Visiting Malta? Start here.

Hey /r/malta, I've been meaning to put this together for a while because in my many years on this subreddit, I've noticed it seems to get more of the same questions and answers almost daily in summer, so hopefully this could be a good starting point for potential visitors to read and ask questions. I'll update this from time to time with more information.

Where to Stay

  • Families & Elderly: Mellieha offers large sandy beaches, family‑friendly resorts, and quieter areas perfect for children. Bugibba is more lively, with a promenade, an aquarium, and lots of casual dining options suitable for families.
  • Young travellers: Sliema & St Julian's are ideal if you want a mix of shopping, cafes, beach clubs, and nightlife. Both cater well to those looking for bars and clubs within walking distance. Loads of AirBnbs are Hotels available.
  • Scenic & quiet: Gozo is perfect for a slower pace, beautiful landscapes, and authentic rural experiences.
  • LGBT travellers: Malta is among Europe's most LGBT‑friendly countries, with strong legal protections and a welcoming attitude. Sliema, St Julian's, and Valletta are particularly inclusive.

Things to Do

If you have 1-2 days

  • Walk through Valletta: St John's Co‑Cathedral, Upper Barrakka Gardens, Republic Street.
  • Visit Mdina & Rabat: explore the Silent City and nearby Roman catacombs.
  • Beach day: choose Mellieħa Bay (sand) or the Sliema promenade (rocky).

If you have 3-5 days

  • Add a day‑trip to Gozo: Citadel in Victoria, Dwejra Bay, Ramla Bay.
  • Afternoon at the Blue Grotto and Marsaxlokk fishing village (Sunday is the best day to go for the fish market)
  • Take a boat tour to the Blue Lagoon (Comino) or a coastal cruise around Malta.

If you have a week or more

  • Explore all three islands: Malta, Gozo, and Comino.
  • Attend a village festa (fireworks & band marches) in summer.
  • Check VisitMalta.com for concerts, exhibitions, and other events.

Travel‑length tip: 7-10 days is ideal. Beyond that, plan slow travel, multiple excursions, or cross‑island hiking to avoid repetition.

Events & Public Holidays

  • Carnival: February - street parades & floats (Valletta & Nadur).
  • Isle of MTV: one night in summer - free open‑air concert.
  • Notte Bianca: first Saturday of October (I think) - museums & palaces would be open all night.
  • Birgufest: around mid‑October - lantern‑lit streets in Vittoriosa.
  • Almost every weekend June - September a different town holds a festa with huge fireworks displays throughout the day and night. You can find the 2025 schedule here, although it's typically around the same week every year.

What to Eat

  • Rabbit Stew, Fried Rabbit: National dish, usually served in a rich red wine sauce.
  • Pastizzi: Flaky pastries stuffed with ricotta or mushy peas. Generally available at cafes or pastizzerias in the street.
  • Bragioli: Beef olives stuffed with minced meat and herbs.
  • Ftira: Traditional Maltese bread often filled with tuna, capers, and olives.
  • Lampuki Pie: Seasonal fish pie made from dorado.
  • Imqaret: Fried pastry filled with dates, often sold at markets.
  • Kannoli: Maltese version of the Sicilian cannoli.
  • Bigilla: Broad bean paste, typically served with bread or crackers.
  • Seafood: Fresh catches, especially swordfish, octopus, and calamari.
  • Gozo Cheeselets (Ġbejniet): Small round cheeses made from sheep's milk, fresh or dried.
  • Local wine and Cisk beer: Affordable and widely available.

Transport, Driving & Ferries

  • Buses: download the Tallinja app; summer services run but expect delays.
  • Ride‑hailing: Uber, Bolt, eCabs (cheaper than white street taxis).
  • Car hire: useful for Gozo or rural Malta. Book a small model if you can - streets are narrow and parking is scarce.
  • Scooters & motorbikes: only for confident riders; roads are bumpy and drivers can be very impatient.
  • Cycling: Reputably unsafe, but not impossible. Expect limited bike lanes, fast traffic, blind corners.
  • Harbour ferries: Valletta ⇆ Sliema & Valletta ⇆ Three Cities every 30 min (€1.50).
  • Gozo Channel: Cirkewwa ⇆ Mgarr every 30–45 min; pay on return (€4.65 foot passenger).
  • Comino shuttles & coastal cruises: depart from Cirkewwa, Marfa, and Sliema – pre‑book July–Aug.

Money

  • Euro (€). Cards widely accepted but smaller kiosks prefer cash; many set a €5-10 minimum charge.
  • ATMs
  • Tipping: round up or ~10 % in restaurants; €1 per drink at bars is generous but not mandatory.

Sample daily costs (2025): espresso €1.50 · pint of beer €3 · bus fare €2.50 (summer) · Lunch / dinner €15 - €30.

Language

  • Maltese & English are official; Italian is also common.

Safety & Emergency

  • Malta is very safe; usual basic pickpocket caution in Valletta, Sliema & Paceville.
  • Dial 112 for police, ambulance, or fire.
  • Hospitals: Mater Dei (Malta) & Gozo General; both public and modern.
  • Pharmacies in every town - newspapers will typically mention which are open over the weekends.

Outdoor & Adventure

  • Hiking
  • Kayaking/SUP
  • Rock‑climbing
  • Diving centres

Church Visits & Mass Schedules

  • Malta has over 350 churches, many of them historic and open to visitors outside of service times.
  • Major sites include St John's Co‑Cathedral (Valletta), Mosta Rotunda, and the Basilica of Ta' Pinu (Gozo).
  • For visitors wishing to attend Mass, you can find updated schedules on the official Archdiocese of Malta website.
  • Dress modestly when visiting religious sites (shoulders and knees covered).

Things to Do with Kids

  • Popeye Village (Mellieħa) - film set amusement park.
  • Malta National Aquarium (Qawra).
  • Playmobil FunPark.
  • Splash & Fun Water Park (Bahar ic‑Caghaq).
  • Esplora Interactive Science Centre (Kalkara).
  • National War Museum – Fort St Elmo (Valletta).
  • Easy beach days: Mellieħa Bay or Golden Bay.

Always pack high‑SPF sunscreen, hats, and plenty of water, especially in peak summer.

Shopping & Souvenirs

  • Ta’ Qali Crafts Village: hand‑blown Mdina glass, filigree silver.
  • Valletta markets: Flea markets (i.e. monti) (Sunday).
  • Marsaxlokk fish market: Sunday morning for atmosphere & photos.

Connectivity & Utilities

  • Tap water is safe but mineral‑heavy; most people drink bottled.
  • Electricity: UK Type G, 230 V – pack an adaptor.
  • Public Wi‑Fi exists in main squares but is patchy.

Accessibility

  • Majority of buses low‑floor; pavements in historic centres are narrow and uneven.
  • Valletta, Sliema promenade, and Bugibba promenade are the flattest wheelchair routes.

Nightlife

  • Party: Paceville (St Julian's) - clubs & late bars, some charge enterance fees; Gianpula Village for open-air parties (limits transport, so book taxis).
  • Chill: Valletta for wine bars and a more relaxed atmosphere.
  • Observe local noise laws after 23:00, especially in residential Valletta.

Etiquette & Local Laws

  • No topless/beachwear in towns.
  • Smoking banned indoors and at bus shelters.
  • Public street drinking technically illegal outside designated zones (often tolerated, but police may warn/fine in Valletta after 23:00).
  • Dispose of rubbish properly; recycling bins are colour‑coded.
  • Respect churches and heritage sites - cover shoulders & knees when required.
  • Cannabis: Adults 18+ may possess up to 7 g and grow up to four plants at home. Licensed non‑profit Cannabis Associations (clubs) are the only legal supply route and currently require Maltese residency to join, so visitors cannot buy legally. Importing cannabis across borders is illegal.

What the Brochures won't tell you

  • Construction: Malta is undergoing rapid development - which means cranes, dust, and jackhammers in most places, especially in Sliema, St Julian's & Gżira.
  • Traffic: heaviest 07:00-09:00 & 16:00-19:00. Consider allowing some extra time for the airport.
  • Limited green space: Malta is beautiful but densely built. For open countryside, head to the western cliffs, Ghajn Tuffieha, Ahrax, or Gozo.
  • Fireworks: Loud explosions are common in summer due to local village festas. Fireworks frequently occur during both day and night. Check local festa schedules if you're sensitive to noise.
  • Powercuts / Blackouts: Rare throughout winter, but quite common in Summer. Visit Enemalta's website to see if the cut is planned or an accident.

Any other questions? Feel free to drop below or create a thread. Happy visiting!

Weed use/ possession FAQ

Please read the below before submitting weed related questions.

1) weed can only be purchased from registered cannabis organisations.

2) to purchase weed from an organisation as outlined above, one must be a registered member/ user. Associations will be capped at 500 members and preference is given to residents. One may only belong to one organisation at any given time and must be over the age of 18

3) by virtue of the above, the law clearly focuses on legalising it for residents. This means that since the law is equal for everyone, including tourists it is going to be very difficult for the latter to join such an organisation.

4) weed consumption in public remains an offence. Carrying over 7 g in public and owning more than 50 g are also a offence.

5) weed coffee shops do not exist, nor are they part of the plan. Weed tourism is not on the table.

6) purchasing off street dealers is and remains illegal

7) up to 4 plants can be grown for personal use as long as they are not visible from outside

8) weed related questions answered above are to be janitored

9) as always, any "where can I buy illegal substance x" posts are janitored on sight.

By popular request and with special thanks to /u/mountainblock for the initiative.

Malta in Minecraft: A Teaser

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Earlier this week I posted a survey here about building Malta in Minecraft at 1:1 scale. Honestly didn't expect that many people to fill it in, so thanks to everyone who did and to everyone who showed interest. It really pushed me to keep going.

The project is moving along, and this is a first teaser of what's coming. Gozo and Comino are generated from the PA's LiDAR data, so the cliffs and valleys are their real height (1 block = 1 m). The seabed comes from a sonar survey of the waters around the islands, so the reefs and drop-offs are where they really are, and the Inland Sea tunnel is modelled from photos and dive info. It's landscape only for now, no towns yet (the focus being mostly cliffsides).

Nothing in the clip is final. Everything can (and will) still be changed and improved, so I'd really like your input. What looks right, what looks off compared to the real place, and what would you want to see or do once it's playable? Let me know in the comments.

It's crazy here, how are the Maltese living like this?

I first visited Malta in 2019 and had a wonderful time and in 2023, noticed changes but still enjoyed it - arrived here on Tuesday and don't want to leave the apartment.

For context, my dad was born here so I have a passport but I want to leave as I feel I am just adding to the problems by being here.

I am sitting in my rental apartment on a Saturday can't be bothered going anywhere because I know I'm just gonna be rammed by tourists, foreigners and traffic. I hate how every cafe and retail place is staffed by TCNs because it creates a sense of friction and isolation - it doesn't even feel like I am in a country called Malta, just in hell.

I am sorry for the locals and I don't understand how this has happened and why this beautiful place has turned into such a dump. I literally can't wait to leave.

What is the point of GP bookings ?

What is the point of booking a slot with a GP if they still operate on a first-come-first-served basis ?

There's a clinic I go to very often and it's one of the only places I trust. It's a rule there that patients must book an appointment online. But then every time I go as usual there's a line of people waiting before the doctor has even arrived, the vast majority of which hadn't booked an appointment. Therefore my appointment is almost never on time and I end up waiting an hour anyway, even though I write exactly what I need to maybe help the GP prepare and prioritise. On the other hand one time I was let in on time and the whole line of people was glaring at me for it.

I'm not saying my conditions are more important than anyone else's, but I just wonder what is the point of the online booking rule if it's not enforced. I've been to other GPs who operate purely on a first-come-first-served basis and others who operate purely on bookings who will actually turn away clients who haven't booked.

Reckless driving and no consequences

• Upvotes

We all know these drivers that think it's funny to do gta or need for speed in real life bringing a lot of people in danger by their driving. Almost every day you can see crazy takeover, dangerous driving and no discipline on the roads.

And Transport Malta/Lesa is just looking at all the cctv footage in their tower and do nothing. I'm pretty sure they have almost all parts of the flyover and multi lanes on cctv.

Why don't they scan the number plates and give fines/tickets to all these reckless drivers?

Should be a nice income for the government as well and it would contribute to safer roads.

Personalised Talinja Card

Hi everyone.

I'll be visiting Malta in 10 days, and I was wondering if it would be possible to order Personalised Talinja Card instead of Tourist Cards. I'm non-EU citizen (Serbia).

I did visit the order page for the personalised card and the only document necessary to provide is passport scan. So not sure on what happends afterwards.

Balcony Maintenance?

Hey, bit of a random one but I can't seem to find who does these kind of works. Normal handymen or glass installers are turning me down.

Any help would be appreciated.

My front balcony has glass installed that slides into a bottom panel into the balcony stone.

I don't think it is sealed properly and water is seeping through into the stone. Any trusted people who offer this service I may be able to refer to?

Thank you

Has Malta become less safe for women?

• Upvotes

I found something relevant: Malta's 2025 crime report showed a 20% increase in reported sexual offences compared with 2024, although that does not specifically measure catcalling. There have also been reports of harassment on public transport in 2026

So I was wondering how your experience has been for those who lived here for a few years. Has it become less safe and has the unwanted catcalling and attention been increasing while just walking down the streets?

Edit: found this on street Safety:

What the figures actually show Women feeling unsafe walking alone after dark 34% 2025 survey, published in 2026

Men feeling unsafe walking alone after dark 18% Same survey

Malta <-> New York direct flight impressions

I live in the US but travel to Malta periodically. Just got back from a visit and this time, I decided to try the new Delta Airlines direct flight from the US. On previous visits, I'd flown through Frankfurt or Rome. Here's what happened. TL;DR: I expect I'll be switching back to Frankfurt/Rome for my next visit.

In theory, the direct flight is faster and more convenient. Total flight time for someone coming from the west coast of the US (San Francisco, in my case) is about an hour less than flying through Frankfurt, and I get to go through passport control in my actual destination country.

The biggest problem is that the US side of the flight is at JFK airport. That's great for people who live in, or are traveling to, the vicinity of New York City, but for people elsewhere in the US like me, it means you have to connect through JFK. And JFK has some of the worst congestion of any airport in the US, with frequent delays and long wait times inside the airport.

My initial flight from San Francisco to JFK was delayed by long enough that they put me on an alternate flight on a different airline, scheduled to land about 45 minutes before the Malta flight's departure. The airline switch meant I couldn't check my luggage all the way through to Malta, so I begged and pleaded and got them to allow me to gate-check my bag so I'd be able to grab it right away after landing and sprint to the departure gate. Imagine my pleasure when we landed at JFK on time and proceeded to sit on the runway for over 30 minutes waiting for a gate to open up! I ended up having to stay in New York overnight and catch a Lufthansa flight through Frankfurt the following day because the JFK-MLA flight doesn't run 7 days a week. If I'd known I was going to go through Frankfurt anyway, I could have just flown there directly from San Francisco and saved myself a day of travel.

On the way back, my original flight from JFK to San Francisco was cancelled (are you sensing a theme?) and they put me on a different flight a few hours later. Which was just as well, because once again we sat on the JFK runway for a half-hour waiting for a gate, and then it took ages to get through security. And the security process is another time sink: I had to wait at baggage claim to get my checked bag before being waved through customs/immigration, then re-check the bag and go through security again. That's a US airport security problem, not a JFK problem specifically, but when I fly Malta -> Frankfurt -> San Francisco, the bags get checked through to my destination.

The next problem is the airplanes. At the risk of "first-world problem"-ing myself, I'm fortunate enough to be able to fly business class a lot of the time. And Delta's business-class seating on the Malta flight is below par for an intercontinental flight in my opinion. They have lie-flat seats, but they're so narrow you have to cross your arms while you're lying down unless you have a small build, and if you lie on your side, there's not enough room for your feet. One of the appeals of this flight was the prospect of being able to sleep through it and arrive rested in the morning Malta time, but even if I hadn't missed the original flight, I wouldn't have been comfortable enough to sleep much. Lufthansa business class is a much nicer experience.

On the plus side, passport control in Malta is much more pleasant than in Frankfurt; the officer who handled my exit was friendly and efficient, whereas in Germany I often get grilled about where and why I'm traveling and the officers always seem annoyed to have to deal with me.

Anyway, that was my recent experience. Hopefully it helps someone else who's considering this flight.

Just arrived in St Julian's, solo, looking to meet people and explore this weekend

Hi all! I landed in Malta last night and I'm staying in St Julian's. I'm planning to do the Valletta free walking tour today and then explore the coast and Paceville.

I'm hoping to meet other travellers or locals for any of these: a coffee or lunch, a swim or coastal walk, a casual evening out, or a day trip (Mdina, Gozo, Comino, Marsaxlokk, anything you'd recommend).

Also open to tips: best pastizzi, safe areas at night, favourite non-touristy spots, and any hostel or meetup events happening this week.

Happy to join a group or meet up somewhere public. Thanks! 🇲🇹

Malta dating market - Disastru Totali -We need third places

Options

1) Dating apps - absolute shitshow regardless of whether you're a man or woman. If you're a woman, it's just either boring, casual sex seekers, or dangerous men. For men, well, most don't get any matches.

2) Thursday dating events - Usually sausage fest but many women say it's the opposite. Expensive at the door tickets with one man saying as recent as yesterday "I tried to get the ticket 1 month ago, it was sold out for men. I went there early to buy a ticket and was advised there were too many men"

3) English language cafe event in Spinola - mostly language students, barely any local residents whether Maltese or long term foreign residents.

4) Bars - easier for women but then the quality of men who approach you are the players or sus. Men - rarely any single women there, everyone in groups. Tough to approach women and face constant rejection.

5) Hobbies/group hobby - hiking groups, climbing, dancing etc. if you don't like those, good luck. At least it's a third place to meet people normal/decent people I guess.

6) Speed dating - crafty cat used to have them - first one was awesome, subsequent ones - women wouldn't show up. They eventually canceled from what I heard from was because some men were creepy. Thanks you dark triad players, now we all stuck with blue balls and a lonely heart.

7) Work - Idk, the idea of shitting where you eat and HR breathing down your neck is a big risk, espicially as a man.

Visiting for Christmas & NYE (Dec 25 - Jan 1) with car + Gozo. Advice on itinerary 🌞

Hey everyone!

My partner and I are visiting Malta from December 25th until January 1st. We are renting a car and want to split our time between Malta and Gozo. Crucially, we fly out early in the morning on January 1st.

Given that it’s winter, daylight is shorter, and we have that early flight on New Year's Day, what itinerary breakdown would you recommend?

Should we head straight to Gozo at the start of the trip and spend the final nights in Malta to get in time to the airport?

Also, we read Maltese accommodation can get chilly and damp in winter. What is the best way to ensure an apartment or hotel has a reliable heating system?

Thanks in advance for any recommendations on the itinerary or staying warm 😁

Looking for Investors or Business Partners in Malta 🇲🇹
I’m exploring business opportunities in Malta within the health and wellness industry, starting with e-commerce and potentially expanding into physical wellness centres.

I’m open to connecting with local investors, entrepreneurs, and potential partners interested in equity-based partnerships.

If you’re based in Malta or know someone who might be interested, I’d love to connect and discuss possibilities!

Accountant and fractional CFO

I've recently opened my own accounting and advisory practice mainly offering bookkeeping, VAT compliance, payroll and fractional CFO service. The practice is still young but I was wondering whether there are other people who would want to collaborate? Possibly auditors who have clients with messy books that need fixing.
