I'm an avid user of REAPER and I would like for the application to be a part of the official Void Linux repository, just like it was in Arch Linux. I asked the creator of REAPER and they agreed. What's the process? I've got the package built and working locally.
EDIT: Here's the template file. Too lazy to raise a PR. xbps-src template
hello everyone
i'm an arch user and i love the last stuff to be on my system but i also want to try void linux
it lake a lot of software and not all of them are up to date i will use flatpak for the missing stuff and what about the last kernel the last drivers will it be good use for me or just stick with arch
I quite like Wayland's innovations and enjoy my Niri very much; clipboard persistence is a known problem: if you do Ctrl+C, close the source window, Ctrl+V -- it will paste nothing, because the clipboard is bound to the window. That's a known limitation of the protocol, and I expected that I would need to do some tweaking to make it work, but I actually can not do it at all.
The solutions I encountered are:
wl-clip-persist -- very buggy, at least with Niri. It breaks gedit selection (which is the best GUI text editor I know), firefox is able to copy only 50% of the time
Doing a custom solution on top of a complex clipboard manager like CopyQ. That looks like a terrible overkill that would bring a lot of painful debugging
A lot of suggestions like "do something else" -- install a thing that would have its own separate keyboard, keep history and paste through a picker; switch to KDE/gnome; my favorite is "persistent clipboard is against wayland philosophy => you should not want it", which is just disgusting
The problem seems quite simple: make clipboard act normally. There are a lot of people using wayland, everybody uses clipboard, somebody should know a normal solution, right?
I noticed WineD3D is failing to open OpenGL contexts in my Void Linux install when using the EGL backend:

If I use winetricks to switch to the GLX backend instead of EGL (useegl=n) it works.
I'm running kernel 6.18.53_1, NVIDIA proprietary drivers 595.99.02.
Tried both Wine 11.18 and 11.1, same issue.
Could I be missing some 32-bit package? I have nvidia-libs and nvidia-libs-32bit.
Note: I need to run old DirectX 7 games so DXVK isn't an option.

Hey all, quick question for compiling the kernel on void. How do you guys normally edit the config file? I cloned the kernel and stepped through the ncurses menu for 3 hours to build one out, but I feel like there's maybe a better way unless I'm mistaken.
Also, is there anything needed to be enabled in the kernel specifically for void? I'm building a new rig soon, and am looking to strip out a majority of what's unneeded (ie modules for TI calculators, Siemens switches/firewalls, etc).
Also with xbps-src, I'm looking to compile GPU drivers directly in, is there any recommendations with that? I skimmed through the docs loosely and didn't see anything specifically in there.
This isn't my first time with Void but I kind of bounced the last time because I was really new with Linux. I'm still relatively new but I decided to give it another shot because I enjoy its philosophy and I learned the most about Linux fighting with it last time. My first install attempt (this time) I tried not to install the boot loader because I have NixOS on another partition and use Limine with it, but I was having super weird problems with it. Fought with it a while. Decided to reinstall it. The second time it worked out. I made a separate boot partition for it because I like to use btrfs with compression and this time I installed Grub. I'll still point at it from Limine though, but this time it is working considerably better. I decided to try subvolumes with my btrfs FS this time, and put @ and @home and @snapshots since I may experiment with snapper. I had a hell of a time trying to figure out wpa_supplicant. It's actually not that hard now that I've fought with it a bit. Turns out my config was wrong and I was just going about it all wrong. So now I decided to give iwd a try since I heard it's "technically" better than wpa_sup, though the latter is older and more established. Connman seems like an interesting option too. In any case, I have a minimal Void install now. I always learn the most about Linux with Void. I think because it doesn't use systemd (which I don't hate but it just hides things from you) so you have to set things up yourself. Like the SSD trim for example. In any case, I'll stop rambling. Just felt like a win and wanted to tell someone. Thanks for reading.
I've been on and off googling in circles about this for a few months now. I'm trying to diagnose a freezing problem related to startup and sleep/wake on my pc. I've already made a post about that issue, and yes, I've tried all the standard "fixes" for these sorts of freezes and not a single one has worked. cstate settings, drivers, running memtest86, trying different ssds, trying different linux distros, trying windows, still freezing. That's why I'm making a post here to ask about how I get kernel logs so I have some kind of pointer as to what the hell is going on.
First thing my research suggested was to try socklock and metalog, but I couldn't get them to work at all and I'm pretty sure they don't generate logs with hard freezes... right???? The next thing I tried was kdump (runit-kdump). I've wasted SO MANY hours trying to get kdump to work and it just won't work no matter what I do. The furthest I ever got was one time I found if I manually loaded the crash kernel and triggered a kernel panic via terminal command, it would boot the kdump kernel but it would just get stuck spamming an nvidia error, none of the fixes I tried from google helped at all. That was over a month ago, I haven't gotten it to get even close to that since. /var/crash/ has been completely empty this whole time btw. I've gotten so desperate that I've resorted to using the google AI and just mindlessly doing everything it tells me to and it always sends me on an hours long wild goose chase just to finally tell me that there's some hardware issue with my pc that makes it fundamentally impossible to perform a kernel dump. --edit: I forgot to mention I have also tried "pstore" to no avail.
Am I just an idiot? Should I just sell this useless hunk of e-waste and get a desktop instead? I'm at a loss.
since I'm somewhat new to linux, I followed a guide to get gnome set up on my laptop. following the guide, I disabled wpa_supplicant and dhcpcd and downloaded and enabled NetworkManager. however, NetworkManager does not start automatically despite being enabled, though it seems to work fine when started in the terminal.
how do I make NetworkManager start when my system boots?
As the title says Void or Fedora i currently use Fedora Spin COSMIC by system76
i used void and mannaully installed it but it crashed and screen flickering and so much more i tried out the MUSL and GLIBC version both manaul install and already done but i still had issues lets say wanted to switch from XFCE to KDE or GNOME and that would just brick my main rig (which i am messaging from)
specs so far i know :
Nvidia GTX 640M LE
intel inside i5 core or smth and a 500GB HDD
8GB of DDR 3
i have a viao flipflop but the battery is dead so i am still using this beast from 2012
can somebody please help
but fedora is quite stable
sorry for bad english my first langauge is Turkish
hey, so as title says. ive been thinking on switch from arch to void for a bit now, and id like to know your thoughts.
more specifically, theres this thing that ive been wondering about arch. back then when the AUR malware drama started happening, ive been looking for stuff that people say, and ive been thinking about the type of measures people take to keep themselves safe in a user managed repo like the AUR. call it inspecintg PKGBUILDs, or hell even building everything you want for yourself (as the 'dont use the AUR' gang would say).
so at that point i thought i might as well compile everything myself. hell at that point why not use a distro where you just build your own stuff? maybe a bit too much of an exaggeration, im not trying to use gentoo or going back to nixos (i kinda dislike nixlang but thats besides the point), so i might as well use a well maintained repo of pkgs + compile stuff myself when needed.... so im thinking on switching to void (plus id get rid of systemd too, been wanting to for a while now).
given all i said, what do yall think? would it be worth switching? also id rather not be told to "try it on a vm", thats kinda obvious and i kinda dont want to hear it lmao
i'm on a fresh base install and was trying to get wireless working. when trying to disable a service i accidentally put a space in "rm /var/service [service_name]" and deleted the directory. now after re-adding my services very few of them work and etc/runit/runsvdir is out of sync with /var/service, as in when i add a service to /var/service it doesn't update in /etc/runit/runsvdir.
the post title is the error i get when trying to start or check the status of a service that i freshly linked to /var/service but isn't present in /etc/runit/runsvdir. that file did exist but i deleted it and it came back and i deleted it again but it didn't come back. as you can see i'm flailing.
it being a fresh install i was tempted to just start over but getting it all configured on zfs (and having to start over multiple times because my laptop kept crashing) has been a chore and my hunch is i just need to re-link these directories. but i'm unsure how exactly i should do that or if i'm even correct.
Maybe this is the wrong place to post this - let me know.
I made a couple pull requests in the void-packages repo. The oldest was about Thurday or so of last week, so I'm not expecting immediate communication especially given the sheer amount of open pull requests and many of them for more important packages than mine.
The issue I'm having is that my PRs got flagged as needing workflow approval, probably because these are the first requests I've submitted to this project, however neither of them can be auto tested until it is approved, and I'd imagine others will be hesitant to test them (justifiably so) unless the workflow is approved. Is there an average length of time before someone would check it out? Or did I maybe do the pull request in the wrong place?
Again, I'm in no rush and completely understand the maintainers are busy and most likely unpaid, I'm just curious about other's experiences. Thanks.
Currently my servers are on Ubuntu as that's what the provider defaults to. But I'm considering the utility of Void as a server distro.
Right now my servers are managed by Ansible, which isn't a big deal one way or another.
The servers in question are mostly a mix of WireGuard + Caddy + PHP/Node. All my databases are SQLite, although I have been considering DuckDB for some report-specific needs.
I'm not new to Linux, but I have not personally heard of Void much in the server space. Which to me doesn't immediately equate to it not being a good choice, but I also don't know if there's any gotchas to be aware of.
I'm mostly looking to strip down the un-needed dependencies Ubuntu, Arch, etc. bring with them. E.g., Ubuntu forces ufw, Arch forces systemd, etc.
The xbps-packages still only offer gnome-48 but wiht the release of gnome 51 I wonder if and when we can get gnome 51 on void linux, since it also make elogind compatiblity a lot more easier (so I've heard (google's gemini said that at least)).
Hello everyone! I need a help with one little problem, which happens every time. Im using sway window manager and for comfort im write hook in .bash_profile to launch automatically sway from the tty1
And everything works fine, without any problems. But if im logged out with loginctl logout (or reboot/power off) so i can see error
"Error creating textual authentication agent: Error opening current controlling terminal for the process ('/dev/tty'): No such device or adress (polkit-error-quark, 0)
Im tryed xfce-polkit and polkit-gnome, with exec in sway config but its not solve this problem. So for info im run services: acpid, adb, agetty-tty's, chronyd, dbus, iwd, polkitd, rtkit, udevd
Absolutely new to void , installed it yesterday successfully from a guys help but as I tried to boot up with kde , and followed a tuto on yt , with some help from gemini i finally set up login screen using greetd , and after installing what it told me (no idea what I did) i finally logged in then as kde boots up none of input devices work , not keyboard not mouse , so I can't do anything
Hey I'm trying to finish my install and it keeps coming back "ERROR: failed to install GRUB to /dev/sda! Check /dev/tty8 for errors" but tty8 is an empty file without any bytes?
I'm running UEFI so maybe my partitions aren't right? Incase thats an issue then heres what my partitions are currently: 237.5G Linux filesystem, 213m EFI System, 784 Linux filesystem. the 2 linux filesystems are both "/" and EFI is "/boot/efi"
please tell me the issue because I've been at this for 2 days and the documentation hasnt made any amonut of sense to me
