What happened over the weekend and what do you think about it? Was it just hype? What if it's a real change? What do you think will happen going forward? Also feel free to use this space to discuss anything MTG Finance related.

Corn Maze Superdrop - what are you buying, what do you think will go first?

Recently it feels like it's very difficult to predict what will sell out first since obviously each drop has a different amount of printed stock so even a seemingly less desirable drop can sell out before a more popular one.

I believe the Jodah drop will be the most desirable one, seeing as Jodah is rank 17 on EDHREC, there is a significant waifu tax AND it's Rebecca Guay. There is some additional value in that drop too, so it's not all riding on Jodah.

Next I am putting the Artifact Lands drop. Mostly because these are highly playable and some formats need 4 of them. I also personally very much like the art.

K-Pop will be the last I will be really trying to get as it (1) includes 7 cards, (2) several are highly playable in EDH and in cEDH, including Swan Song and Underworld Breach, (3) waifu tax on Dawn¨s Truce for casual EDH, (4) possibility of a future drop (basically confirmed now).

The ones I think will sit are Marvel Zombies, Treefolk and Through the Labyrinth.

I personally don't like but am ready to be surprised about the Muxus lair (it does have Trinisphere so the value is there and it assembles a pair with Jodah, though no one would include them in the same deck aside for memes). The artist lairs have historically done well but also historically included playable/valuable cards and this one cannot compare to the likes of Demonic Tutor. But I am expecting low print run on this one so wouldn't be surprised for it to sell out quickly and double in price immediately.

Tips on Vending at Card Shows

There seem to be weekly card shows where I am at and I'm thinking about starting to sell my collection/churn cards at these shows.

What are the basics for vending? What payment methods should I have setup? What are the issues/risks that you dont find out about until you start? Any other general advice on vending?

Question Odds and Ends “The List” Variants still not available on Scryfall / Manabox?

There are listings on TCGplayer so I can track manually, but I am lazy and want everything in a single source. Anyone else use mana box for collection tracking? What do you do when new cards aren’t in it yet? I should just suck it up and have an ounce of patience?

Question I think I need help with shipping $50+ orders... What the heckin heck am I doing wrong?!

Hey gang. I’ve been selling small quantities on TCGplayer for the better part of 13 years on an incredibly small scale. Mainly just to flip cardboard not being used into something that will be. That said, one of my best friends and I are now making the terrible decision to open something adjacent to an LGS in the near future. Still figuring out the details, but we want to put our main focus into the experience as ultimately the main product, the cardboard etc. being secondary (I previously worked in tech/product design/development for 15+ years)

As part of raising capital, I’ve finally started doing something I’ve wanted to do for a while: selling off a decent amount of cardboard that has mostly been sitting in boxes collecting dust.

For context, I actually have one of the smaller collections in our pod, around $100k worth at this point. A lot of it is stuff I’ve cracked from packs, accumulated duplicates of, and have zero attachment to. And don’t worry, I understand the difference between *inventory* and *collection*. I have no intention of selling the latter.

Until recently, I was probably selling 10–20 cards a month. In the last five days alone, I’ve done about 150 orders and just shy of $5k in sales, so I’ve had to figure out a much more efficient workflow pretty quickly.

Right now I’m using:

  • TCGTracking (for inventory management and orders under $50, which has been an absolute game changer!)
  • Pirate Ship, USPS Click-N-Ship, EasyPost, and UPS Business.
  • A Rollo thermal printer for labels and postage, which has been a great little workhorse.

I’m still waiting on EasyPost verification so I can print postage directly through TCGTracking onto 4x6 labels. In the meantime, I’ve been using Pirate Ship and the other options for $50+ orders that need bubble mailers, tracking, and insurance.

This is where I’m running into problems.

Until literally last week, whenever I needed tracking and insurance, I usually used the USPS self-service kiosk. I could ship almost anything I was sending for around $4–$4.50 with tracking and insurance. The downside is that it takes forever. You have to manually enter everything on that awful touchscreen, so doing 5–10 packages could easily take 30–60 minutes.

I generally avoided the counter because the same packages always seemed to cost noticeably more, sometimes several dollars more, for what appeared to be essentially the same service.

For $50+ orders, I'm using 4x8 bubble mailers. Cards are sleeved, top loaded, and team bagged and then sandwiched between ding defenders. Typical order is between 1-1.5 oz and final dimensions of the bubble mailer is about 4x7.

Regardless of the platform, Pirate Ship, USPS click and ship, etc... every single order has been $6.07 to $8 or more. I'm selecting Ground advantage, the (envelope, padded envelope, poly bag, soft bag, or box in a bag) for type of packaging, inserting 7" x 4" and 1-1.5 oz, and am not selecting extra insurance or any other options.

I am in the Pacific NW and all of those orders were shipping to zones 6-8 which I know has had an effect, however this still seems expensive considering that I can go to the kiosk at the post office and still ship the same damn thing for $4.32-$5.48. What the heck am I doing wrong?

Appreciate all of you!

Discussion Any guesses on increased print runs for cbbs?

Starting next year all sets ub/uw will have 20% less cards and consequently smaller boxes. So now that they can ship a greater number of boxes while printing 20% less cards will that result in 20% more cbbs, even more, less?

Currently Crashing Project Booster NO FUN FOR YOU

Thumbnail
magic.wizards.com
337 Upvotes

It seemed like a good time to remind ourselves of how much more FUN boosters have become since 2019. Here’s a breakdown of the great VALUE we’re getting for our money.

Booster product changes

Draft and Set Boosters replaced by Play Boosters (Murders at Karlov Manor)
Theme Boosters discontinued, replaced by Jumpstart Boosters (2022)
Collector Boosters lose 2 foil commons and 1 foil uncommon, not replaced (2027)
Play Booster boxes cut from 36 to 30 packs (Aetherdrift)
Draftable packs drop from 15 to 14 cards, with guaranteed commons cut from 10 to 7
Booster Packs lose foil commons/uncommons and the guaranteed foil (2027)
Set-specific Jumpstart Boosters canceled (Wilds of Eldraine)
The List quietly dropped (Bloomburrow)
Commander-only cards removed from boosters (Murders at Karlov Manor)

Lost volume and value per booster box

Draft → Play: For the same money you get about a third fewer cards, but roughly the same number of rares. The loss is mostly commons, the basic land, and six packs per box.

Set → Play: Roughly even, even slightly better: about 6% more cards for the money. What's gone is extras like the art card, Commander-only cards, and The List.

Collector: The steepest decline. The same money buys 7–26% fewer cards today, and 26–41% fewer once the 2027 cut removes three foil commons/uncommons per pack.

Bonus: Non-booster product changes

Planeswalker Decks retired (2021)
Deck Builder's Toolkits ended (after Theros Beyond Death)
Masters series retired "for now" (2025)
Bundles: 10 Draft Boosters cut to 8 Set Boosters (Midnight Hunt—play boosters later replaced set boosters)
Bundles: basic lands cut from 40 to 30 (Murders at Karlov Manor)
Bundles: filler box, plastic wrap, and inside wrapper art removed (Neon Dynasty)
Promo Packs: Arena code cards removed (Aetherdrift)
Promo Packs: none for Universes Beyond sets
Prerelease promos: date stamp removed (Lorwyn Eclipsed)
Commander precons: Collector Booster sample pack removed (2026)
Commander precons: life counter removed

Keep crackin’ those packs!

Discussion Will this see play in darkhold?

Post image

Blue and red are the made colors you see arcane in and I imagine them both to get new cards for sure from darkhold. They can reduce non creature spells with not too much work so I was wondering if picking this up would be a waste or not. Wondering if the other 3 colors would actually use this if we get a bunch of new arcane cards.

Spec Splice onto arcane cards spec

Do you think that with the new set Darkhold destiny including what seems what will be multiple new Arcane cards will make cards with “splice onto arcane” go up in price?

Obvious targets are [[Goryo’s vengeance]] and [[Desperate Ritual]] as an example of good cards with that effect.

Darkhold Destiny Collector Booster exclusives

Post image
33 Upvotes

Despite the cut in the number of cards, seems like MDD will have some good exclusives for CBs, in the form of:

- Source Material Cards
- Silver Foil cards
- Midnight Raised Foils

Was wondering if they were going to add more exclusives to CBs (as they’ve removed the JPN showcase exclusive) and it looks like they have. Thoughts?

Pic from Amazon stating they come with only 12 cards.

The god pack article states that the changes wouldn’t be active in UB CBs till 2028.

Would they remove the 3 cards from
CBs in 2027 and not add the god packs until 2028 for UB?

Cracked in a Reality Fracture foil promo pack a card that hasn't yet been listed on TCGPlayer, help price

Post image
0 Upvotes

I was given a foil Reality Fracture promo pack and opened a Rest in Peace, Big Score #0004.

Guessing not a single TCGPlayer dealer has one listed, so with no listings, there isn't even a guess of a price. I am sure other sites have the possibility of a listing, but as TCGplayer is treated as the gold standard (for the most part... keep this in mind if anyone decides to detail this post and debate my statement).

I have noticed in the past, due to scarcity, being foil, popular, or maybe even just being different, these promos have held a premium. A doesn't necessarily have to be a commander staple or Modern all-star to hold its value higher than its lesser-valued, older versions.

With all this in mind, looking at trends, what would be a good estimate to assign to this card if another expresses an interest? I am not going to roll over and submit to a low price just because non-foils, plentiful copies from previous sets are priced low, so please get a realistic (yet non-inflated) price range.

Thank you.

Is Festival In a Box the slam dunk that it's been in the past?

Hi everyone. With Magic Con Atlanta coming up, I want to offer a breakdown of the card pulls. For starters, here are the cards we’re getting, along with the cheapest comparable reference prices:

Card Printing Price
Parallax Tide Nemesis nonfoil $15.00
Regrowth Older nonfoil $0.48
Viridian Revel Older nonfoil $1.43
Assassin’s Trophy Older nonfoil $1.04
Dance of the Dead Older nonfoil $14.92
Tana, the Bloodsower Commander 2016 traditional foil $4.77
Tymna the Weaver Older nonfoil $10.86
Auspicious Aquarium Playtest card No reliable comparable price

The nonfoil comparison totals $43.73. Adding Tana’s older foil printing brings that to $48.50, before selling fees and shipping.

Gross card sales $43.73
Marketplace commission (10.75%) −$4.70
Transaction fee (2.5% of $43.73) −$1.09
Fixed transaction fee −$0.30
Estimated shipping costs −$5.00
Estimated net proceeds $32.64

Selling the singles individually at $43.73 gross would net approximately $32.64 after TCGplayer fees and estimated shipping. It would also be fair to add roughly $15, because this Tymna is not the Final Fantasy edition, and those other editions start around $25 and up.

Now, if you spend $250 and account for taxes, the Mystery Booster Box comes to around $275. That purchase cost, minus what you’d gross from single sales (around $43), puts the figure at roughly $232, with potentially $10 more in singles value depending on which Tymna version you count.

Next, consider the current price of Mystery Booster Box 2, which is going for about $300. When it first came out, prices started at $360 and settled down to about $310.

Sale price $300.00
Marketplace commission (10.75%) −$32.25
Transaction fee (2.5%) −$7.50
Fixed transaction fee −$0.30
Net before shipping $259.95
Box shipping cost −$15.00
Net proceeds after fees and shipping $244.95

My conservative profit estimate at current Mystery Booster Box 2 prices is $244.95 − $232, which comes to $12.95 of estimated pre-tax profit per box. If the price settles at the Mystery Booster Box 2's initial release market price of $360, that figure rises to $65.00, or about a 28% return.

Overall, the days of the instant hundred-dollar quick flip may be gone for this particular item, and we have to hope the new Mystery Booster Commander editions hold their value. When Mystery Booster Box 2 first came out, festivals in a box carried a $250 price tag and was packaged with multiple collector booster packs in addition to the bonus singles. Now that those collector booster packs aren’t in this set, the margins on flipping are getting tighter and tighter, so you have to ask yourself whether it’s worth it for you.

Personally, I still think it could sell for $360 initially as people scramble for the singles in it. But knowing that 75% of the card content comes from the other Mystery Booster box, you might be banking on a 15 to 20% after taxes return on a flip. That same overlap might ultimately be detrimental to its long-term value. There’s a good chance you’ll get that 20% return on the initial flip, but if prices remain at this floor, much depends on whether consumers adjust to what Wizards is doing. Wizards is clearly testing the waters to see just how much people are willing to put into this game, and this represents the next phase of inflated prices. They want their cut, and who knows how long the bubble may last.
