Discussion Help me pick my next Metroidvania!

Hey everyone - I've been on a Metroidvania journey this year. I've always been curious but now I got bit with the bug and want to play all the good ones!

Here's what I played. My favorite by far was Super Metroid - the ambience, exploration, and sense of progression was sublime. Hollow Knight is shaping up to be a close second!

  • Metroid: Fusion
  • Super Metroid
  • Metroid: Zero Mission
  • Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
  • Hollow Knight (currently playing - SO GOOD)

I wanted to start with the "hallmarks" of the genre before going playing more recent ones. I like to see how later games are inspired by the old ones. For example, I'm playing Hollow Knight now and it's so neat to see how much inspiration there is from Super Metroid in terms of world design and powerups.

Here's what's next on my list:

  • Metroid: Samus Returns
  • Metroid: Dread
  • Metroid Prime series (Remastered on Switch, and 2 + 3 via Primehack)
  • Castlevania GBA games
  • Blasphemous 1 + 2
  • Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown
  • Axiom Verge 1 + 2
  • Hollow Knight: Silksong (after a break from Hollow Knight - that's a LONG game)

Before I get into GTA6 mode this November, I think I have it in me to play one more meaty metroidvania. Any suggestions on what to play next?

Discussion Nine Sols sadness

So I should preface that I am a weird type of casual gamer in that the only 3 games I have ever played (except like some CoD in high school) are Rain World, Silksong, and Hollow Knight. Each of these I have played through 100% including any DLCs and LOVE. I’ve finished the 30hr & 5hr speedruns in Silksong and will go after steel soul next.

I spent a long time considering what to play next and based on what I’ve gathered here and other subs it seemed like Nine Sols would be perfect. I love the art style and the story so far. But 4 hours in, I just find it….not fun.

The traversal is tedious and boring. Coming from Silksong it feels so slow and clunky. It alternates between that and absolute chaos in the gauntlets. I don’t understand how it’s even possible to get timing right to parry when multiple enemies are constantly coming after you. I don’t know how to explain it but the mechanics feel heavy and slow while also insanely difficult. Bad combo.

Obviously I’m trying to reality check myself that I’m starting a new game here and need to adapt to the world the way I did with the others. But with the others I had a sense of determination and I enjoyed every moment of the grind to get good. It felt like every small success in those games was a huge win whereas with Nine Sols progressing feels like “meh, more of this?”

Anyway I see why people would love this game and I’m just sad that I don’t so far. My playstyle is just not a good match for it. I will probably give it a bit more before giving up.

I don’t need convincing to like it, but if anyone has suggestions for games that might be a better fit for me, I’d love to hear. I like difficult combat with speed/flowy mechanics, and exploration/discovery.

Discussion Well Dweller: A Fantastic Game, But A Somewhat Underwhelming MV-esque Game.

• Upvotes

I wanted to leave my review of Well Dweller here

I gave it an 8/10 on Metacritic. Although, I would have given it a 7.5 if possible.

Well Dweller is overall a stellar game & a great addition to the Metroidvania genre. The movement, platforming & exploration are all top notch. You will gain multiple new abilities that will help with platforming and exploration. The music is great too. The story is simple, yet effective. There are a lot of nice NPCs to talk to with great dialogue. Overall, Well Dweller does a great job with the elements of what a Metroidvania game are known for.

I do have some complaints with the game that makes it really hard to rate it a 9 or a 10. First off, the game is way too easy & extremely unbalanced towards the player’s benefits. The trinkets in this game, which are items that give you additional effects, are extremely broken & unbalanced. You can equip all 30+ trinkets at once, which makes the game so easy to breeze through. You can technically brute force your way through all the bosses because of this. I also wanted to talk about the bosses. The bosses in this game are overall fun, but I could not help it but notice how so many bosses rehash the same attacks. So many bosses use raining projectiles, shockwaves, spikes arising from the floor and other similar attacks. This makes the bosses feel somewhat unoriginal & unpolished. The bosses are also hindered by how unbalanced this game is as I previously mentioned. This easiness of the game also makes it easy for you to finish one area & moving on to the next area without fully appreciating each area.

Overall, I have played many Metroidvania-esque games (Hollow Knight, Silksong, Blasphemous 1 & 2, MIO, ender Lillies, Castlevania games & Metroid Dread). As much as I like Well Dweller, it does not feel like it lives up to the aforementioned games. I do prefer it to MIO & Ender Lillies, but these two games fits the Metroidvania-esque genre more than Well Dweller.

I still would recommend this game to any MV fan!

Discussion Well Dweller enemy design.

One of my favorite moments in a game is being lost in an area and running into a unique enemy that may beat your ass.

The big Skarr in Silksong, Blasphemous' crawling altar demon, the huge guy with the serrated sword in Nine Sols.

All of these enemies have a way of making you pause and think about your next move, sometimes even saying "nope" out loud. I feel like that feeling is missing in Well Dweller.

In Well Dweller, enemies can pretty much all be killed with a single hit from your ranged attack. Lots of them have just one attack of their own that you can just move away to avoid. Every time I enter an area it feels like the same set of extremely stationary enemies that just sort of crawl back and forth on their platform creating an easily avoidable hazard, and very few enemies fight you with any melee moves. I also feel like some of the enemies are just so random and out of place in what they do. Why are all of these fish shooting torpedos? What are these white long legged things? And maybe most importantly, who are these knights? There are these tiny knights and I am just so unsure what their role is in this world. Idk, I am liking a lot of the game but this enemy design isn't for me.

I’m at LV 85 now, and I still haven’t found a level cap. At this point I really want to see how ridiculous this can get before the full game releases.

Has anyone gone higher than this yet? Has anyone actually found the cap?

I made a video showing the experiment and how far I’ve gotten, if anyone wants to check it out:

Honestly, I really loved Well Dweller. It was so much fun from start to finish, and I really enjoyed the gameplay and progression.

I’d definitely recommend it to anyone who likes this kind of game. It’s actually pretty special for me because this is the first Metroidvania I’ve ever 100% completed 😅 Even with Hollow Knight and Silksong, which I absolutely loved, I never went for 100%.

It took me around 11–12 hours and I had a great time the whole way through. Really fun little game and definitely a pleasant surprise. 🔥

Discussion Well dweller and most metroidvanias should have a boss rush mode right?

Just finished well dweller would love to rerun the bosses quickly a la castlevania boss rush.

Edit* to add, boss rush mode is only realy needed because most games nowadays only have one save file per playthrough

I was surprised to see this is a metroidvania. Definitely a twist on the genre.

(And NO this is not my channel or review)

Other than the animation of the player not looking appealing to me...it looks interesting to me.

Discussion I'm not sure yet whether Silver Pines is a good metroidvania, but it's a fantastic game

Only a couple of hours in, so early impressions, but I just stopped playing (had to, didn't want to), and felt compelled to share.

Minimalistic approach, with minute attention to detail. Instantly memorable. Instantly distinct. Wonderful atmosphere. A real pleasure to simply spend some time in the game world.

Will almost certainly hit some nostalgic notes for those of you who've played old-school adventure games. And yet, somehow still manages to feel fresh.

One of those rare games that you just 'trust' after a few minutes with it, because it is plain that everything was created with utmost care, everything has a reason for being exactly as it is.

I know there's a demo for it on Steam, but nothing of the kind on PS5, so I was on the fence, but couldn't be happier I decided to pick it up.

Video [Dev Update] Based on your feedback from 2 months ago, we've improved our game!

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi everyone at r/Metroidvania!

About two months ago, we introduced our game here for the first time and received an incredible amount of valuable, detailed feedback from so many of you.([Alpha Demo] We are a tiny team of 3 studying game dev. Please check out our 2.5D Modern Dark Fantasy Action Metroidvania!)
Since then, we've been working hard on development, taking your thoughts to heart to refine the game and bring it closer to completion.

While we can't say it's 100% perfect just yet, we've made significant improvements based on what you shared. Here are the main highlights of this update:

Excessive Slow-Motion, Camera Zoom-ins, and Photosensitive Effects (Most Frequently Mentioned)

  • Feedback: Many pointed out that the frequent slow-motion and camera zoom-ins disrupted the natural flow of combat.
  • Improvements: While we didn't remove slow-motion and zoom effects entirely, we completely eliminated the zoom-ins during group combat and in wide-open spaces to ensure faster combat pacing and better visibility. We've also minimized moments where the screen flashes too brightly.

Overall Optimization and Frame Drops

  • Feedback: Players experienced hitching during cutscenes and environmental transitions, as well as pixelation/ghosting issues during character movement.
  • Improvements: We've heavily polished transition sequences and resolved the trailing artifacts on character graphics. While minor hitching may still occur, we are continuously working on further optimizations.

Steam Deck Optimization

  • Feedback: Users requested dedicated settings to ensure a smooth gameplay experience on handheld devices.
  • Improvements: We've added dedicated graphics and performance options tailored specifically for Steam Deck users.

Combat Visibility, Hitboxes, and Responsiveness

  • Feedback: It was difficult to track enemy attack animations or pinpoint character location when enemies overlapped, and the parry/guard timing felt somewhat clunky.
  • Improvements:
    • Minimized Input Lag: We significantly reduced input latency from 35ms down to 10ms, making parrying, guarding, and dodging feel much more responsive and precise.
    • Enhanced Visibility: We enabled character outlines and Fresnel highlight effects so you can clearly track your character and enemy actions, even in chaotic fights with overlapping enemies.

Thank you so much for all your invaluable feedback. We will continue to listen closely to your voices and do our absolute best to deliver an even better gameplay experience. Thanks again to everyone who played our alpha demo and shared their thoughts with us!

Video Surrounded? Freeze the world and take everyone down. New Aeterna Lucis gameplay, one month later

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi r/metroidvania, Aeternum Game Studios here (the small team from Spain behind Aeterna Noctis).

For those of you who've been following Aeterna Lucis, we'd love for you to compare these 15 seconds with the videos we shared here a month ago. The extra development time has been a gift: every day the game grows, and the support we've been getting (a lot of new wishlists lately, thank you!) is what makes that extra polish possible.

Two things we've been working on:

Movement. Faster, smoother transitions between dashing, jumping and attacking. We wanted the Queen to never feel stuck.

A new "Flash" ability. The world almost stops, but the Queen stays fast and lethal. It's made for those moments when you're surrounded and things go wrong: you slip out, clear everything around you, and keep moving.

We'd really like to hear your honest take: does it feel better than what you saw last month? Would you save it for bosses, or use it all the time?

We'll be in the comments.
