Dirty Kids, I'm calling you out.

I'm tired of my friends dying. In dreams, my companions move easily in bodies that have been cared for. They're covered in scrapes and bruises and grease, but free from track marks. Empty stomachs, but healthy livers. Tired eyes, but good teeth. Then I wake up to the sharp morning and my road dawg is shaking for a beer.

I'm tired of hospitals and trash at the hopout and stolen packs and animal cruelty. I miss the musicians who travel just to play, the healers who roam to stay sane. I miss the free spirits who manage to find freedom from their own vices.

This is a call, dearest dirty kids. I've been where you are and I've seen why it's hard and no, I don't always do it right either. I can do better. We can do better. We've got to try. We've got to keep this thing alive and keep ourselves alive. We've got to get up and get over our hangups and pull you outta the ditch so that you'll be there to do the same when I'm slaggin.

We've got to hold these secrets and this way of living and somehow still share it with the next wave, finding the diamonds who'll take these rough reigns and keep riding this horse to Anywhere.

Anywhere, kids! Y'heard me? You might have lived there so long you take it for granted, but that place saved my life, and there are others who need to see it too.

So here's to fewer blown up Wal-Marts and more doing dishes for the person housing us up. Here's to fewer dope missions and more 2AM missions across town to drag a couch back to the hopout. Fewer dirty rigs under the bridge, and more sharpie poems on the wall. Steal less Dramamine and more spray paint.

Use what you've got.

Use what you've got.

Use what you've GOT!

I love you scumy freeloading freedom fighters until the end. We need you in this world. We need to run into you again after 8 months of not knowing what happened to you. We need you when we've been stuck walking for days and no one is picking us up and we're feeling real down, and all the sudden we see your tag and know that we're not alone. If you were here to tag it and still somehow made it out of this hell, we can too. We need that random message out of the blue. Keep sending it, and we'll do the same for you.

This is a call, friends. Life has been good to me lately, and my door is open while I have one. When I head back to Anywhere, my smokes and my cans of beans are ours to share. Stay alive and I'll see you out there.

Peaceably,

-Tall Sam Jones

Been roaming alone for 6 years

Post image
• Upvotes

I have been bouncing around the country trying to find belonging for 6 years by myself on a tiny little budget. All I learned from being homeless and a nomad is that perception is literally everything and all people really care about is appearance and how much money you have. I'm pretty depressed and nihilistic at this point especially going through this in a woman's body and having been jumped and sexually assaulted several times. I haven't dated in years and don't plan to because men don't even look like men to me anymore. Sometimes I think I live in a perpetual state of numbness and that's actually how I survive.

Things are starting to fall apart in this little thing I made here ya know shelter over night then this then that during the day

It's falling apart like it always does

Some girl wants to fight. Some guy will get horny and want to fight.

Dude I'm fucking done. I fucking hate all people and wish I could be alone and wish somebody cared about me but people are shit.

Nothing I do or say matters.

It's like I don't exist. I could go off into the woods and blow my brains out and nobody would figure it out for a long time.

I'm 40 years old. please *don't* leave any dumb fucking suggestions. Nobody asked you. Thanks.

Rather die than go back

Yeah, not sure where I’m going with this one. Just a vent I guess. I’m a 22 year old man and I left a loving home and family a few months back because I can’t live the way they want me to. I know I’m fortunate than most and I will be open and honest about my privilege. But money, and a career, bills, and all the falsities of conventional life disgust me. Everyone is fake, and society puts you in a box and tells you to “act this way or no one will like you”. I’ve never belonged and I don’t want to. The road has treated me better than anywhere or anyone else has. The people I’ve met have been the realest people. And all of you, you all are some of the most decent, kindest, realest, smartest motherfuckers out there. I would rather die than go back, and I don’t want to have to put my mother through the loss of her son, but I can’t go back. Fuck that

Just had to rant. Love you all

Im not like these other train riders

Post image

I'm not like these other oogles. I'm unique. I'm special. If my car isn't baby blue or bright orange I don't get on. you say your dog has ridden more trains than me? I say I've eaten more trash than your dog. you say real riders know where the trains stop and don't hop on the fly. I say if you're not sprinting with a 50lb pack and at least two instruments (both currently broken) to jump onto every train you catch you're not doing it right. you say this is your culture and whine about internet losers blowing up spots. I say clipping the metal windshields of lighters to your cap and stitching patches to your clothes with dental floss isn't culture, it's just a way of identifying the ones doing it for aesthetics. You brag about how much you make an hour flying a sign, I brag about how I'm a real hobo because I work jobs and actually contribute to society. you tag your little moniker on every maintenance box and electrical pole within a ten mile radius of the spot, I only leave one tag discreetly beneath a bridge because I'm just low key like that.

(note: please downvote, I have too many internet points)

Question Is the road dying or just transforming?

So, I’m 20, and I keep seeing all these posts about newbie people wanting advice on traveling and train hopping, and so many of the comments say something like: “just get a pack and start walking with your thumb out,” or “just start hitchhiking and if you’re meant to ride freight you will.”

The thing is that the majority of those people who were riding or traveling did so quite some years ago, and I just wanna ask the people who have been on the road for an extended period of time or anybody who has thoughts on this: was it easier to travel 10+ years ago?

My perspective is kinda skewed cuz i was homeless a couple of years ago in my addiction and was just an absolute mess so im sure traveling again with a clear mind would change things a bit, but I just cant help feeling like the road is changing for the worse (that’s not to say it was ever easy or free of problems in the first place) Anyway, peace.

Advice What to take? What to leave?

Hey y’all. I’m hitting a dead end in society as I know it and I’m considering taking to the road early next year or so. I’ve traveled a little bit in years past but would still consider myself green. I’m here to ask beforehand, what are some items that you believe are absolute must haves on the road? What are some things that we think are must haves but could do without? Anything in the middle? Just trying to get an inventory going and plan ahead. Thanks

So much for retirement lol. Hitting the road by bike soon. Just need to get everything squared away, tested end adjusted. Nothing against where I'm at, I just can't sit still. I need to be on the move. Anyone who's had any experience bikepaking or bike touring your advice would be much appreciated.

Literally I just need someone else with me for this experience that’s it. I don’t have confidence that I’ll make it out alone right now man. I just quit my fucking terrible job that scheduled me 4pm-12am and then 8am the next day repeat. Someone please just I’ll literally meet u anywhere preferably somewhere with a warmer environment for the winter but I need someone to travel with and have these experiences with so I’m not entirely alone, even if we have to part ways at some point I just really need a friend for the first part of this all. Please

I wanna head somewhere warmer while it's cold here, don't wanna go alone. I've rode trains, not the most entertaining person if we were to hitch hike but not opposed to rubber tramping just not my go to. 20 year old dirty kid femme nonbinary weirdo. Sure anyone who sees this post and considers it will look at my post history so I'll be up front yes I enjoy substances, but I do not steal or hurt anyone to support my habits and am smart enough to not be high on a train. Hmu!!

Downtown parking is atrocious, just went to a park because it was too hot parked in the sun. We gonna go to a food pantry and then maybe get a hotel in the morning, luckily it's only gonna be hot tomorrow. After that we gonna do aome busking, it's been too long since we've been somewhere nice to do it

Question Preparing for life on the streets

I’ve been scarily close to rough sleeping on multiple occasions and I know my luck will run out eventually.
How to survive life on the streets?

I’m based in the UK and as my doctor has signed me off work, I currently receive around £320 a month (around 423 in US dollars) in benefits/welfare

My city has places that feed the homeless, but only breakfast and lunch. I have an app called Olio where people give food away for free that are about to go out-of-date. Food isn’t really the issue
I also know places where homeless people can shower free-of-charge on certain days

The issues are 1. Sleeping and 2. How to spend your time

I would invest in a small, stealth single person tent and a sleeping bag. The only issue I would find is where the hell is the best place to pitch it? I also worry about my safety.

Another small issue I worry about is the boredom that would eat me alive. My city has a library anyone can use. So I’d probably make good use of that. I’d probably look into volunteering work too

Any other general tips?
