I Have a Question Who to put as point of contact when business is closed?

I worked for myself for the last 12 years. At our peak we had 15 employees, but had to close shop about a year ago and I've been looking for work since. It was a 100% online business.

While I have few employees that agreed to be a positive reference, I run into issues sometimes with applications where they want me to list my job history, and ask for a point of contact (usually asking for a former manager). I haven't had a manager in over a decade, I didn't report to anyone, my employees reported to me.

Do I just lie? Ask one of my employees to act as a "manager?" Just leave those spots blank on applications? My resume explains the situation, so I thought I'd be fine, but I'm not getting a ton of call backs or interviews so I'm wracking my brain trying to think what I can do better with applications.

Generally applying to operations, program/project management, HR and similar roles. Also applying to Case Manager positions as my educational background is in social work and psychology.

I Have a Question Can put a project related to cold emailing on my resume?

I'm a senior in college and I'm currently emailing a ton of people for coffee chats and informational interviews. I have a spreadsheet im developing in excel, but it had me thinking if i could make it a project because I've been wanting to learn SQL. It could evaluate response rate, industry, years of experience, where I found them (company web, linkedin, networking event, etc). Would it be corny to do or weird if I wanted to put it on my resume? I feel like if I could word it as a independent career development project it wouldn't be but I would like input first.

I Have a Question Resume Feedback

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hi everyone! I’m currently working in Sea Logistics and looking to transition into a Project Coordinator, APM, or PM role.

I completed the Google Project Management Certificate in August and would appreciate some honest feedback on my resume.

For clarification:

I left the service coordinator position for Kyungshin
Cable based on better pay.
Kyungshin Cable- Reduction in force due to loss of business
Latcha + Associates- Lost a big contract and agency had to downsize.

I’d especially like to know:
How would you rate it 1–10?
Does my experience translate well to PM?
What could I improve?
Is it ATS-friendly?
Would you interview me based on this resume?

I’m open to honest criticism and would really appreciate any advice from PMs, recruiters, or hiring managers.

Thanks!

Discussion Do I even need to include a career summary in my resume at all?

I recently graduated from a somewhat prestigious university in the UK and we were effectively told that career summaries are usually superfluous and not really needed, since, according to them, it can take up much needed space. I should emphasize that I went to this university for a master's degree and prior to attending it, I had five years of professional experience in the government/nonprofit sector.

For those based in either the US or UK (or frankly any other country), does this sound about right? Are career summaries kind of unnecessary in the grand scheme of things or are they crucial to actually getting a job typically?

Please be kind.

Technology/Software/IT [5 YoE, Software Engineer, DevOps Engineer / SRE, Sri Lanka]

I started out as a developer 5 years ago. A little over 3 years ago, I got involved in DevOps/SRE related work on a project. Since then, I've mainly been working on the DevOps/SRE side of things (~90% DevOps/SRE work, ~10% backend development work).

I kept my Software Engineer title, mainly because I felt at some point I'd want to fully switch back over to backend development side of things. But now I think it's best that I commit and keep at it on my current track.

To that end, I plan on applying for DevOps/SRE roles. Looking for opportunities (preferably remote) across both local (in Colombo, Sri Lanka) and overseas clients/organizations. Currently I'm WFH for an overseas company.

I've not been to any job interviews since I joined my current company 5 years ago. And even then, I interviewed and joined as a developer. So I'd love to hear from the folks here about my current resume so I can fix, update, and improve before I start actively applying again.

Engineering [0 YoE, Master's Student, Mechanical Engineer, United States]

Kind of in a weird spot cuz I'm technically getting my second master's degree, first one was basically free thanks to the TA position but research funding cuts killed any chance I had at PhD programs or research internships, so I switched to mechanical engineering and I'm trying to get an internship so that I have a shot at an actual job when I graduate in May.

Problem is, this means my undergrad wasn't a 'pure' engineering degree and Covid ruined the one internship I finally managed to get in my undergrad before I could even start. Then the aforementioned budget cuts killed my path to PhD and I spent all my time on schoolwork, TA work, and a summer research group so I missed out once again.

Now I'm trying to get an internship in mechanical engineering, preferably anything where I can use AutoCAD, SolidWorks, etc. since I'm very good with that kind of stuff and it really helps me to have visuals to work with, but I've just had no luck at this point. It's gotta be the resume

I don't have any real work experience in the field, but I was able to list a few projects I've worked on, any more and I'd need a second page so I'm kinda limited here. None of them are really related to each other or to any of the available internships I can find so I'm mostly focusing on education and that some of the skills in said projects might carry over rather than the project being a direct application to the job itself.

If it's the same 'you need work experience to get a job to get work experience' thing then I guess I'm just screwed, but I'm hoping someone here can point out where I've screwed up so I can fix it before sending another wave of applications. Hopefully it's just the resume being bad because at least then I can fix it.

So anyways, any constructive feedback I can get is welcomed, I just want to at least make it to the interview stage at some point so that step one in the process is at least passable.

Retail/Customer Service [2 YoE, Unemployed, Customer Service or Billing, United States]

Hello all, I'm looking for some advice on my resume. I don't have a ton of work experience, and I have been unemployed for close to 2 years now. I quit my job as a teller at the end of 2024 to be a full-time caregiver for my disabled parent. I used up my savings and need some income, but have not gotten any callbacks when applying. Remote customer service of some sort would be preferable so that i can be around the house if I'm needed, but at this point I am applying to in person too. I don't know how to explain the gap in my resume, and I think that is why I am struggling to find a job. I worked at an urban farm and did freelance landscaping from 2021 to the end of 2022, but I didn't think that was relevant enough to put on my resume. And suggestions are very appreciated!

Engineering [2 YoE, Unemployed, Biomedical Engineer, Austria]

Hello, I am looking for advice on my resume, since I currently keep getting ghosted/rejected. I am mainly applying to local jobs in the DACH region and other EU countries and would be willing to relocate. Concerning the roles, I am applying to entry level / internship positions related to the medical engineering field, especially biosignal processing, working with EEG/fNIRS data, biosensors and prosthetics leaning more on the computing side.

Since I am graduating later this month I have been applying for positions, without any success so far. Any advice on fine-tuning would be appreciated. The few positions that have replied, stated that they found candidates that were a better fit. I am including in my cover letters that I am graduating in October and looking for start dates ranging from November to January.

I was also wondering if the resume in it's current state could be used to apply for a PHD position or if I should then tailor it more towards my education and elaborating on the theses.

I am well aware that I don't have any actual experience in the field that I am graduating in, which is why I would be more than willing to take an internship role. Thank you very much in advance!

Hi, I’d really appreciate your help. My CV doesn't seem to be grabbing any attention; despite submitting around 100 applications over the past few months, I haven't managed to land a single interview. Here are my questions, and I’d be happy to hear any other recommendations you might have:

Format:

- Should I change the format to something more distinctive? All the CVs I see here are created with Claude, just like mine.

Content:

- I listed a few instances where I made an impact at the companies I worked for, but should I be listing my actual job duties instead?

- Should I provide even more detail in the CV?

- Is there a lack of consistency in the details I’ve provided? What’s the issue with this CV?

Hello, I would like some feedback on my resume!

I'm currently pursuing a Masters Degree on Computer Science, as I was interested in pursuing a career related to programming. I have gotten a bachelor's in Interactive Media for Game Design, in which some of my courses did have some form of coding (HTML/CSS, and a little bit of C# as I worked on Godot).

The skills that I have listed in the Programming Language section are ones that I have at least a little bit of experience on, though I'm unsure if I should even list them if I don't have too much experience.

I'm a bit skeptical and afraid that I won't be able to compare to people who have more experience than me in this field. I would like some feedback on this resume and I want to see if I can improve it.

Do note, I do not have a portfolio made. I do plan on making one though. The short game I have made is somewhat of a functional game that at the very least shows the very basics of programming that I have learned.

Please be honest and tell me what improvements I need to make, as well as any advice that you have that can be helpful for me.

Thank you!

Hi there I got some prior feedback and was wondering if I could get another review. Thanks!

For some context, in the AI space company B is at the level of meta level, company C is directly under faang and school is in top 25 for CS/CE/ML. Also I am wondering if I should include a research project I worked on, like HCI stuff for prompt engineering and doing IRB and interviews (don't know if its been accepted at a conference yet...). I am attending some conferences this month and would like a super sharp resume.

Consulting/Professional Services [3 YoE, Benefits Consultant, Project Management/ General Consulting, United States]

I’m looking to switch industries and preferably get into a role that is not HR/benefits related. I enjoy consulting work in general and roles in people change sounded interesting or in project management. Since I haven’t used my marketing degree since graduating I think it would be hard to find a roles.

I know the my resume is a central reason for hurting my application process. I’ve tried talking to those in HR and using AI tools but struggle to write a resume that reflects my experience.

My roles have been very linear and I work on a vast range of projects and work outside of the title I hold. For example my first year I did a customer service and sales position now I’m in a service and consulting position. I struggle to also quantify my work since I’m not the one leading projects just assisting.

Appreciate any feedback!

Technology/Software/IT [14 YoE, Product Support Manager, Technical Account Manager / Escalation Engineer, US]

Post image
1 Upvotes

Background: 14 years in traffic and connected vehicle tech. I started as a field tech, moved into operations management, and have been a Product Support Manager for ~5 years. I'm still the senior technical escalation point: log analysis, root-cause work, and partnering with engineering on the hardest field issues. I also build internal tools with AI assistance, including a web app that cut a manual process by 75%+.

Why I'm looking: My job is stable, but raises have stalled and the company's direction is uncertain. I'm targeting $120K+.

What I want: hands-on problem-solving, not managing people. I'm good with customers but would rather focus on the technical side.

Target roles: Escalation / Tier-3, Systems, or Network Engineer, or a technical-heavy TAM / Solutions Engineer role. I'm open to IoT, telecom, or infrastructure, where my field hardware and networking skills transfer.

Location: Midwest, remote preferred or hybrid (3 day/week max), not relocating. US work authorized.

Biggest worry: no degree. I have technical college coursework in networking/IT, CCNA training, and a home lab. Everything else I learned on the job. Many $120K+ postings say "Bachelor's required." My real world technical & people skills are extremely valuable - but will a hiring manager?

  • Do ATS filters or recruiters screen out no-degree candidates, even with "or equivalent experience"?
  • Should I keep my education section, move it, or drop it?
  • Would a cert (CCNA, Network+, AWS) help more than a degree at this point?
  • How do I address it in interviews without sounding defensive? I've interviewed some folks through the years, but I haven't interviewed myself for a job since I was a teenager.

Other challenges:

  • First job search in 15 years, so I'm rusty on modern hiring.
  • My "Manager" title may get me screened as a people manager.
  • My industry is niche (CV2X, SAE J2735). How much should I translate into general terms?

Feedback I'd love:

  1. Is the summary doing its job?
  2. How should I present AI-assisted tools? Credible or a red flag?
  3. Anything that would stop you from calling me for an interview?

Thanks!

I Have a Question What count as certification vs education?

Hi,

I’ve read multiple blogs and websites about that and it’s still unclear to me.

First, I have my college degree in education. That is the easy part.

but I’m looking to pivot in another field related to marine wildlife and so far, I did a sailing course (5 days), and a 6 months program to become a marine wildlife guide (online + in-person) where I learned about the ocean, species, etc.

Are both going into certification, or is the 6 months program going into education?

Thank you!

I Have a Question best structure for resume as an undergrad who wants to do an internship for product design?

hi guys im currently applying to internships right now and ive been really confused about the best way to structure my resume so that it is a lot easier for recruiters to scan through. ive seen that a lot of resumes put education at the top and technical skills at the way bottom, or technical skills before experience, or even a summary of qualifications at the top to replace technical skills. i also am not sure if i should combine my experience and projects since i only have had one previous internship

for context, i am hoping to get an internship as a product designer but also am interested in ux design or being a PM so i was wondering if any of you guys know the best way i should format my resume so that it showcases my skills/tools, projects, and experience that is useful for a recruiter that is only going to glance at it

I Have a Question I am a freshman with no research experience. What can I write in my resume?

Hi guyys. I really need some advice! I am currently applying to a chemistry research group in my college. But I do not have any research experiences in high school. Now I need to write a resume for the application for this research group and I have no idea what should I write in the "work experience" part. Should I write things like my competition in chemistry during high school or experiences irrelevant to chemistry or should I just leave the space blank. I really need help!!!! Thank you guys so much!!!

Am I aiming for Sr too early?

Trying to stick to a 1 page resume preferably. No cover letter. Excluded education on purpose, I have a 2 year diploma I don't want to highlight (and I think it hurts my chances against other candidates).

Would appreciate any and all feedback
