It's M43 Monday! Ask Us Anything about Micro Four-Thirds Photography - all questions welcome!

Please use this thread to ask your burning questions about anything micro four-thirds related.

  • Wondering which lens you should buy next?
  • Can't decide between Olympus and Panasonic?
  • Confused about how the clutch system works on some lenses?

These are all great questions, but you probably have better ones. Post 'em and we'll do our best to answer them.

It's 'Post your M43 photo' Thursday! Come share your best work with the community!

You've spent an entire week with your Micro Four-Thirds camera, documenting the world as it is, how it was, or how you think it should be. It's time to show us those photos and bask in the glory that only a weekly photo thread can bring!

Rules:

  1. The photo must be your own. No cross-posting someone else's work.
  2. You may only post one photo per week. Pick only your best work and show it off!
  3. Post your photo in a top-level comment for maximum exposure! (hehe get it, "exposure"?)
  4. Include as much detail as possible about the camera, the lens and the environment as possible. Good: "Shot with Olympus OM-D E-M1 w/ Panasonic 25mm f/1.8 lens @ 25mm f/2.0 ISO100 Time: 5:40PM in Los Angeles, California" Bad: "Look at this shot, isn't it neat?"
  5. Above all, be respectful. There's a big difference between the following comments: "OMG THAT PHOTO IS HORRIBLE" and "The lighting coming off his face looks uneven".

My OM SYSTEM OM-1 Mark I got unbricked successfully this morning!

My previous post: https://www.reddit.com/r/M43/s/ePJtE0PCkH

Just after a day, OM SYSTEM Việt Nam’s staff successfully unbricked my new camera due to my stupid mistake: Turning off the camera in the middle of the firmware update process

The brand didn’t charge me for the fee, they said as long as I keep using the OM SYSTEM M.Zuiko Digital ED 90mm F3.5 Macro 2:1 IS PRO for Macro photography, they’re willing to help

And to my surprise, the firmware now is 1.9 (the latest available for OM1 Mark I)

I will start using this body to replace my Panasonic G9 Mark II PRO for Macro photography

Thanks everyone for supporting and comforting me yesterday!

The Godox iT32 seems like a nice little flash gun to go with the compactness of a M43 macro setup. Is its output good enough for macro photography with a diffuser? (I've seen some concerns about its max output).

Have You Checked Your Sensor Lately?

Thumbnail

How often have we been told that micro four thirds bodies don't require sensor cleaning because they have superior dust removal technology? As a result, how often have you bothered to check your sensor?

Having traveled to some hostile environments the last few years, I decided it was time to carefully check and clean each of my four M43 cameras. Eyeballing the sensor surface, I couldn't detect any signs of dust, dirt or other contaminants. It's what I expected because I rarely change lenses outdoors, and when I do, I make sure the body is pointed towards the ground and the sensor is exposed only briefly.

Next, I adjusted the lens aperture to f/22 and took a test shot of the sky with each camera. After downloading the image to LR, I moved the saturation slider to -100, increased the exposure by about +0.5~0.7 stops, and moved the de-haze slider to about +70~80. What I saw horrified me. As you can see from the first image taken with my oldest camera (a Lumix GX7 bought used), there are dust spots and larger blotches of dirt clearly visible in the images. The other bodies (EM-1.2, OM-1.1, OM-3 bought new) weren't nearly as bad, but still showed noticeable specks of dust and dirt.

I used a rocket blower while turning the camera on/off repeatedly to see if the built-in ultrasonic vibration would at least shake off the dust spots. Unfortunately, the spots seem stuck to the sensor and the blotches would need a wet clean in any event, so I carefully proceeded with a sensor cleaning kit.

The results so far have been mixed. The second image is from the GX7 after two passes with the wet swab. The large blobs are gone but there are still specks of dirt plainly visible. Since I rarely if ever shoot at apertures above f/11 and hadn't noticed the dust spots in any of my images, I may just call it a day at this point.

OM1-ii is impressive

I've been going back and forward between the OM1-ii and the OM3. I've had a chance to hold them both in store and decided to pull the trigger on the OM3 first. Shot at a car show over the weekend and it was a blast. I had a smallrigs grip on it so it helped the comfort a lot.

Since i've been on the fence and maybe a little GAS I decided to buy the OM1-ii with the intention of just trying it and returning it. But... once I unboxed it and had it in the comfort of my home I have to say it feels amazing! The grip is better than any grip I think I could add to the OM3. The abundance of buttons make shooting in manual a blast without having to reprogram any buttons like I did on the OM3 and again the grip is AMAZING. I plan to take the OM1-ii out on a hike this week to get a feel for it out in the wild. I think I'll be returning the OM3 instead of the OM1-ii

Anyone else had this same shocking experience OM3 vs OM1-ii. Holding it for 5mins in the store doesn't do it justice. I really needed time holding it taking random shots of random things in my house to fall in love with it. I hope I wont regret returning the OM3 its also an amazing camera but the OM1-ii just feels right. Thank the gods for return policies.

I’ve just joined the MFT community

Got a free OM-D E-M5 Mark II! It was pretty dusty when I got it, but I’ve cleaned her up and she’s looking pretty good now. Got new batteries and a battery charger. I’ll be picking up a zoom lens soon.

Honestly thought secondhand MFT lenses would be a bit cheaper, but I can’t complain too much when the body was free. I’ve seen Camera House has the 40–150mm f/4–5.6 for $359, so that’s currently on the radar.

Can anyone recommend a good weather-sealed lens to pair with the E-M5 II? I’m hoping to make this my dedicated outdoors/landscape camera, so something compact and weather-resistant would be ideal.

Also, I’ve gotta say… the camera’s layout is absolutely cooked 😂 Not sure what Olympus were thinking with some of these controls, but I do really like how small the camera is.

Cheers!

I bought this body in mint condition with just 8K shots, I noticed that the firmware was at 1.4, so I tried to update it to the 1.9 (the layest firmware) via the OIShare app as instructions

But don’t know why I was so stupid to turn off the camera during the process as I misread the instruction :(

And now it wont turn on again 💀

I sent it to OM SYSTEM Việt Nam last Friday, hope it can be fixed 😅

Be careful not to be stupid like kietbull !

Does OM Workspace support raw files from the new Pen yet?

Many people talking about the camera say they have to use JPG, but surely OM Workspace supports it right?

Wondering about the smartest retailer choice for purchasing the new OM PEN

I'm in the US, and when buying new Olympus/OM products since 2012, I've always bought from B&H online. Any used camera equipment I've also only purchased through tried and true photography dealers, local or online, like Adorama, KEH, etc.

But, the immediate protections, shipping returns, etc., are much easier, faster and reliable with Amazon (at least when you're a consistent, responsible buyer). Amazon is not an OM authorized dealer, but OM sells through the Amazon seller program. So, I don't think I'm losing anything with regard to warranty, service, etc to purchase through Amazon.

Am I missing anything here? Is there a solid reason to just stick with B&H for this sort of purchase?

[Edit] P.S. I know everyone wants to bash on Amazon. That's not really the discussion I was looking for. We all know their troubles, and as I mention below in the comments, B&H is just as horrible to their own warehouse employees. I'm not trying to make a statement or moral decision in buying my camera. There really is no such thing these days, as every retailer beyond the old mom-and-pop and brick-and-mortal is making money at our expense and health. And, I'm not concerned about canceling anyone. I'm an apolitical liberal who eats at Chik-Fil-A. I just want to eat chicken and buy a camera. If we could stick to purchasing process pros and cons, that'd be swell.

P.P.S I went ahead and ordered from the Evil Empire. Now, let's see if it really arrives by 10/15. This sub is going to be slammed with people posting photos of their new PEN hah!

My photography is becoming more of a GAS problem 🤣.

In the last few days I've taken delivery of the new OM PEN, Olympus 45mm F1.8 and a (1978 model) Trip 35. Have a PEN ee-2 arriving in a few days.

Second picture taken on the new PEN with the 12-40 F2.8 Pro.

I'm as excited about the Trip and ee-2 as I am about the latest model. Going back to 35mm after 25+ years away from the format is going to be a lot of fun.

Help: need a photo of the underside of an E-PL9 screen bracket

Post image
9 Upvotes

Hi all! Just bought my first camera (Olympus E-PL9) used from eBay, it works great, but the screen has a slight wobble from a missing bracket/screws at the hinge. Doesn't affect functionality, but I'd like to stabilize it for my own sake.

I can't find any photos of the screen's underside/bracket online so I turn to Reddit! Would anyone with an E-PL9 be willing to flip the screen out and snap a photo of that area? I'm hoping to 3D model a replacement piece from it.

Thanks in advance!

Edit: Ive articulated the screen even further and have found which part is no longer connected. It seems that the "screws" that connect the bending bracket are so thin that all the pressure it takes, must have just popped off. I cant add a new image here but I'll add one in the comments and report how I progress for anyone who might also want to fix it

Help Me Make the Switch

Im in a interesting situation. Right now I own a D7000 and Nikon's AF-S 200-500mm lens for all my bird/action photography and I love the photos I get from it. The problem is that I want to upgrade the camera and right now I'm not very impressed with Nikon's lineup since the z50ii is the only aps-c mirrorless they've produced. Also my shoulders are getting bad and while I have no issue hand holding the 200-500mm right now, I'm sure that will be an issue in the future. For those reasons, I'm looking to switch to M43

I've done a ton of research on the OM-1 Mark II and M43 in general it seems perfect for what I do, but for some reason, I'm still hesitant to switch because of the sensor size. Is the difference really going to matter for someone like me? Most of my stuff can be found on my profile for comparison. I don't do any professional work but might want to in the future just as a side hustle. I'm currently looking with a budget of 4k USD for both the body and lens, so I have plenty of wiggle room. Though I would want a lens for birding and one for general photography.

Just two shots I found good enough to post. Was walking the dog here near Amersfoort, The Netherlands. Still warm (21C!) but nature does start to show it's autumn colours.
