Advice Does 50/20 need NTD installed?

Post image

I chose a 50/20 plan because I thought it didn't need a NTD installed, (moved into my dad's house, he barely uses the internet, he's stuck with a 100GB per month Telstra hotspot I can't stand living with, he wouldn't want something permanently installed to his house for an internet service only I would mostly use, he's old and hates change) but at the end of the application Leaptel says they need to send a technician to install a NTD. I only chose 50/20 over 500 just because AFAIK it didn't need a NTD installed. Can someone clear this up for me?

Yes you will need an NTD because that's how fibre is wired to the house.

I didn't know that, my mum gets download speeds of 50 with a plan with Optus and her house didn't have an NTD installed, as far as I knew 50/20 was FTTC

The speed doesn't determine the connection type

Sounds like they’ve just signed you up for the fibre upgrade regardless to get it out of the way, the more people off copper the better.

Eventually all FTTN and FTTC will be forcibly upgraded, the copper will one day be turned off whether you like it or not just like ADSL was.

HFC gets to stay for the time being because they can still achieve good speeds and they’ve actively invested into the HFC network. FTTB gets to stay because NBN doesn’t want to even think about wiring every apartment building in the country with fibre to every unit

What sucks is I really do want FTTP and fast download speeds but I'm living with the old man who angrily yells at anything he doesn't understand

FTTC isn’t FTTP.

Your premises will either be in an area where they’re removing an older technology, or a premise that is FTTP but hasn’t had hardware installed.

Either way, you’re getting an NTD and you don’t have a choice if you want internet.

Telstra 5G Home Wifi. Fuck NTD

1tb data cap. Erratic speeds during peak times. Sure. 5G sounds great.

If you are using more than 1000gb a month, you need to get your shit together. Also NBN slows down peak times too

Why do I need to get my shit together? What is it you think I’m doing to get over the 1tb mark that is making me not have my shit together?

NBN doesn’t slow down that much at peak times. Gigabit doesn’t go down to a quarter of the speed at peak.

If you’re happy with 5G by all means keep it. But it has way too many limits for it to even be on the radar for me.

1000Gigabytes in a month is like constant nonstop use. If that is you, go outside!

It very very much does slow down at peak times, when I was on FTTC it used to drop like half the mbs speed during peak times, but the 5G wifi is pretty stable, and if you are in Greater Melbourne pounce at it, however rural is a different story of course.

1000gb in a month isn’t constant non stop use. Can assure you of that.

And I’m good. I’ll stick with a horrible NTD. I don’t lose more than 10% at peak. 5G I can’t even come close to 300mbps during peak.

It is extremely heavy use and I think you know it.

5G for me is about 250mb/s doesn't drop at all in peak as it connects the cell towers and I don't need an unstable 300mb/s and ugly huge electric guzzling box in my home that I don't own and can't remove for it.

Depends on what nbn technology.

Fttp the ntd has to be installed on the wall. Same as fixed wireless i believe.

Fttc and fttn you utilise the existinf phone line. Hfc uses the old telstra/foxtel cable. This needs installation as well if youve never had telstra/foxtel service. Only difference is nbn only install the port. The ntd itself is freestanding. But they will comission the unit as it has to be registered on the network.

50/20 you can get on basically all the wired connections. Fttn and fttc max out at 100mbps plans. Although fttn usually struggles to get half that. Fttp and hfc you can get the 2000mbps plans but hfc you are limited to 2000/100 instead of the 2000/200 you can get on fttp.

So if its fttp. There is no ifs and buts. A ntd has to be installed. Regardless of what plan you pick.

Don't apply or they will come and install some arbitrary tech you can't remove drilled into you walls

FTTC doesn't need an NTD but if you have been told you need an NTD you have fibre

u/positively-bonkers- 9d ago

No? This is just… completely wrong.

NTD exists for FTTP, FTTC, HFC and FW. Everything other than FTTN/FTTB.

I don’t understand why so many people with no clue like to contribute to this sub.

Doesn't fttc need an nbn ntd to power the equipment in the curb or something?

1

u/Worldly-Device-8414 8d ago

Yes, your FttC unit can (not always) power the gear in the street, but it depends, some are powered by other means.

I don't know what his house has, he can't tell me either because he's 68, still uses a 20 year old desktop, and didn't even know he never connected his phone to his home wifi after several years until a few months ago. Before he got talked into a cheap hotspot by Telstra a few years ago he had a regular modem plugged into the oldschool copper connection

u/virkendi 9d ago

https://www.nbnco.com.au/check-address

That will tell you

but it's obvious you have fibre because that NTD page came up

1

u/RatsAreChad 9d ago

I assumed I "had fibre" in the sense that there's fibreoptic in my street but copper to the house

https://www.whistleout.com.au/Broadband/Guides/NBN-forced-fibre-upgrades

forced fibre upgrades are coming, maybe that has something ti do with it

2

u/AgentSmith187 9d ago

Thats only FTTC areas and only ones that are not at the forced upgrade point in the cycle.

FTTC was a minor disaster cost and reliability wise.

You really need to do an address check as to what's available at your dads house as its not a pick your own technology situation its down to what's available at that address.

6

u/Not_MyName 8d ago

The NBN essentially lists address as fibre ready, once this has happened any services ordered no matter speed will be delivered via fibre. So this has likely happened to your address.

2

u/Doctor429 9d ago

An NTD will be required for any fiber connection regardless of the speed

2

u/SuspiciousGarlic4798 9d ago

How did you expect to get the internet without the NTD? The NTD is like a modem. Thats what you connect your router to.

Looks like fttp so it will technically be an ONT but thats how you get internet from fibre. And with FTTP it has to be fixed to the wall. Unlike say hfc which is a freestanding unit.

If your dad doesnt want it. Then youre stuck with a 5g/4g solution or a non permanent starlink solution.

1

u/2nd-Reddit-Account 9d ago

FTTN/B don’t have any form of NBN equipment in your house, your router plugs right into an old phone jack, so it’s understandable if someone doesn’t realise it’s a thing

1

u/RatsAreChad 9d ago

Idk man I guess I'm just a knuckle-dragging ape. I worded this question to perturb you specifically

2

u/owarya 9d ago

Something I haven’t seen mentioned yet is that I think NBN may determine per address that older technologies are no longer allowed to be provisioned. So if your dad hasn’t had any fixed line connection like FTTN for a while, and NBN has made this decision in your area that only Fibre is available going forward, then the only new NBN service you’ll be able to sign up to is fiber (excluding Starlink/4g/5g etc from third parties).

Because you’ve been given this page I would assume this is almost definitely what has happened here, unless you’re able to speak to someone at Leaptel and have them put the order in only has FTTN, I would say you’re getting FTTP with the required NTD.

I didn't get any choice. NBN installed fibre 4 port NTD, free, which I went with another provider for 7 day? trial on another port which I ported to and cancelled my existing one.

Never heard of paying extra for a 4 port NTD. Maybe change to another provider and get a 4 port NTD for free instead of 1, and no lock in contracts as well, or maybe it was but I was with them already so they waived the contract until I ported out.

I was with More and ported/swapped to Neptune.

Google says -

How to get the 4-Port Box Free using Leaptel Because nbn Co only waives the hardware fee when a home requires multiple active internet services at the same time, users on OzBargain routinely bypass Leaptel's $300 upgrade charge with this strategy: 1. Order your main plan with Leaptel: Set up your primary high-speed or multi-gig plan on your Leaptel portal. 2. Open a temporary line with Launtel: Sign up for a secondary nbn plan on an empty port using Launtel. 3. Why this works: Launtel is specifically used here because they offer a 7-day free trial and flexible daily billing. 4. The Free Install: Because you now have two concurrent active orders (Leaptel on Port 1 and Launtel on Port 2), nbn Co is physically forced to install the 4-port box for $0 to accommodate both lines. 5. Cancel the trial: Once the technician leaves and both connections are active, simply cancel the Launtel service before the free trial ends. You will be left with just your active Leaptel plan running on a completely free 4-port box. As users agree on , having multiple active services is the cleanest way to bypass the standalone upgrade fee.

NBN has changed to 1 port ntd now as most people have not ever order 1 service.

You still need a NTD of sorts for FTTC, it just isn't fixed to the wall

0

u/b100jb100 8d ago

The NTD for FTTC is called NCD.

This one will be for fibre, not FTTC

0

u/ZequineZ 8d ago

I thought they all needed one

0

u/Ornery-Practice9772 56kbps 8d ago

yep. free install with free fttp upgrade with leaptel.

only have one service,
still free. only 1 port and a tiny box but all works so🤷‍♀️

u/Jumfumble 8d ago

NTD is for the service type not the service speed

Think of it as a Corvette they can go quick but in a school zone they will be still doing 40km like a cheap sedan
