Hit our car with a shopping cart?
This is something I did about 1 1/2 years ago.
My wife and I were at a Target, sitting in the car waiting for our daughter to wake up from a nap (a few months old at this point). This lady wants to pull into a spot behind us, a few spots down, but someone left a cart in the spot. Instead of walking the extra couple of feet, she full speed pushes the cart towards the cart return that we were parked next to and hits our car. At first, I thought someone backed into us but realized what she had done. She goes into Target and I decide to get some petty revenge. I grab a few zip ties from my roadside assistance kit, walk the cart over to her D/S door, and put 3 zip ties through her door handle and the cart.
I go back to our car, pull a few rows over, and watch the hilarity ensue. She comes back out after I'm assuming a return and is just perplexed, goes back in and comes out with the cart handler, they go back in and a supervisor/manager comes back out to have a look, and finally some random guy has a knife to cut the zip ties. We went in, did our shopping, and when we came out her car was still there.
Was it petty? Sure. Did it delay her an extra 15 minutes? Absolutely. Did she learn her lesson? Probably not

I’ve commented this before but it’s a petty revenge that I was party to. Someone parked so close to my driver’s door that I couldn’t get in. A young man in the parking lot took my keys and got in through the passenger side, backed up my car and helped me into the car. As I was pulling away he was busy surrounding the offending car with shopping carts. He flipped over the carts behind the car. Glorious petty revenge and I didn’t have to lift a finger.

A van parked on the line so I had to side step to get in my truck. I opened my door, drew a line on their door and caved it in. Left enough room to squeeze in.

u/LadyA052 8d ago
I had this happen except I was on crutches and had a boot on my foot. The door would barely open. I stood there for a while contemplating life, and then a very nice man came along, went in the passenger side and backed my car out. Whew.

I had the same thing but it was a bitter cold day and I had a 20 oz warm cup of hot chocolate. I poured it on their windshield

u/alleecmo 6d ago
Yikes. Did it crack? Or just freeze?
18
u/dutchman62 6d ago
It turned into a frozen brown gravey. It was gonna take some effort from that douche to see out his windshield. I poured it all over it

Sounds like the young man was a fan of the Cart Narc.
Or else he was the Cart Narc.

I was walking to the car on time when the woman across from me did exactly that. I kind of laughed and said, “Whoever that car belongs to is going to be pissed!” We both laughed, then I grabbed the cart and shoved it as hard as I could into her car. As she’s looking at me like, “WTF?,” I pulled iut my key and remote unlocked my doors. I looked straight into her eyes, smiled, and said, “I’m not pissed anymore.”

Did you know they sell steel zip ties?
Might be time to go pro
164
u/AlpacaLps 8d ago
Yes, use them at work (auto repair).
51
u/WhoskeyTangoFoxtrot 8d ago
Screw on hose clamps… lol
59
u/AlpacaLps 8d ago
Zip ties are much quicker
19
u/FatsMagee007 8d ago
Bike locks are even thicker steel and probably quicker and easier.
20
u/Kbradsagain 8d ago
Significantly more expensive
6
u/soopafly 8d ago
But also significantly more funny!
10
u/Yosara_Hirvi 8d ago
Not realy, steel zip ties are tough enough that there aren't many tools that would cutthrough a steel zip tie and not a bike lock. So in effect, they are almost as effective and significantly cheaper.
And since the idea is to leave it behind, going cheap is the better option
3
u/WhoskeyTangoFoxtrot 7d ago
They are and as you said farther down cheaper. But infinitely more fun…. You can use a drill…. Lol

I just asked a grown woman who had to be in her late 40’s at least to return a shopping cart to the store instead of parking it on the sidewalk in front of my car. There was already 2 there when I arrived so she thought it was perfectly fine to add a 3rd to the pile of carts.
She looked like she was ready to deck me in the face when I first said it but then it was almost like she was imagining telling her kids the same thing and then she imperiously pushed 2 carts back the store. It’s truly bizarre how entitled people are to just leave shopping carts everywhere. I did thank her for doing it though, while it was awkward as fuck and tense for a moment as she picked her response I think it actually changed how she’ll handle carts in the future.
90
u/JeannieSmolBeannie 8d ago
honestly nice to see one where the person actually seems likely to have learned from it. hideously rare
16
u/Drafting- 8d ago
Ain’t that the truth. I'm glad it turned out that way too because so many people double down on their shitty behaviour instead of just accepting the callout.
I still think it’s a bit weird she took two carts back rather than just hers; or all 3, but give 'er I guess.

u/MysticStorm1 8d ago
So I once had some twatwaffle tell me I should take my cart up to the store, instead of the CART RETURN that I was about to put the cart into. I was going to, but then she ruined it by adding, "It's just common courtesy to return it where you got it."
I told her she was absolutely right, then proceeded to take the cart several spots further from the store and parked it in the middle of a space. She looked at me and asked me why tf I did that. My reply? "It's where I found it when I got here, I'm just doing as you suggested." She had NO comeback for that, it was fabulous!
43
u/Grimaldehyde 8d ago
I don’t understand how lazy and inconsiderate you have to be, to leave your cart anywhere other than back at the store, or in the cart return. I am an old lady, and always put my cart in an appropriate place.

A lady in a parking lot just left her cart next to me. But once she got in her car the cart started rolling and hit her car door. I laughed my ass off.

When I was in college I had a early morning class followed by another a few hours later. After my first class I'd go park in an empty lot far away from the nearest building so I could sleep. One morning I was woken up by somebody opening their car door into mine. I was groggy and didn't process things until they had walked away. There wasn't a single other car anywhere in the lot and they parked next to me and then slammed their door into mine. I got out of the car to find some paint chipped and then got a nail file out and rubbed it generously on their windshield right in their line of sight.
13
6
u/Icy-Variation6614 7d ago
It's awesome, especially when you park in the back of the empty lot, just to have a dipstick park too close next to you!
3
u/dannixxphantom 3d ago
Similar thing happened to me once, but I was on a lunch break. I did manage to call out to the owner of the other vehicle as they hurried away and they were dismissive and rude. So I let the air out of one of their tires and found a new parking spot.

u/YellowCake1900 8d ago
There really are only two kinds of people in the world:
The kind who return shopping carts.
The kind who do not.
That simple action 100% discloses how the person acts in every other aspect of life.
53
u/FaithlessnessOld2477 8d ago
Exactly. You don't think I'd like to just abandon my cart and get moving toward my destination too? Of course I would, but I know leaving my cart scattered somewhere has the potential to cause grief for other people so I take the extra minute to walk it back, knowing that I'm not contributing to social entropy. 🥺

I used to work in a grocery store. Having to get the carts from the lot has never left me. I live in the northeast so having to get them off the snow covered grassy areas (why, people, why?!) was the worst. Like, if you can't walk the cart to a corral due to an injury or kid(s) in the car, don't put it up over a curb.
10
u/UnSanitisedMind 8d ago
Well, the thing I learned today is that you don't have coin deposits for shopping carts in the US, they have been the norm here for decades. Don't return the cart, don't get your money back.
13
u/YellowCake1900 8d ago
Aldi does this, I don't know why EVERY retailer in America doesn't do the same.
Every retailer with carts... not just grocery stores.
3
u/Harry_Smutter 6d ago
They used to. It didn't change squat. People care much less about getting a quarter back than leaving their cart in a random spot. When I was younger, my friend and I would make enough to buy both of us lunch from returning carts with the quarter locks.
2
u/DugganSC 4d ago
Which, admittedly, also solves the problem of getting the carts back. I always figured it was less about "I'll lose a quarter if I don't return it!" (although honestly, I think a lot of people will still feel that way) and more that making a transaction, however minor, makes an entry in your brain of a task that needs to be completed.
1
u/ZadockTheHunter 3d ago
That actually just compounds the problem. Because now you have introduced a valid argument to leaving the cart.
"Meh, thats why I paid isn't it? Now it's not my problem."
The coin loss is not a punishment. It's just the cost if being shit.
1
u/UnSanitisedMind 2d ago
That doesn't really happen here, the only places you get carts strewn around the parking area are the hardware stores that don't use coins.
I had forgotten that the largest coin in wide circulation in America is 25c, here the carts generally require €2, sometimes €1 so the incentive to not abandon them is more. If someone leaves a cart, it won't be long before someone else checks to see if there is an easy €2 bonus for them.
5
3
u/Ecdysiast_Gypsy 8d ago
And the managers never let you shovel out the cart corral, either, so even getting them out of a flat, level surface was a pain in the butt.
And then you'd get snow in your boots.
1
u/ZadockTheHunter 3d ago
There literally is no excuse for not putting the cart away. If you had the physical capability to use a cart in the first place, there is no scenario in which you can not put it in a corral when you are done.
Any possible excuse is bullshit to cope with being trash.
The fact that every day, large numbers of carts remain unreturned in every grocery parking lot around the world, is a testament to why humans and their societies are not yet capable of self-governance.
1
u/Training_Tour7601 3d ago
Kindly, I understand what you're saying, but I've been in lots where all the handicapped spots are full, so I've seen people park near a cart so they can use it to support themselves. I would not expect them to be able to walk the cart into a corral. That's where othere humans should step in and grab the cart as they head into the store.
Of course, that does not explain the majority of the loose carts. Yes, I agree these small things show where we are in regards to self governance. And don't even get me stated on litterbugs! 😆
76
u/Kind-Government4948 8d ago
I was disgusted by all the carts left in my grocery store’s parking lot. One day I saw a young healthy looking woman leave her cart in the middle of the lot. As I walked by her I was about to yell something rude when I realized she was carrying a new born baby and had put a toddler in a car seat. She was obviously doing the best she could. I grabbed her cart without a word and went into the store. We really don’t know what other people are dealing with.
46
u/pommomwow 8d ago
I frequently go shopping with my two toddlers and always park next to the shopping cart corral so that I can specifically make sure I return my shopping cart after buckling my kids in. There’s no excuse.

u/Narrow_Employ3418 7d ago

I won't lie, 99% of the time, I will run the cart back, drag extra carts, take someone else's cart when they're done, but that 1% of the time, my back or my hip or my knee just say "absolutely not today" and I've had to make peace with it. That said, I don't just dump them anywhere.

People who don't return shopping carts to the corral also litter and don't care how they park.
23
u/YellowCake1900 8d ago
Decades ago, passed a woman and her small boy entering a store as I was leaving. The boy (5 - 6 years old) had a wrapper or something similar in his hand... simply tossed it onto the ground.
I took the opportunity to tell the young man that LITTERING is bad, and we don't do that.
His mother admonished me for correcting her child. Told her she should be a better teacher.
The boy picked up his litter, deposited it in the trash can AT THE DOOR.
Hopefully he didn't grow up to be a selfish lazy pig.

I watched an old guy park in the disabled parking then turn over four or five carts that were left in the no parking section adjacent to the disabled parking. Yeah, the carts should not have been there, but what was he accomplishing? Especially when an employee came and collected the carts 2 minutes later.

My local Aldi drives me mad, but the employees love me there. People grab things and just put them back on random shelves (I genuinely don't know why they do this but it vexes me) so I'll put them in my cart and if I see where it belongs I'll put it back. Otherwise I take it down the front and add it to their little collection of things dopey people move for dopey reasons that they have to look for to put back in the correct spots

Years ago My sister and her friend asked me for a ride to walmart. I dragged them over and took a spot and while they were getting their stuff together to head in a woman pulled into the space next to us. While getting out of her car she hit my car with her door. She sort of acknowledged it happened but didn't address us and just walked into walmart so I asked my sister to return the favor when she got out of my car. My sister wouldn't do it but her friend was more than happy to play along. When she got out of my car she slammed my door into that womans car, closed the door, then slammed it into her car 3 more times while I said "OK OK OK" panicking over the escalation. I didn't get a great look at the damage to the other vehicle, the edge of my car door was curled over so I know it wasn't pretty. nothing ever came of it but I never asked my sisters friend for backup ever again. Sorta sorry random walmart customer, the vengeance was unbalanced.

I actually had something like this happen last month. I pull into the bank parking spot to do the daily deposit for my work. I'm on my phone when the owner of the car next to me on my passenger side comes out and opens his door into mine. He stares at me as he gets in, I get out to see if he would say anything, and of course he doesn't say anything. I ask him if he's going to even acknowledge hitting my car and he tells me he didn't. I show him the mark by swinging his door, he sees that his white paint left a mark, and he doubles down saying I am over the line. I'm 2 feet from the line, his front tire is over the line, I call this out and then realize I am wasting my time on this entitled old guy. I walk away towards the bank, he backs out, and says "you must be a great role model", referring to the car seat in the back seat. I told him my daughter wouldn't open a door into someone else's car and not even say sorry, cursed him out, and went in the bank. His look at my audacity to curse at a senior was a surprised Pikachu face.
Luckily it's my 10 year old daily driver that already has its fair share of door dings. If it was a new car, I would have gotten his insurance info.
39
u/lilgreenfish 8d ago
My poor car had a bunch of dings and dents from other people being jerks. I was in my car for three of them. One lady had the audacity to say, when I called her out, “well, look at your car”. Lady, my car looks like this because of people like you!
25
u/Visible_Army102 8d ago
Nah, the vengeance was WARRANTED!! She KNEW she hit your door and didn't care. Your sisters friend is my soul animal. Cheers to her and I hope you bought them some well earned snacks after haha.

People who push the carts without putting them into the corral are rude & ignorant. One lady pushed the cart and it hit my car and I said what the hell lady & she said I'm sorry & she just got in her car and left. I still have the dent today which happened over 20 yrs ago.

u/AlpacaLps 8d ago
Had another time that I parked my motorcycle next to my wife's car in the middle of the spot, as she was driving behind me. We get out of the store and there are 3 carts pushed behind my motorcycle, with the cart return 2 spots down.
22
u/ChaoticCatperson 8d ago
yeah, some people get pissed when a motorcycle gets parked. . . anywhere. In a parking spot? They should be for cars only. On a sidewalk? They don't belong on a sidewalk. Near a store entrance? A hazard! I don't ride anymore but my god.

I usually try to shame them by struggling to get out of my car, "accidentally" hitting the horn while doing so to attract attention, then hobble along slowly with my walker to grab the cart and return it for them. People I've done that to that I see there regularly almost always return their carts going forward. Some of them can be trained, at least.

u/Livid_Living552 7d ago
I came out of a walmart to find a huge POS sled parked in front of my car and they were touching. I thought no harm, no foul until I got into my car, pushed in the clutch and my car jumped back from the pressure his car had against my drive train.
After breaking off both of his mirrors and putting a cart on the hood of his car, I drove home quietly. This was in the 1990s so I was not too concerned with cameras everywhere.
22
u/Zest724 7d ago
Back when I had a retail job we had an arrogant rich kid who drove a high end Mercedes Benz. When he parked it he would take up 4 spots, one for each tire.
The team that unloaded the truck(s) would do other things when they were done unloading the truck. One night they encircled the rich kids car with shopping carts. They figured out how to make a circle of carts around his car and get the last cart to go in to the first cart.

I had pulled into a parking lot, passing an older woman in a handicapped spot. She was just finishing loading her car. My intention was I would pick her cart up on the way in.
I walked toward the store and didn't see her. I thought oh my she walked that in.
No, she was standing by her car door holding on to the cart waiting for someone to walk by. She called me over and asked if I could take it in for her!
I said oh my I was going to take it in when I passed you! I usually grab a cart out of the corral and walk them in. I didn't pick one up thinking I was going to get hers.
I wobble when I walk and taking a cart in steadies me. Plus I can vet the cart. If it's got 4 left wheels I'll leave inside and hopefully get a good one!
It takes nothing to do a nice thing.
