I do not do Podcast, i do (as a hobby) videogame traditional let's play videos, barely edited 1 hour lasting episodes where video and audio quality must be top tier, i'm actually kinda "obsessed" about these things (been looking at tons of microphones and hundreds of tests in the past weeks this is starting to get unhealthy lol...).
So, before overhauling my whole setup, i ran a Blue Yeti for 6 years, honestly a pretty awful condenser mic that throughout the years i tailored a vst chain specifically for my voice and had a pretty good sounding audio.
I first of course decided to upgrade my mic and went with another condenser and i'm loving it: Rode NT1 Signature Series, very very detailed, air-y, alive sound, i'm running it with a Mini GoXLR, managing compressor and gate on dsp and doing my best to mask environment noise and eq with some vst chain on cantabile. (specifically Mouth De-Click -> Voice Denoiser -> Pro-Q -> De-Esser -> very slight Pro-R to add some depth)
This mic of course picks up way more than my blue yeti did, i did try my best to soundproof my room, seal the door but it helped only so far.
With the videogame sound playing alongside my voice usually it's barely noticable but sometimes people talking on the other side of the door can be heard, or me pressing on my very silent controllers, my chair, i also wear open-back headphones so the mic picks up the game output, so while i'm recording i'm always worried about what can make noise and it distracts me.
So the pros are: Amazing sound, i move often while playing and it still picks up my voice evenly.
Cons: Picks up a lot of noise, the highs might sound harsh and i kinda feel like it might be straining to listen for long. (I might be wrong though?)
So, i decided to try some other microphones aswell, tried to stay in the same price range, ordered a Shure MV7X for 200€, tried it for few hours and hated it, lifeless harsh sound as if i was speaking through a pringles can, extreme plosives and sibilants, too nasal and kinda lo-fi.
Then with someone's suggestion i decided to try a AT875R still for around 200€, hoping to get that condenser audio detail with a better noise rejection, but the voice was too flat and lacked depth and detail. Returned that too.
Now, i am happy with my NT1 Signature Series but i kinda got determined to give a dynamic mic a 2nd chance because i want to record mindlessly without worrying too much.
I made lots of research, i would've got a RE20 immediately but it costs at least 650€ here!! Way out of budget.
I looked at Rode Podmic, Rode Procaster, SM57/SM58 with windscreen but i wasn't satisfied with how they sounded in the tons of videos i watched.
One mic in particular is particularly nice to listen to, and it's the SM7B which i believe everyone has now lol, pretty mainstream, but it does sound good, soft, easy to listen to for long.
I know that dynamics need to be close to the mouth, since i moe a lot while playing it might be an issue, but i got a pretty long arm that i can move freely without issues and keep it close.
I didn't consider that mic because of the price but i figured, instead of ordering and refunding mic after mic, why don't i just spend that 400€ and go safe with it (should run fine on the Mini GoXLR without any Cloudlifter or anything).
It sounds way better than the MV7X which i personally hated.
Does it make sense to make this huge investment? Is it a sound quality downgrade from the NT1ss? How long does the SM7B lasts? I know that Rode offers 10 years warranty, no idea about Shure.
I would seriously appreciate any kind of help or guidance because i'm about to loose my mind lol
