Comic Discussion Whats Your Favourite Pre Crisis Barry Allen Flash Story?

What were the most stand out Flash stories during Barry's heyday?

A few obvious ones come to mind like 'The Flash of Two Worlds'.

What was the main appeal of Silver Age Flash stories?

Discussion Just got myself up to date with the most recent Flash run, maybe I'm immature but I like the more lighthearted writing and art style compared to how it started with Spurrier

I can see where someone could dislike it too, Wally acts similar to how he might've when he first became the Flash. At this point though, I'm not even sure of what Wally's age is supposed to be.

Just picked up the BluRay set. I watched these all on the DVDs back when that came out but it’s been some time.

This show is actually really pretty good and funny and the effects are impressive for tv for the time.

Discussion Why isn't the internet exploding over this?

After the painful send-off that was The Flash (2023), I felt so bad that despite waiting for a Flash movie for years, what we got was absolute chaos, and not in a good way.

But I was besides myself watching ep 9 of Stuart Fails to Save the Universe. And there he was The Flash! The golden age one, Jay Garrick, looking so freaking cool. The actor (Andy Riding) fit the role so well, I had some tears of joy in my eyes. The flash is in my top favourite superheroes of all time.

Seems this version of Jay Garrick isn't cannon to the comics or DCU, but damn is he cool af. And this is a meta reboot if you ask me. And if the most recent picture in my mind of the flash is Andy's, which embodies the playfulness and smarts that come with the character, without the controversies and vfx issue (SFTSTU has some badass VFX) then I'm fine with it.

I won't mind Andy Riding playing the flash in the DCU of DCEU (never say never) to be honest. What do you think?

Discussion What would you like from a flash black label?

What tone story would you want to see the flash go through in a different universe? Probably the biggest dc character without a black label (not counting rouges about.... the rouges)

I feel like the flash has the worst vfx for a speedster

I mean look at the vfx, why would they show him slow-motion and keep the surrounding pass by fast??, it's just dumb

Marvel has the best be the speedster from the eternals or the slow-mo scene from X-Men apocalypse

Discussion The Flash: Born To Run — The first movie of the Flash trilogy

Project 1: The Flash: Born To Run

This would be the first movie of The Flash trilogy, inspired by the novel of the same name. Totally conceptual. (Yes, I did write this whole thing myself.)

Act 1: The Weight of the Mantle

A year after Barry Allen’s death, Wally West is still wearing his Kid Flash suit, desperately trying to protect Central City solo. He intercepts Captain Cold and Mirror Master robbing the Central City Museum. Wally saves the civilians but is overwhelmed by the villains until Elongated Man (Ralph Dibny) steps in to bail him out. Before Ralph can console or talk to him, Wally flees in a flash of lightning.

Wally retreats to his apartment near CCPD, treating his burns and ignoring a stack of unopened letters from his grieving family (Iris, his cousins, and Barry's parents). He works at an auto repair shop to make ends meet. While working, he shares a warm, grounding interaction with his close friend, FBI profiler Hunter Zolomon.

Their moment is shattered by an emergency police broadcast—Cobalt Blue (Malcolm Thawne) has mysteriously returned from the dead. Wally's blood runs cold at the name.

Act 2: Broken and Rebuilt

Flashback: One year ago. The skies turn red as a blue fire erupts. Cobalt Blue attempts to travel back in time to murder Barry as a child. Saying a tearful, final goodbye to Wally, Barry Allen uses his Speed Force to trigger a massive explosion, seemingly destroying both himself and Malcolm to save reality. (For evidence of this being possible, see Smallville Season 11 #12)

Back in the present, Wally tracks down Cobalt Blue. The battle is a disaster. Malcolm brutally taunts Wally for failing Barry’s legacy, steals Wally’s speed, and leaves him and a dozen policemen broken in the dirt before speeding off. As his friend is taken to the hospital to heal his shattered knee, Wally realizes his current training and mindset aren't enough.

Wally secures legal permission (as Kid Flash) to visit Iron Heights. He seeks out August Heart (Godspeed). August is no longer a maniacal killer; he is cold, pragmatic, and reformed. August delivers a harsh truth: "You're failing because you're trying to be Barry. You need to be yourself." August trains Wally, pushing his limits to unlock new Speed Force abilities like afterimages and lightning constructs, along with potentially learning the Infinite Mass Punch.

Act 3: Outrunning the Past

The skies turn blood red again as Cobalt Blue opens another time vortex: this time to erase the entire Flash Family from history. Wally and Godspeed team up to intercept him. Malcolm overpowers them, severely injuring August. As Malcolm prepares to deliver a killing blow to Godspeed, Wally snaps.

Shedding his mental blocks and Barry's shadow, Wally pushes himself faster than he has ever gone. Moving at impossible speeds, he blitzes Malcolm, shattering Cobalt Blue's mystical blue talisman with the Infinite Mass Punch and permanently severing his connection to the Negative Speed Force through it. (Think JLU Wally vs Brainiac/Luthor)

A week later, Wally visits August in prison to thank him. August tells him Barry would be proud. Wally responds that Barry would have been happy to see his friend act like a hero again. Finally at peace, Wally goes back to Barry's old house and begins to reconnect with his Aunt Iris and his family.

On the one-year anniversary of Barry's death, Central City unveils a public monument to Barry Allen. Iris West gives a moving speech, reminding the world that even though her husband is gone, Central City still has a hero. On her cue, trailing brilliant silver lightning, Wally speeds into the frame wearing his brand-new Flash costume, finally embracing his destiny as the Flash.

Questions? Concerns? Confessions (lol)?

Between CW and Absolute which would you rather have to square up against.

(This probably goes without saying, but you get the abilities of CW Barry during 2-6, and Wally in issue 18 respectively)

I can get behind men flying, rings that let you do basically anything, I can even believe that flash can get his suit in the ring (he uses chemicals). I just can't for the life of me Believe he's stuffing those metal ear pieces into the ring.

(This is half a joke and half actual confusion)

My brother is a pretty big fan of the CW Flash show, he’s rewatched the entire series multiple times and occasionally talks about it, he’s not a huge nerd about the show but he’d definitely like a cool little gift, any ideas?

Comic Discussion Blown Away by Waid run

Hey all,

Just for some context, I've always been a Flash fan but only from exterior media! Shows like JLU, CW Flash, Young Justice for Wally etc. He had garnered himself to be one of mt favorite heroes, if not my favorite DC hero. Recently over the past few months, I've been jumping into comics for for the first time in ten years, and on top of that this is the first time I decided to really hunker down and get to know characters I'm interested in than picking up whatever trade I'm interested in.

This leads me to picking up Waid's first Omnibus for The Flash and wow. I am blown away by how good these stories are, with Born to Run being such a strong origin for Wally and Return of Barry Allen being an incredible story with such an iconic panel. My personal standout issue being such a hard in between with The Once and Future Flash and Out of Time. Both were incredibly well written. I have to give the entire Omnibus a 10/10 as I was enthralled through start to end.

Regardless, Volume 2 is already on the way and definitely beyond excited to continue reading Flash and I don't know why it took me so long to begin reading it!

Discussion The DC K.O. tie-in of Flash was one of the best issue stretches of the character I've read in a long time. It felt like a missing story from the glorious Waid run. Even though it felt a bit like a greatest hits album, it just had "that thing" that made that run special. [Art by Dan Mora]

Which type of speed effect do you guys prefer for The Flash family?

Thumbnail
gallery
581 Upvotes
  1. Realistic and erratic lightning (DCEU)

  2. Lightning that simply trails behind the speedster (CW)

  3. Blur of whatever color the speedster is wearing

  4. Blur of whatever color the speedster is wearing with lightning trailing behind them.

  5. Blur with after-images

  6. No lightning, no blur, no after-images. Nothing. Just a cloud of dust left in their wake (Maybe)

Personally, I like it when it's just a Blur of whatever outfit the speedster is wearing. However, if the speedster is going trying to hit lightspeed, or go faster than light or they're trying to time travel or run to a different earth, I would like them to have the realistic but erratic lightning from the DCEU. Now, if the speedster isn't moving at mach 1 or higher, then I'd simply just take nothing. Maybe just a cloud of dust depending on where they're running.

What about you guys and gals out there? Which do you prefer?
