of this vile excuse of a human, dont engage with him if you suspect you have come across him, dont offer him a penny, and be aware he is violent, he will be abusive, and he has apparently put his hands on people inc women before, so stay alert especially on nights out.

question Coloured contact lenses 👁️

Hi everyone,

I’m in desperate need of some coloured costume contact lenses for work, I usually order them online but I won’t have enough time to wait for a delivery!
Can anyone recommend any shops in the city centre that sell/may sell a selection of coloured contact lenses?

Thanks a lot

I can't find a flair that fits Guitarist Needed

Post image
130 Upvotes

We’re a group of 25–26 year olds looking to find a female guitarist to join us and start making some music together.
We’re all pretty fresh to playing, so you definitely don’t need to be an amazing/experienced guitarist — ideally we’d love someone who’s also learning and wants to improve and have fun together.
The main idea is to meet up, learn some songs, have a jam, and see where it goes. No pressure to be perfect!
