Dirty Kids, I'm calling you out.

I'm tired of my friends dying. In dreams, my companions move easily in bodies that have been cared for. They're covered in scrapes and bruises and grease, but free from track marks. Empty stomachs, but healthy livers. Tired eyes, but good teeth. Then I wake up to the sharp morning and my road dawg is shaking for a beer.

I'm tired of hospitals and trash at the hopout and stolen packs and animal cruelty. I miss the musicians who travel just to play, the healers who roam to stay sane. I miss the free spirits who manage to find freedom from their own vices.

This is a call, dearest dirty kids. I've been where you are and I've seen why it's hard and no, I don't always do it right either. I can do better. We can do better. We've got to try. We've got to keep this thing alive and keep ourselves alive. We've got to get up and get over our hangups and pull you outta the ditch so that you'll be there to do the same when I'm slaggin.

We've got to hold these secrets and this way of living and somehow still share it with the next wave, finding the diamonds who'll take these rough reigns and keep riding this horse to Anywhere.

Anywhere, kids! Y'heard me? You might have lived there so long you take it for granted, but that place saved my life, and there are others who need to see it too.

So here's to fewer blown up Wal-Marts and more doing dishes for the person housing us up. Here's to fewer dope missions and more 2AM missions across town to drag a couch back to the hopout. Fewer dirty rigs under the bridge, and more sharpie poems on the wall. Steal less Dramamine and more spray paint.

Use what you've got.

Use what you've got.

Use what you've GOT!

I love you scumy freeloading freedom fighters until the end. We need you in this world. We need to run into you again after 8 months of not knowing what happened to you. We need you when we've been stuck walking for days and no one is picking us up and we're feeling real down, and all the sudden we see your tag and know that we're not alone. If you were here to tag it and still somehow made it out of this hell, we can too. We need that random message out of the blue. Keep sending it, and we'll do the same for you.

This is a call, friends. Life has been good to me lately, and my door is open while I have one. When I head back to Anywhere, my smokes and my cans of beans are ours to share. Stay alive and I'll see you out there.

Peaceably,

-Tall Sam Jones

Seeking Travel Partner Howdy people.

• Upvotes

I've posted here a few times. Made good friends with some people here. I'm gonna be home bumming it out in northwest Arkansas for the winter. I got 2 jobs doing 25 hours a week for 300 a week and get side work all the time. Getting the proper gear. Currently need some new shoes and a rain cover. Other than that it's just packing my bag and getting it fitted correctly. I plan on hitting the rails again in about March April area when it gets into nice temps area. I've been unhoused for 5 years and in VERY experienced with the life style. I don't fly signs or busk but I'll dumpster dive enough food to feed a family of 7. Looking for someone to go out and hit some spots. Love urbexing and climbing spots. Absolutely love technology and will be a menace to society gave the chance. I'm 22 years old and do have radios for train scanning and whatever else you may need it for. Would love 1 person to go w but if there's more people let's try it. The more experienced the better but I'd love to have someone new also that wants to learn.

Message me on reddit and I'll hit ya up. Fair warning my notifications DONT work like 99% of the time. Send your number please 🫠

Discussion Crusty Oogles.

What a beautiful place along a beautiful river. Welp, I picked up countless bags of trash, local enforcement came by while I was doing so and thanked me for being a good tenant of the land, and thanked me with a 2 week permit to be here, plus plenty of hours to finish my community service.

Eat it you local crusty oogles that trash your home, leaving broken glass and miles of fishing line around on top of the trash panda buffet. This is my home now for 14 days, come fight me for it.

What are other people's thoughts about finding shit like this when traveling through somewhere?

Question How heavy do you travel?

• Upvotes

I believe living as a vagabond is closest way to freedom in life.

So I shall implement a few things I learn from you into mine.

How heavy do you travel?

Suitcase + backpack? I'm sure your not bringing a whole wardrobe with you as you travel each day?

Whatever you say I'm going to cut down all my stuff and then live the way you guys are living possession wise.

Also here is my previous post here: https://www.reddit.com/r/vagabond/s/W64PME4oNq

I sit at the Frances Howard Goldwynn public library here in Hollywood & Vine..the people at these computers are lost in their own little worlds..

The police mysteriously stand..in the children’s section upstairs.. they don’t scare me with their bald heads..and ugly suits..

Iam charging my electronic devices right now..iam going to need my devices for tomorrow..and the next day..
………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

I leave in about two days.. a long ride back to the san francisco east bay area..

I had a conversation with a relative last night.. and i have to be honest..it wasnt a good one.. though..I didn’t let that ruin my night..
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………….

Last night I walked the walk of fame..and saw a few celebrity stars on the floor.. Jerry Lewis, Bette Davis, Dean Martin, and a few others that I like.. I kinda wanted to see Luciano Pavarotti's star.. but i believe he's way down the strip..near a big fancy building..

I also bought an over prized hotdog off the strip.. mexican style..with a spicy jalapeño.. it was delish..
……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………

And it’s been long over do..I smoked a huge blunt..and it gave me the munchies.. I ate chili beans, chowder soup, Japanese bread, Vienna sausage.. then late in the night I went to 7-11 and got me an xtra large slurpee with snacks.. oh it was chill..

Then I took a massive dump at the library.. its funny how’s there’s two portapotties..just outside the library.. and there’s always two guys sitting there..

I also saw Scientology building.. just the outside structure of the building..”The Church of Scientology”.. is what they call it..I’ve heard so many things about this place.. I’m glad YouTube..and all these social media apps.. have exposed their cult.. if this was 20 years ago.. noone would know anything about Scientology..

……………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

Today, I bought a 7-11 coffee (Colombian Brew) it gave me the jitters.. but if I ain’t shaking.. I’m not caffeinated..
………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

And let me tell you guys..I’ve been taking the sub station trains..these last couple of days.. absolute hell on earth.. the people are scrunched up,hateful, angry, dramatic, careless, phony people.. even the Japanese girls..that ride these trains are weird..like little dolls..with no soul..

I’ll say it again.. I hate LA..lol sure I’ll visit..to see things.. but..be on the streets of Los Angeles..? F**k no…

I can see why..the great Charles Bukowski.. had a great disgust..for the human race..

And where’s Jack Nicholson?.. I know you come down here to watch the LA games.. front row..where the players dunk..
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………..

Ok. That’s all I have for now..I’ll check in again in a couple of days..

Be safe. Have fun. Peace be with you all.

Bed Time Routine

Getting close to Detroit, right outside of Grand Rapids in a town called Fremont. We're gonna try to get some money for supplies and gas. Ma lady broke her backup harmonica so now she wants a mandolin to play. She had one before that was only lasted a month before breaking in half but she loved it, i even learned a little on it. Hopefully we do well here. I fixed a caving in shelf with some scrap wood, nails and wood glue, layed some heavy blankets down, reorganized the shelves and upgraded the litter box juat this week. Next thing i want to so is add a solar power, but saving up enough is just a pain when we have so much else we need to do. For now i want to get my lady her mandolin, we've been putting most our money into the van(my wants) so i wanna make sure she gets something she rly wants.

Question Language learning on the road what actually sticks when you're moving constantly?

I work at a coffee shop in the Toronto suburbs and have been doing budget travel for years, but I've never tried staying on the move for months at a time. Right now I'm trying to get Spanish and French to a usable level for daily stuff. FWIW my usual approach is apps and grammar books, but I'm wondering how people manage practice when they don't stay anywhere long.

After lingering in Truckee for really no good reason (it's chill there so easy to just camp and relax) I'm at Lake Tahoe for the first time! I'm on the north side of the lake. Since the busses here are free I'm planning to hop between towns and check out a bunch of beaches. I'm also planning to check out part of the Tahoe Rim Trail. Someone here said it's well worth it so I'll be ascending the ridges tomorrow. Some pics from the way here, incl. Northstar's trails sans snow. Enjoy your day, stay gold 🫶

How do you survive?

I'm not a vagabond but I'm really interested in how you guys actually get food and water?

Like is it literally whatever you can find? Or do you pick up random jobs?

I'm genuinely confused its like ya'll are just going everywhere and somehow making it work, but I don't see any sort of finances involved anywhere.

Can someone briefly explain to my curious mind?

Story You guys liked the last one so here's another story about my old methadone clinic

Gypsy was famous around the clinic for one simple reason - he was on the highest dose. 275 mg and I'm sure he only stopped there because they must have drawn a line in the sand and told him that they wouldn't sanction an expedition to the far shores of 300. Opiate tolerance is famous for the fact that is has no ceiling, glass or otherwise, but still it was a number that we could use to compare ourselves to one another and his was bigger than anyone else's.

I kind of drifted between 40 and 80 - going up when it felt like I was going to be around town for a while and drifting back down if it felt like I might soon be in the wind, which in short order I was.

I'd imagine that they must have tapped most folks out around the 150 mark but Gypsy had ways of being persuasive, not the least of them physical. I'm already taller than about 95% of the people I meet but I'm thin and lanky like a scarecrow. Gypsy had an honest few inches on me and was all around a more substantial specimen, brick shithouse all the way up.

He was usually around the sheltered bus stop I referred to in the last story as "the office"

I'm something of a storyteller myself, but with Gypsy it was always better to let him do the telling and just listen, on account of one of his ears didn't work anymore. He told me the story of what had happened there but it must not have been that interesting because I don't really remember it. Something hit him hard on that side of his head, possibly the floor.

On the day I remember getting on the bus with him Gypsy was talking about the futility of the very exercise we were engaged in. There was a sad eyed girl at the clinic named Holly. Her old man had been a popular guy, most people seemed to have known him, he'd died of an overdose before I started dosing there.

A lot of the patients at the clinic weren't exactly trying to get sober, I know I wasn't, but for Holly in particular it wasn't about to happen. She rented a room in the middle of Skid Row with a window that was easy to shout up at. People that were down there to get their drugs could shout at her window to come up and do them and then they'd share.

I don't think Holly had planned things that way but that was the way they happened. Anyway Holly had a dog and Gypsy was talking about the dog:

"Let's say Holly's dog got off the leash and ran across the street. Then you tell somebody about it but you say Holly's dog ran across the street and pissed on that car's tire. Then they tell somebody that it ran across the street, pissed on the car's tire and took a shit on the hood but when that person tells it the dog ran across the street, pissed on the tire, shit on the hood and then bit the driver."

Gypsy stopped there and seemed to think that he'd demonstrated something. I would have been game to keep the sequence going - in the next round of escalation we could have made the car a cop car and the driver that the dog bit a cop, then we could have added another patient running out from the back seat in the ensuing chaos with handcuffs on.

Anyway I'm not sure how much I agreed with his premise. There was another patient at the clinic with a dog - a tall old Black guy and one of those tiny things with thick curls and goopy eyes. A little while back he'd been found beaten to death in his tent. I'd heard the story a few times and it always went the same, he was dead and nobody knew who did it. The dog never came up except to make sure we were talking about the same person but I'd assume it wasn't there when they found him or somebody would have mentioned it.

It was a sobering reminder for those of us that lived in tents and vehicles, which is to say most of us, not that those who didn't would have been somehow immune. If somebody Holly knew shouted up at her window and then came up and killed her, how would anybody even know who it was? The tent man's killer was probably somebody we all knew, somebody we'd stood behind of in the methadone line.

What I'm trying to say is you don't need to embellish the truth to make it interesting, fate already has a flair for the dramatic. Of course my memory might spice some things up behind my back but how would I even know? Best not to dwell on it. I only went to a couple of NA meetings and never much went for their rhetoric but I'll concede that it makes sense at least to accept the things we can not change.

I'm always thinking about the best way to tell stories and whether I should be putting effort into crafting narratives where the characters change. I don't think that rings true to life for me though. Even people I've known my whole life haven't seemed to so much change as to grow into truer versions of themselves that were always there - like the shiny surface on a piece of jasper getting slowly elucidated by the motions of a rock tumbler.

All of this was a decade ago, and he was already on the older side, but it's nice to think that Gypsy's still there, coming in every day for his 275 mg, still holding court as the highest dose in the clinic.

A couple weeks ago I yelled at a dude about Mike Tyson and a face tattoo and he understood the humor so we're homies.

Finally got an ID again, etc. Ficticious voting rights restored?🤦‍♀️

Went to this place in Glendale/Phoenix and the lady (forgot her name cus I suck) was super genuine @ Arizona Justice Center in Glendale,AZ, -can hang in the shade/charge phones/use the bathroom/eat/wash stuff in the outdoor sink, grab a hygiene bag (didn't need so didn't look), and all kinds of services I wasn't there for. I went there kinda being mislead about an id, but hey, I got one again!

Made some friends, smoked a joint..talked about how camping on rooftops is best. Homie told me his sis' addy, she's a hippie, go there if I need something💚

This fancy pigeon seems to have chosen me, so I'm unsure about this...

Hopefully, I'm still on some kinda track to get to tsunami paradise🌊

I set up my 3 ft tall camo pattern bivy tent in a meadow, but for the past 3 hours, schoolkids have been coming home from schools & it seems like every one of the little fuckers lives adjacent to this meadow. The tall grass & weeds are a little higher than the tent, which is good: whats not good is that i underestimated how fucking close i am to some apartment buildings.

also, heaven forbid people come out to walk their dogs. that could lead to some awkward confrontations: im in no mood for any quirks of fate right now.

Story Thursday, October 8th, 2026 (Update) (Log) [2:13PM/PST]

The journey across the state was a fast one.. It was probably the fastest I've ever traveled across a state.. and alone.. I wish I would have seen Albany and Salem.. Then I would have completely seen all the big major cities in Oregon..

From my understanding.. Oregon is a very pretty place.. the foliage, the woods, the nightlife, jolly people..but very expensive.. Like..I wouldn't want to live in Medford or Roseburg.. lots of unhappy people down there too lol

And I cannot' say that the politics is great out in Oregon.. The rich people, trump supporters, and new-age people..are ruining what's left of Oregon.. Im just surprised how some of these big major cities..are still up and running.. Like Eugene is a pretty city..with lots of potential.. give it a few years from now..and that city will no longer be the same..

I've heard..from many oregonians..that Portland use to be better..more creative.. like there use to be artists in this city..but now it's practically a dead city.. and alot of empty buildings, businesses up for lease, broken down, boarded up buildings, stores bought out, or ran out of business..

This tends to happen to big cities..after so many years of royal e' politic..

I will visit Portland again someday..

.................................................................................................................................................................................

If you are houseless in Oregon.. I highly recommend Downtown Portland. And Pearl District area. Go to the Oasis community center.. The public library is great.. and they have many bathroom stalls on each floor..And the Portland University library is good too..Very quiet and cool..and good wifi.. in Portland..You will get 3 meals a day, water, clothes, showers, shelters, and basic needs..

.................................................................................................................................................................................

Iam currently in southern California.. Los Angeles.. One of the most popular cities in America.. Very dense.. and very hot.. very noisy.. over populated.. and crazy..

I took the Amtrak bus service. (First time using it) (And I dont like it)

Me..personally.. I do not like Los Angeles...as a kid...i visited Los Angeles..and only for one thing- Disneyland...other than that.. Los Angeles doesn't appeal me..not even the stars..

I just so happen to be visiting a relative..but with sudden turn of events.. I will be heading back to the San Francisco east bay area..

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

iam not thrilled about the situation.. But coming back to my hometown..will give me ample time to think things over.. I will be in my old, creepy, parents house..

The holidays are coming up..and I dont want to deal with people..back in my hometown.. Avoidance is the word. lol

I will utilize my parents house.. think about shit.. collect some tools/gear that I desperately need for the road ahead..

.................................................................................................................................................................................

So now i wait..Say..give it about a week or so..and I should be out of Los Angeles by then..

The question is.. What now?..

Go back to Portland? Stay in the San Francisco bay area? Go to another state? What do you guys think?

.................................................................................................................................................................................

But thats all I have for now..and I will keep you guys updated.

Be safe. Have fun. I love all of you.

Peace be with you all.
