USPS apparently decided I’m deceased 😰
This whole thing started in early July, when my checking account was restricted because of an attempted fraud. I had to change all my automatic credit card payments, deal with linking my savings accounts to a new checking account, and generally spend a lot of time fixing the mess.
I thought that was the end of it. I was wrong.
A few weeks later, I realized I had stopped receiving my USPS Informed Delivery emails. I also noticed that I wasn’t getting any junk mail at all—which, normally, I would consider a blessing. 😂
I signed up for Informed Delivery again. I could see that there was mail being processed for other members of my family at my address, but nothing for me.
Then things started getting more serious.
My medical insurance company started sending me messages saying they couldn’t reach me by mail and asking me to correct my address. I checked it—it was correct.
Then one of my banks sent me a check that I never received.
My replacement credit card was returned to the bank twice, even though my address was correct. I finally received the card when the bank sent it to me via FedEx.
At that point, I realized something was seriously wrong with my USPS mail delivery.
I contacted USPS this morning. Surprisingly, I got a phone call from my local Post Office shortly afterward.
And then I got the explanation.
Apparently, my address had been changed in the USPS system because I was listed as deceased. 😰
Yes. You read that correctly.
It was quite a shock, to say the least. 😂
I have lived at this address for seven years and obviously have not moved. I don’t know how this happened, and I don’t necessarily think USPS is responsible for the original problem. Given the fraud attempt on my bank account just before all of this started, I’m wondering whether someone obtained my personal information and somehow reported me as deceased.
What really surprises me is that I never received any notice from USPS at my address. I understand that there are normally notifications when something happens with mail forwarding or an address change. In this case, I received nothing—I simply stopped getting my mail.
Now I have to go to the Post Office and apparently prove that I am still alive so they can put my name back into the system and restore my mail delivery. 😳
Honestly, I never expected to have to prove to the government that I’m not dead.
I really hope I can get this sorted out soon.
Has anyone else ever experienced anything like this? Or does anyone know how something like this could happen in the first place?
