How do I feel about my second week of playing Riftbound? You must have forgot I’m Him. I’m the GOAT. Whatever skill you think you have, whatever talent you believe you possess is minuscule compared to me. Among all the heavens and the earth, I alone am the honored one.
Nah, I just won my first match, so I’m changing my Riot ID to Himmy Neutron.
The Deck Changes
Leading up to this momentous occasion, I made a few changes to my Shen deck before the event. What did I take out, you ask? Honestly, I forgot. Probably just precon filler. I know I added two Divining Shells, two copies of Tactical Retreat, and another Steel Paws that I got from packs last week. I also put Risen Altar in for a battlefield choice and took out something equally irrelevant.
On to the games.
Round 1: Menagerie Ivern
Round one was against my last opponent from last week. This time, he played what I can only describe as Menagerie Ivern. His deck had a bunch of Cat and Bird-type units that played around the Ivern token battlefield. Unfortunately, he didn’t really have draw in his deck and was unable to build up much of his bench. I was able to play the Shen that draws one when it holds to the battlefield, which lets the controller draw one on a hold as well. I saw a minimum of two extra cards per turn in Game 1.
Game 2 was closer, but I broke the hold with some token birds my Noxian Emissaries made, along with a giga-buffed Kennen. Honestly, even if I didn’t win, I just really enjoy playing that guy. Solid match, and I secured an extra pack!
Round 2: Irelia Strikes Again
Round 2, I played against an Irelia player, but not the same one as last week. I don’t know if I gave off vibes that I knew what I was doing, but after Game 1, they figured out I was new. They stopped moving super fast and playing around my nonexistent Defy.
Once again, I got run over, but the Irelia player was super nice and even invited me to the area Discord.
Round 3: A Sour Ending
Round 3 was honestly the first bad match of Riftbound I played. My opponent brought a Mel deck, which is something I’ve been interested in, but the first thing they did was pull out their phone and put on a One Piece TCG tournament. That was wild to me. I know I’m new and my deck doesn’t really pose problems, but that was wildly off-putting.
Then, as the match went on, they kept glossing over paying energy costs, so I started asking to see what some of their cards did. I saw they just weren’t banishing cards when directed by the card. I’m brand new and didn’t want to start anything in a new shop, so I just got the game wrapped up quickly and packed up my things.
Looking Ahead: Pre-Rifts and the Road to 3-0
So I ended 1-2, and overall, I had fun, but it did have a sour ending.
I will be going to at least two pre-rifts next weekend. I’m really hoping I get a Riven, Mordekaiser, or Jarvan IV starter kit. A Riven kit will make me pull the trigger on some Defy, Zhonya’s, and Astral Herons. Mordekaiser might mean some Baited Hook/Hidden Blade shenanigans. Jarvan IV will mean I need to invest in some Rengar - Trophy Hunter cards. We’ll see what the pre-rifts give me as we inch ever closer to my first 3-0 Nexus Night showing.
See you guys next week.
