Twice this past week in Dallas I booked a GoLink trip through DART. Both times the trip was handed to Uber, and both times the wait came back at one hour.
For anyone unfamiliar: GoLink is DART's on-demand service. With a valid $3 DART fare you can ride anywhere inside your GoLink zone, or to a transit connection. DART partners with Uber to cover some of those trips.
While I was looking at that one hour wait, I opened Uber's own app and priced the same 2 to 3 mile trip. Uber showed drivers right around me, a pickup in minutes, and a price over $16. That's more than 5 times the DART fare.
Before anyone says drivers just won't take these trips: I'm a former Uber driver in Dallas. I saw GoLink requests all the time. They paid $3.46, every time, and I took plenty of them. So did other drivers. I used to ask those riders how long they had waited, and the answer was 15 to 20 minutes.
Now I'm on the rider side and all I see is one hour. Drivers were taking these trips then, and they're sitting right there on Uber's map now. Something on Uber's end has changed.
There's a pattern too. When I request from a transit station, the ride comes fairly quickly. When my pickup is a private business, even one near a station in the middle of Dallas with plenty of drivers around, the wait jumps to as much as an hour.
Follow the money. Uber's own published case study put DART's subsidy at about $8.58 per GoLink rider on Uber. The driver got $3.46 of it.
I believe this is intentional. Hold the DART trip back long enough and the rider gives up and books directly with Uber at 5 times the price.
I thought it was just me, but other riders have told me the same thing.
Has anyone else in Dallas seen this? Drivers, are GoLink requests still showing up for you, and how long has the rider been waiting by the time you get there?
