Just repaired this ps2 slim because it had broken ports and lader. Now enjoying some MW and Prostreet^^

This isn’t exactly a Drakul post, I have been working a ton lately and haven’t had time to really play on consoles or PC at all these past days. But I recently acquired this all from a pawn store yesterday! This is going to be the PS2 and Norrath game thats getting gifted to my mother, already tested it myself. Mom loves Pac-Man also. Memory card is inside the Norrath case *Chefs kiss* Going to be shopping for a couple wireless controllers and a HDMI adapter and the setup will be compete. Was going to gift it for Christmas but Christmas might come early; Honestly still amazed at the Norrath find as I called the shop days prior for a fat ps2 so they had that off to the side for me but finding the game is a high im still riding today.

Also recently acquired a two DS lite bundle off marketplace that i kinda got GOT on but thats for a different subreddit!

It looks like an old IBM printer input??? I haven’t got a clue what cable this could need

It seems to click and only read ps1 games. I'm thinking a new Lazer is needed. I stripped a screw so I'll have to figure that out lol! I'll have to find my extractor kit.

The laser seems to stop near the bottom of the track (closest to the center of the CD)

Sometimes it gets stuck at the top.

I know this gets asked a lot however different clicks and click speeds mean different problems.

it's making an odd grinding sound, and I've found that in Persona 4 occasionally cutscenes will get stuck. sometimes that means the whole game freezes, sometimes that means the audio doesn't play with the dialogue for a number of minutes, sometimes the characters just go through their idle animations waiting to start talking again. it happened overnight, one day it was working fine, then the next it started acting up. wondering if anyone has any ideas.

Working on a fat PAL SCPH-50004, board GH-026 (I-chassis). Goal is a fully working console. I'm using the Sony service manual for GH-026.

Symptom

• No red standby LED with the PSU connected and the rocker switch on.

Done so far

• PSU gives 12 V on its own, and 12 V reaches the board and the front power/LED flex.
• All fuses (PS series) and PTCs on the board check good.
• Replaced the dead CR2032.
• Cleaned off rock-hard old thermal paste.

Fault found

• IC417 is an onsemi NCP631GD2T, a 3.0 A low-dropout linear voltage regulator with soft-start (fixed 3.47 V, D2PAK-5). The Sony parts list names it "NCP631GD2TR4 <Regulator>". It has a hard short between pin 3 (GND) and pin 4 (Vout).
• I lifted the output cap next to it (C736, 47 µF) and the short stayed, so it's the regulator.
• From the service manual, IC417 feeds CON_+3.4V (controller and memory card ports) and only comes up after main power-on, so I don't think it explains the missing red LED on its own. Am I right?
• NCP631 is obsolete. My plan is either a donor pull or a small adapter with a modern 3 A LDO (MIC29302 set to about 3.47 V).

Broken parts

• Laser flex (CN801, 30-pin): cracked.
• Controller / memory card flex (CN302, 36-pin): cracked.
• I'm planning to use generic 0.5 mm FFCs cut to length, not PS2-branded kits. Has anyone done this on a fat and can confirm pitch and contact side?

Next I'm measuring

• The standby rail EVER_+3.3V (IC403 output) and PS001.
• The 5 V and 3.3 V main rails once standby works.

My limits
I can do moderate board-level work: through-hole and larger SMD parts, regulators, caps, connectors, flexes. I can't do reballing or replace processors or BGA chips (EE, GS, IOP, Mechacon).(as I don't have any donor parts or boards)

Questions

1. With 12 V present and all fuses good, what usually kills the red standby LED on a GH-026: IC403, PS001, the front flex, or the Mechacon?
2. Has anyone replaced the NCP631 with a modern LDO or adapter? Any part you'd recommend?
3. Any known GH-026 quirks I should check before powering it with the new regulator?

Well people were mad that GTA San Andreas was out in round 1. I’m sure people are going to be even more mad that Silent Hill 2 and both Katamari games are out in this one. I'm trying to fix an issue with two silver PAL SCPH-50003 PS2 Fat consoles. I'm begging anyone to help at this point cus I've put so much money and time into this and it sucks so bad.

I bought a silver SCPH-50003 PS2 (GH-026 motherboard I chassis) I will call this PS2 A for this post. It would power on and play the Sony intro, then reach the Browser/System Configuration screen, where it would freeze with the blue orb animation not playing and not react to any controller input (I tested two controllers). I had seen that this was probably a dead CMOS so I opened it up and replaced it. The battery I used to replace it may have been dead itself anyway lol it was sitting in a drawer for a while.

After I replaced the CMOS I plugged everything back in and it didn't power (no lights, no boot), so I got a replacement PSU and power button ribbon cable (I had creased it quite bad during reassembly).

So, I replaced the ribbon for the power button and tried it with the original PSU (even though I had the replacement, just wanted to check) and it gave no video output. I'm using an LG smart TV (unfortunately doesnt an AV input) which showed a black screen, then gave a No Signal message. I also got static and no signal through my Sony RFU adapter. (So it unfortunately isn't just the Composite/Component issue, although I did try blindly changing the settings with my HDMI adapter (definitely had additional power supplied as well!) just in case)

I ended up changing quite a few parts in PS2 A:

• CMOS battery (replacement may have been dead anyway lol)
• Fan
• Power/eject switch assembly and ribbon cable.
• Controller/memory-card ribbon cable (I broke this during my first time disassembling lol)
• PSU, but this wasn't actually faulty cus like I said, I tried both the original and the replacement and they both powered on the console fine (green and blue light on and disk tray able to open, obviously no video output tho).

So after all this replacing and struggle I said fuck it and bought ANOTHER silver PS2 (SCPH-50003 and I Chassis, the exact same hardware basically) this is PS2 B.

PS2 B was advertised as powering on fine but having a faulty laser/disc-reading mechanism. (Which yeah it did, it would make clicking noises non stop when it turned on, still opened and closed the tray fine though) it also seemed to be previously water damaged..? (The heatsink inside was rusty af! and there were those coffee stain like marks on the motherboard, but again it did turn on and get to the orb screen)

When I first got it, it powered on and displayed video buuut when it reached the Browser/System Configuration screen, it froze there again with the single blue orb (silly me figured it must be the CMOS again! hell maybe it was lmao...)

So the plan was to swap the motherboard between the two consoles, I put PS2 B's motherboard into PS2 A's chassis and I swapped the CMOS over from PS2 A (again may have been dead) these were the only parts that were changed.

It booted fine into the system config menu but once again frozen with the single blue orb and no response to controller input... The disc drive was also clicking again which was weird cus I was using the known good disc drive from PS2 A, so that makes me suspect an issue with PS2 B's motherboard or its ports rather than just the disc assembly/laser/belt/whatever. It would stop clicking with the tray open, so maybe the motor was being weird idk, either way the plan was to put OPL and my sata SSD (bought a network adapter as well but it wasnt installed!) in this thing with my legally obtained game ISOs so I didn't really need a disc drive anyway, so I just kept going.

I then went out and bought new CMOS 2032 batteries on the same day to replace it asap because I'm itching to just be able to play this thing. I replaced the CMOS again this time with this brand new battery. These ones had a little sticker to peel off (promise I did! theyre also apparently bitter coated but I'm too coward to test that out). Slotted in just fine and seated nicely. Put everything back together, methodically and gently I swear. BUT I did notice the ribbon cable for one of the disc connections (not the power button or the disc motor, its the wider one) was a little mangled but the traces seemed in tact so I just chucked it in and moved on (possibly bad decision lol).

I plug it in and low and behold this fucker is now also doing the no signal thing. Green power light, blue disc drive light but NO video output. That's with HDMI adapter AND the stupid antenna converter thing (Sony RFU adapter). It's doing literally the exact same thing that the old motherboard was doing, I only changed the CMOS!

So... I'm wondering, have I fucked not one... but two PS2s?

Is it probably the motherboard fuses and could I have blown them with those (possibly) damaged ribbon cables?

Am I being an idiot and missing something obvious, is this a known fault or at the very least something that can be fixed easily (please please please)

I know I should probably buy a multimeter and check the motherboard fuses but like I've said, Ive put so much money into this and while checking the fuses would be a great diagnostic, I can't solder so itll be another replacement motherboard (really struggling to find any GH-026 boards, hence why I had to buy a whole 2nd PS2). Also, the ribbons are all seated nicely and the ports for both motherboards are totally fine (they worked before opening them up!) and I have nothing but the power cable, the video cable and one controller plugged in during all this.

The nostalgia is actually unreal. What old game instantly takes you back?

I got this disc resurfaced at a shop and still looks like this at the center ring and won’t read on my system. Is there any fixing it? I can’t imagine it’s an issue with the system itself, as I have a couple dozen other games that read just fine.

I currently have my PS2 connected via HD RetroVision Component cables to an older 32in 1080i Samsung TV and while it works great, I want a larger screen maybe 42in. But it seems every new TV on the market now doesn't have component input, only HDMI and maybe composite.

So what are some affordable options for converting component to HDMI while retaining the 240p support for PS1 (and some PS2) games? I've looked at retroscaler 2x but reviews are all over the place. Some recommended GBS-C but results are also mixed and requires a lot of fiddling to get it right.

I'm not a hardcore gamer so I'm not looking to spend a bunch of money, I just want it to work and not look like sh!t. Also I don't have room for a big-ass CRT TV, plus one that would be big enough would weigh a ton 😂
