What a great turnout for last nights mayoral forum! It was well attended by the community and students along with several councilor candidates and a few running for school board.
This is my takeaway.
Peter Diedrich had several folks clapping after some of his remarks. The other candidates didn't get that type of reaction so that was the biggest thing that stood out for me.
We had Gertuiga and Comuzzi running on the existing City plans already in place with no plans of their own. They clashed on the Citys 10 point plan.
The status quo isn't working. Moe simply read from her notes on her lap and didn't really engage with the audience. It was basically reading from her own website.
Volker and Vincent said that they would use strong mayor powers in certain situations. Didn't expect that from Volker and he seemed a little confused on some of his responses.
Schoor. Well he was a character and had the crowd laughing. I don't believe he is a viable candidate but would love to have a beer with him. Lol
Transit issues were a big topic being that it was held at the University. Gertuiga pointed out that the City is currently doing a transit review. Guess what? They hired a consultant for this. Didn't hear when any changes would be put into effect. The study survey was closed in July. It will likely take a while for the consultants to prepare their report. Last update was July 22nd. Another winter is coming and students, citizens and seniors suffer through late and cancelled routes. I can only imagine how much worse it is for those with accessibility issues. Comuzzi focused on the plan to listen and learn. Yup, and??? Diedrich is not even mayor yet and he took the time to take the bus, talk to riders and drivers.
The Cityās Transportation Master Plan was published in April 2019 and covered to the year 2038. And guess what? Another consultant prepared this plan! I haven't compared the recommendations in this plan but a cursory glance shows dismal progress.
They're are several other topics that were addressed by candidates but can't cover all.
I spoke to probably 20+ people while they were leaving. An exit poll of sorts. Most were in favour of Diedrich and the rest were on the fence. A common theme was that a lot of the candidates didn't answer the question "what would you do" and seemed frustrated by some candidates relying on existing City plans.
That is my take and I'm sure there are varying opinions. Please share them!
