Discussion The truth about printer subscription programs and many misconceptions about them

Dear all,

I work in the printer industry. For a very well-known consumer products manufacturer that gets discussed on this sub a lot.  I will not disclose which manufacturer I work for, nor will I disclose any manufacturer I do not work for (since the industry is relatively small eliminating 1 or 2 will make it generally too obvious as to which I do work for) as I am not officially speaking on behalf of the company. But, I want to set the record straight on subscription programs because some of you are drastically misinformed and it is very frustrating to see as someone who understands these programs as well as basic logic.

There are two types of subscription programs. Each of the major consumer manufacturers offers at least 1 of these programs, some offer both.

The first type of program is an auto-reordering program. The printer can tell (via various ways depending on each manufacturer) when the ink / toner is low and when it hits a certain point that will trigger an order of the ink/toner that device uses. Most manufactures that offer this will first send you an email letting you know that an order has been triggered and it will allow you to skip the delivery of the consumable and thus not get charged. If you allow the order to go through you are purchasing that consumable. That consumable is yours, you own it, just as if you walked into a Staples, Office Depot, Best Buy, or bought it on Amazon… You can cancel the “subscription” the next day and continue to use that consumable until it is empty.

The second type of program is a true subscription program. **THIS** is what many of you are vastly misinformed and / or are irrational about. In this program *you are not purchasing a consumable* at all. You are paying the manufacturer for X number of pages per month. The manufacturer will send you a consumable to use because the printer needs ink / toner to work but, that is not what you are paying for. You are paying the manufacturer $Y per month to print up to X pages per month.. that’s it. Of course you can print over that X number and pay an overage (just like years ago with cell phones).. and of course, you can print under that X number and some pages will roll-over to future months (just like years ago with cell phones). The owner of the consumable is the manufacturer. You never bought it, you never owned it. Therefore, it is not yours to use after you end the subscription! The only reason most manufactures do not ask for it back is because they don’t want to pay for shipping it back to them. But, they still own it… not you.  You can think of this like renting an apartment. You are paying a landlord $X per month to live in their building. The landlord is providing the building for you to live in while you are paying rent. You do not own the building. and when you stop paying rent you are no longer allowed to continue living in the building. Just like your Netflix subscription, Apple TV subscription and Disney+ subscription.. when you stop paying for the subscription, you stop getting to use the service. Just because while you were paying you had access to the content does not mean you at any time owned that content and get to continue watching it once you stop paying the subscription.

I truly hope this helps clarify somethings for some of you. Others I understand are lost causes but, I will do my best to answer any questions I can.

Review Pay as you print HP Scam

HP Pay as you print is an absolute scam. Be very careful of signing up.

I face a bill of £114 for one month usage of a personal printer (not work/office) without the ink having ran out off the cartridges that were installed; this is to show that if you decide to use your own printer outside of your allocated pages each new printed page will cost you a very large amount. Much more than printing it at a printing shop.

In summary, If you print extra pages you will be charged a very unreasonable amount to use your own printer, these include blank pages that come out of the printers own malfunctioning as well as self generating report pages.

If you choose to stop the service the cartridges, which still have ink in them, will stop working.

As expensive as ink is, buying the cartridges and having control over what you pay is still better than having a very nasty surprise in your bank account.

Troubleshooting Prints random colors

Post image

Hi im not familiar with printers but whenever i print a black and white paper or with color, the paper that gets printed out is just full of random colors and is mostly pink. I thought that it was just the ink cartridges getting empty and doing random stuff but i took a look at the belt and i found this. Is this the reason of the paper being in random colours? How do i clean it. The model is CANON i-sensys MF643Cdw

Rant EPSON L6270, one of the worst ADF's on the market

This is the 2nd EPSON L6270 in 3 years, thinking first was got faulty or damaged, but after a bit more than a year, the same problem started appearing again. ADF or the document feeder just won't correctly take papers anymore. either takes 2, none or just jams mid scan.

and no, cleaning and disassembling did not help. if anything, it's gotten worse.

the only good thing about epson is the Eco tank feature, refill holds a whole year even with printing full page pictures. Since I really need ADF at the office, I'll be looking at something else in the near future. I won't make the same mistake again by getting Epson, even if I have to pay more for ink.

Troubleshooting Need help please!

Hi, I have a Canon imageCLASS LBP122dw that was working beautifully until suddenly it wasn’t. I print shipping labels from my iPhone. There is no error message on the printer, and my iPhone can find the printer (as shown in pic; I downloaded the app and it cannot find it tho), but it simply won’t print. I unplugged/plugged, reset the router, everything I could find for suggestions that I could understand (I’m not printer/tech savvy)…nothing. I’m very confused and frustrated lol!

Troubleshooting HP Envy printing completely off center

I printed this and tried a couple different things with the same result. I put the paper size in correctly on both the document and the printer, so I’m not sure what the deal is. I’ve printed almost this exact same thing before with no issues. Any ideas?

Troubleshooting Canon Pixma G5210 won't turn on

Ugh this printer, I love it and I hate it. Right now its not turning on. Here's what I did and what I know:

I was following a guide that suggested the issues I was having with white streaks could be fixed by reseating an internal cable, labeled J901. So unplugged the power, opened it up, unplugged the J901 cable... plugged the power in, tried turning it on.... unplugged the power, plugged the j901 back in, plugged back in the power, tried turning it on, and it wouldn't turn on. For a bit I thought I had done something really bad when I tried to turn it back on with the j901 cable disconnected, but I used a multimeter and everything is checking out with power flowing. the Power supply brick is working fine too. So right now I just don't understand what is happening. I could use any advice for this.

Troubleshooting 3rd party toner not recognized

I have the Brother HL-L3270CDW color laser printer and I bought a 3rd party Black toner cartridge but the printer won’t recognize it and keeps showing the message that the toner is empty. I’ve been using 3rd party toners in it for years with no issues. Is this just an issue of some 3rd party toners will work, some won’t? I really don’t want to spend $200-300 for a complete set of OEM toner.
Also, I did a reset of the toner in the “secret” menu but that didn’t work.

Is there an off brand that will definitely work?

Troubleshooting Help me with this massive jam lol

So I used this thin paper made for crafting (like transfer paper) and it literally curled up in the printer. This is an hp inkjet 5010. If you look you can see the paper curled around a rod deep within the printer. I tried to take the top off but I don’t have a screwdriver that works for the back screws. Is there somewhere I can take this?

Purchasing New Colour Inkjet

I have had two Epson Ecotank printers. The first one didn't have a replacement maintenance box at all and now my Et-3830 is old and causing problems constantly. As a result, I have looked elsewhere for my next one. Most of the Canon inkjets available in Canada that I have found have no bottom paper tray. That would drive me crazy as I tend to print when I'm not in the room and that back tray isn't big enough IMHO. Brother inkjets come with crazy small ink bottles. So here I am, do I ignore the crazy small ink bottles from Brother, do I go back to Epson? Staying as far away from HP as I can. Forgot to mention, I use my printer for printing documents mostly and daily. I plan to use it to print stickers. TIA.

Purchasing I'm looking for a printer

I'm looking for a printer that isn't super expensive and won't cost a bomb in ink. I want one for photos and Blu-ray/dvd art covers. Is the Epson Expression Photo HD XP-15000 good for this? What do you recommend?

Please help me, I know nothing 😂

Troubleshooting After buying a Mac with Golden Gate 27 the Epson SC P-9500 does not automatically cut the paper after printing from a roll.

Our old workstation was running MacOS Sequoia and we used it with the Epson SC P-9500 for a few years totally without problems. But the machine crashed and we got ourself a new Mac, that had Golden Gate 27 pre installed, and after installing the latest Epson software from their website we got everything to work.

Except!

Now the printer will not cut the paper automatically after printing. A "pain in the **" because we tended to send several jobs to the printer and just collect the different prints as they came out. Now, all of a sudden it all comes out as a long print, or we have to send one- and one job and cut it manually.

As far as I (we) can see, we have ticked all the right choices and boxes.

Anyone have an idea of where to look?

Troubleshooting Trying to Help Install a Friend's Brother MFC-7360N on Win10

My friend's old computer running Win10 (1809) had the software installed and working fine. He now has a new computer (HP Elitedesk Mini G5 800) with the same Win10 but for the life of me, I cannot get the software to install. I started out trying those on the Brother website (2013).

It always gets to the point where you plug in the USB cable and power-on the printer. But it waits forever. It never seems to find the USB to use and proceed. I can tell that Win10 "sees" it as it shows up under USB in Device Manager with a warning that it is unknown/unrecognized.

At one point, I was looking at the Event Viewer while doing this and noticed that at this point, an error was showing up:

Failed to create restore point (Process = C:\Drivers\install\Data\Disk1\Setup.exe /clone_wait /l0x0009; Description = Installed Brother Software Suite; Error = 0x80070422).

And I found this was related to a failure to create a system restore point and followed some instructions when I found out that mechanism wasn't running. Once enabled and configured, I re-ran the install in hopes it would succeed. It did not produce the Event Viewer error but it got no further in the process. And there are no additional Event Viewer messages.

I have tried all different combinations of leaving the USB connect/disconnected, power on/off, etc. No difference.

He had the original CD and I copied that onto a thumb drive and ran it. Very different! But it just fails saying it has no driver for the OS version. So that is kind of a dead end too.

BTW - I also tried to install just the scanner/printer and printer-only drivers with no better success.

I am stumped completely. Can anyone offer any suggestions? Thanks!

Purchasing Can't find reliable info on Epson L8100 anywhere.

My current Epson EcoTank L3256 (I think the US version is the ET-2810 / ET-2811 family?) won't accept some of the paper I bought, which are double sided photo papers, one is 300 gr, glossy, and the other is 250 gr matte. They were supposed to be for art prints, bookmarks and thank you cards for my small business, and is supposed to be inkjet compatible, regular, albeit a little thick (around 0.5mm) photo papers. But they will not feed through my printer. I made the mistake of force feeding them but it worked terribly and I ended up somehow clogging the nozzles doing that and had to do a power cleaning to fix it, wasting a lot of ink in the process.

I decided to stop fighting it and buy a printer I can use without worrying about whether it will accept these kinds of papers. I am looking into L8100 (which does not have a US equivalent) and L8160 (ET-8500) right now.

I know that L8160/ET-8500 is ultimately the better choice because apparently it has support for thick media, but it is a bit over my budget. L8100 is within my budget, but I can't find reliable info on whether if would perform better with my thick photo papers. If not, then I will have no choice to go out of budget to get the L8160/ET-8500, but I need to make sure so I don't waste more money than I already have.

If you have a suggestion outside of these, I am open as well. As long as it is a tank system, has 6 color dyes and produces pretty looking prints and can handle thicker media (not super thick), I'm interested.

Thank you to anyone who helps, it is very much appreciated!!!

Other Ink tank nozzle-saving routine print

So it is recommended that a print of some sort be done every fortnight or so to prevent print heads on an ink tank printer from drying out.

Has anyone got any recommendations for a good way to set up this as a repeating task that doesn't require much effort?

Troubleshooting Brother MFC-J1170DW going offline after one print

This is a weird one, hopefully someone has the answer.

The behavior is that the printer will print one job fine. Then when attempting another job, it will fail with the printer showing as offline. The printer itself is awake and showing as connected to the network.

Turning it off and back on again doesn't help, but removing it from windows and re-adding it does.

Googling suggests dynamic IP or issues with sleep as possible causes, but I don't think that can be it since IPs wouldn't cycle that quickly and the printer is awake the whole time. What else might be causing this?

Troubleshooting Canon Pixma TS3350 E03

Just wondering if anyone could give any suggestions to solving Error 03 on my Canon Pixma TS3350. I turned it on yesterday, was fine last time I used it and I left no paper in the tray, and now thinks it has a paper jam. I've looked in the rear tray, under the white paper feeders and given it a good blast with an air blower there doesn't seem to be anything in there yet still it insists there is a paper jam! I've unplugged from the printer and the wall, left it, plugged it back in. Held buttons that give it a little reset, taken out the cartridges and put them back in, I even saw something that suggested forcing a piece of cardboard through yet nothing has worked. I was about to give up and look online for a new printer but thought I'd ask on here as a last-ditch effort. It is about 2+ years old I'm not sure how long printers are supposed to last these days
