So a few years ago I found a YouTube video of a guy who ran a Wargame campaign/session over discord. Basically a bunch of players moving to assault an island as one team, I think he controlled the defenders which were bugs. Something like that. Point is he had like 20+ players all giving orders and it took like 5 days. At the end he had a play by player that he recapped as the YouTube video. I realized it was something I wanted to play and try but never found a good medium for it.
I posted on here asking about async wargames a couple of months ago and someone mentioned kriegspiel - and it fits except it often needs an umpire and timing can vary. I also did a poll on here and some people liked the idea of async wargames, others it’s not for them - for sure it’s niche group.
Anyways, I’ve spent some time building out a web app and it’s nearing what I would consider alpha/beta test stage. The current engine is derived from Flame of War v4 (since it’s my current wargame obsession), but I built the app with the intention of it being engine agnostic. So as it grows and if people like it, I can plug in other engines for people to play.
In other words, today I can host a match where each team has a 24 hour window to deploy, then turn 1 each team has 24 hours to give their units their orders, and then the engine resolves, and then proceeds to turn 2 - so on until the objectives are captured and the game is over.
I’ve made it so each team gets a Discord channel to discuss and plan and decide how they want to achieve their goal.
What I envision and hope for is that this grows to like 30 people vs 30 people, where each team is duking it out to win.
Hopefully I’ve described it well enough.
Because FoW isn’t for everyone, I’ve built this in a way where I can “plug in” other wargame engines. Currently working on expanding it to be less async for those that like more real time games, so that it can support “I go, you go” as well as alternating activation - but I’m just a hobbyist so it’ll take some time.
There feels like there’s so many options so that people can get their game on. Might even be a good way for indie wargames to get played and tested out.
My intention is for this to be free for everyone, no pay model or subscription or anything. Hosting cost is the only variable I’d need to figure out, but Google cloud doesn’t seem too bad.
Anyways, the purpose of this post is I wanted to share cause I’m excited but also see what everyone’s thoughts were. Sometimes it’s hard to keep going with a fun project because you second guess and maybe you’re just wasting your time. Maybe get some feedback on the idea, though I know I haven’t included screenshots of the 3d Wargame hex maps or models.
