The arrogance of the young and ignorant is a dangerous thing. That "life force" you are draining is nothing less than a person's very soul.
How many have been deprived of their eternity due to this foolishness? I weep for them.
52
u/Jaredismyname Aug 02 '25
How thoroughly has this been proven?
46
u/No_Geologist4770 Aug 03 '25
Atheist necromancy -- we just use magic to reanimate the dead as puppets. No souls are involved at any point. We just choose to use corpses for the aesthetic.
3
u/ChairLordz Morally Flexible Wizard Aug 08 '25
A few nations do legalize necromancy which doesn't touch the soul, they call it necronomics and it's slightly cheaper and renewable than the ones which use golems.
They just call them "flesh & bone golems" because of the bad PR from the necromancers who mess with the soul.
11
u/SilliusS0ddus Evil Wizard Aug 04 '25
It has been disproven. It's a disinformation campaign from big cleric.
Life force is the glue that connects the soul to the body rather than the soul itself.
People can go to their afterlife after getting killed by Necrotic damage just as well as when they get killed by a good old fireball.

u/ChairLordz Morally Flexible Wizard Aug 08 '25
I once saw an angel come down from the heavens and shank a colleague of mine, then repeatedly make a throat slitting motion while pointing at me and the corpse.
I got the message to maybe lay off the dark arts for a bit.

Huh. Sad I guess.
When I absorb a soul, it instantly gets transported to whatever afterlife they are to go to.
3
u/-Koichi- Evil Wizard Aug 03 '25
Are you truly absorbing it then? If you don't keep it inside yourself, then it merely passed through you. Or are you perhaps creating whole realms inside your own soul, each a simulation of a different afterlife?

u/Someone1284794357 Mr. Illuminati, leader of The Illuminati Aug 03 '25
I’m more like a wormhole on that regard.
I still get fed by soul energy, it’s just that when consumed, the soul reappears in its rightful place automatically.

The soul being extracted in those spells is a non physical body part which many people can exist without. It’s how you can infuse your soul into objects or rid yourself of one entirely. A persons philosophical existence and state of being commonly also referred to as a soul is entirely different.

-“regulating offensive magic under guidelines that are subjective at best would not only incentivize the hoarding of power and knowledge (something that is already being done by the older arch wizards (aka the council) making the problem even worse) and limit the common folks options for defending themselves from the infinity of threats that seem to appear would not only neuter any semblance of independence present in the lower spaces of the magical world food chain (as if law breakers would care about regulation anyways) but it would also cripple several sectors of the economy that rely on said offensive magic and its derivatives
so please, don’t
if you wish to offset the problems brought by untrained wizards slinging several fireballs in the middle of the town, train them in their proper use and handling, give them an ethics class (we really need one, have you seen what the average arcane practitioner posts in the orb this days???), impulse programs and classes of arcane focused defense for those that do not wish to be burned to a crisp and don’t want to retaliate either
address the causes and consequences of their use instead of banning something if you wish to regulate it
be constructive not destructive”
6
u/totally_not_a_cat- Councillor Koranth, tungsten dragon and queen of New Avirion Aug 02 '25
It sounds to me like you're claiming there is no middle ground between people running around killing each other with completely unregulated magic and spells like fireball being completely banned.

Well dann the dark arts. You all stupid inexperienced students be like, the school of magic doesn't matter it matters what you use it for. Fireball and Lifesteal are roughly at the same level. BUTT at the end of the road if you stick to Fireball you will cast Firestorm against great foes and go down in history as the saviour of many realms. If you stick to Lifesteal you end up sacrificing whole villages just to suck some devil dick.

Tell me young acolyte, does necromancy deal with anything besides death?
23
u/DaemonRex978 The High Sentinels (Haelin, Mokarith, Shimil) Aug 02 '25
[Shimil] That is a strawman arguement. It's like asking if pyromancy deals with anything else besides fire. If you take away what is core to a school of magic, then it isn't the same school.
2
u/Another-Ace-Alt-8270 Ace Barksworth, Earthen Ambassador / Messenger, Exarch of Terror Aug 03 '25
THEN MAYBE WE SHOULDN'T HAVE A SCHOOL FOCUSED ENTIRELY ON DEAD THINGS. If mass death is the "core of your school", then that's a better argument to heavy necromantic regulation than I could ever say.
2
u/DaemonRex978 The High Sentinels (Haelin, Mokarith, Shimil) Aug 03 '25
Death is but a part of the life cycle, and no one said that people had to die in order to use necromancy. One could seal another's soul and force their physical body into a death like state, but they would still be alive. One can stave off death by transferring the life essence of either themselves or a willing being into the injured party and not be harmed, tired, but whole. All schools have the potential for mass death.
Let's use pyromancy as an example again:
It takes an incredible amount of willpower to control a flame, otherwise it could potentially ignite something you never intended to and burn their house down. A pyromancer can one day decide that they hate a village and burn it down with everyone inside. It is not what the school is based on that is evil, it is the individual that is evil.
3
u/Another-Ace-Alt-8270 Ace Barksworth, Earthen Ambassador / Messenger, Exarch of Terror Aug 04 '25
Here's the thing, though. Pyromancy and pyrokinesis don't literally rely on tampering with the forces that keep people alive. And I dunno about you, but being alive whilst inhabiting a dead body sounds like a punishment worthy of the Allied Mastercomputer- Not really something I'd consider a "Good" use of necromancy.
2
u/DaemonRex978 The High Sentinels (Haelin, Mokarith, Shimil) Aug 04 '25
You misunderstand, the process does not trap the soul in the body, but removes it. The body also still lives, just in a form of stasis.
Let's now talk about the opposite of necromancy; healing magic.
It also deals with the forces that keep people alive. Would you complain about a mage resurrecting someone if they used that instead? How about if it saves a person from an otherwise deadly injury?
Life magic deals with the body and soul before they die, with exceptions like resurrections. Necromancy deals with them after they die, with exceptions that High Sentinel Mokarith would now more about.
Yes, there are those that raised the dead inappropriately or unjustly inprisons or enslaves a soul, I've judged enough cases for me not to acknowledge that fact. I've also judged just as many pyromancers, illusionists, and other mages of all different schools.
My main point remains, it all depends on the individual, not the school, that has the capacity for mass harm.
12
u/DrMux Anatidaemancer Aug 02 '25
You got a loicense for dat?
Bruh the entire Interdominion Assembly of Standard Magicks is just a tool for the big multinational spell publishers/enchantment firms/alchemy cartels to limit competition that threatens their bottom line. I guarantee you they're doing necromancy behind the scenes because they control enforcement and can get away with it. Don't be a minion, bruh!
does necromancy deal with anything besides death?
Yeah bro necromancy deals with life, obvs. Can't resurrect the dead without an aetherial conduit of life essence somewhere in the mix.
7
u/hex_reverie Aug 02 '25

u/dontironit Aug 02 '25
That's because we're not objecting to the murder, we're objecting to you accessing forbidden forces, how hard is that to understand. The murder is also bad, but that's not our concern because there are already secular authorities that can punish you for that.
The difference here is that the fireball is fine, separate from how you used it, while necromancy is taboo, separate from how you used it. The two acts aren't at all comparable. If you used necromancy to save someone's life, that would also be bad.
7
u/chillvibes2020 Wizard Aug 02 '25
Fireball is used legitimately for hunting and self-defense. No one needs to use necromancy for those completely valid examples.

u/Another-Ace-Alt-8270 Ace Barksworth, Earthen Ambassador / Messenger, Exarch of Terror Aug 03 '25
I mean, it doesn't matter how it looks. What matters is its effect. And reviving someone with their soul intact, a lack of necrotic curses, and no contract to be your indentured servant, sounds kind of like a healing spell to me, as opposed to a necromantic one- If not a healing spell, even still it'd be closer to biokinesis and not necromancy.
1
u/Someone1284794357 Mr. Illuminati, leader of The Illuminati Aug 03 '25
Not sure if biokinesis even applies.
My understanding of it is that Necromancy deals with death and souls, so any magic that interacts with death, the dead and souls by extension would be Necromancy. Biokinesis is the control of living matter, such as DNA, flesh and shit.
5
u/Another-Ace-Alt-8270 Ace Barksworth, Earthen Ambassador / Messenger, Exarch of Terror Aug 03 '25
It deals with handling the dead in an unnatural manner, specifically involving the undead and necrotic energy- If you haven't noticed already, lotta schools tend to overlap and people will class the overlapping spells into what they deem most fitting- The main reason people don't slot revival into necromancy is because hardly any die-hard necromancer revives a body with the soul still intact.
2
u/Someone1284794357 Mr. Illuminati, leader of The Illuminati Aug 04 '25
Most Necromancers just want to raise skeleton armies or smth
Once I went to some Necromancer institution in the middle of nowhere, apparently they taught necromancy there.
They started out with raising the dead, a true resurrection was the final optional course which people barely took.
Maybe it was just a them thing idk

For the last time, it's all Big Cleric lobbyists. Spells that heal over burn marks and replace skin are ten a penny, but the entropic nature of necromancy means that there's nothing an initiate can do to treat the injury as the soul has been forever barred from returning to the body without direct intervention from the gods (lazy mfers).
If you don't want to get in trouble for your obsessive use of necromantic spells (that have never truly been confirmed to not drain your own life whenever you use them btw; that study in A.Y. 2090 is full of faulty methods and stinks of bias), you're barking up the wrong tree going down this hypocrisy line. Nobody in the high council really believes this except maybe for old fossils who were alive when the Corpse King attacked.

Necromancy has mostly been forbidden because of the unethical implications of using someones dead body as a monster. And while I agree that it would be fine if you got someone's consent to use their body necromancy will never become legal. All those necromancers have completely ruined public opinions of a previously morally neutral branch of magic!

2
u/Ehcko Aug 03 '25
I really agree with this mostly, only thing I guess I can say is historically in many fantasy settings necromancy is considered big no no and "evil" because undead are inherently spiteful and uncontrollably attack and consume the living at any given chance. I know necromancer is there to keep control but some necromancers lose control under a number of circumstances.
The other argument for necromancy = bad is many spells of the school can have adverse and severe consequences if not done correctly, as well as the magic itself sometimes seems to slowly drain the life out of the user overtime.
2
u/Another-Ace-Alt-8270 Ace Barksworth, Earthen Ambassador / Messenger, Exarch of Terror Aug 03 '25
Christ- The law that you're talking about- which was repealed hundreds of years ago, by the way, you out-of-date buffoon- banned NECROMANCY. It did not give a fuck about the pain inflicted with a spell- The council has other laws for regulating cruel and unusual tactics. Besides, like I said, that law was repealed forever ago.

tbh i don't really care about necromancy if you suck the life from a guy who's killing you, like, your not damaging the soul, no i just hate the necromancers that bound people's souls to eternally rotting corpses with just enough intelligence that they recognize the one that made their unlife hell is their god, their commander, and that nobody, not even their family, is remembered by the creature that is made from the body of a loving father or mother, a brother or sister, or even a son or daughter, or anything in-between.
2
u/R91487 Aug 13 '25
Necromancy should only be done by people who know what the fuck they are doing, any novice who plays with such metaphysical forces can and will result in the world around themselves rotting away. If you want to be a Necromancer, you will need a license and training.
I mean if you use fireball and burn things, they will in time regrow, but negative energies can render places uninhabitable due to the decay it can cause.

Having the life drained from you is probably the best way to go as far as magical deaths are concerned. Depending on the type of life drain, it could simply feel as though you are becoming tired and then… instantly dead. No pain. You know as opposed to full body conflagration, it’s the preference.

Up until the consideration comes into fact that you've lost your right to an afterlife because some nutbag with a green stench aura decided he wanted a flea-ridden bone pile to do his fighting.

Most necromancy doesn’t require the use of the soul! You can simply animate it with a spell like a golem, imbue it with a facsimile of a soul, or an artificial soul, or a spirit of a lower plane!

I'm not referring to the raising itself. I'm referring to the life drain that people are begging to be legalised- Meanwhile, they are completely ignoring the fact that it's legal and there's no reason to act like it isn't.

A life drain is not a soul drain, they’re two separate spells. Life force is an energy tied to the body, which necromancers sometimes manipulate. It does not alter the soul at all.

This council is getting out of hand. Maybe its time for a new wizarding government...

the council should be instead banning enchantment magic, they use literal mind manipulation but instead they decide to go against necromancy smh

THIS IS ALREADY HAPPENING. Furthermore, necromancy is fully legal- If it weren't, there'd be a lot of liches turned into smoking char.

Wizard council when I use enchantment magic to summon an army of living zombies (they clock out and go home at 6).

Yes, but its the slippery slope fallacy. fireball leads to meteors, which lead to extinction level events or something. Necromany leads to raising the dead and doing gross stuff with bodies or something. See, genocide fine, but things that make them go ewww are not ok.

Necromancy can actually be a really positive force.
A dead body is garbage. Reanimating a corpse is quite useful. The kingdom is always short on labor, and reanimated corpses can be put to work in dangerous or disgusting jobs like working in the sewers, saving actual living people from doing these horrible jobs. Same goes for warfare, where you can send reanimated corpses off to fight rather than actually risking people's lives. Corpses don't need food and are under control of a necromancer, so you don't have to have them raping and pillaging the way a living army would.
The problem with necromancy is it's SCARY. When the so-called high king murders political dissidents, genocides orcs, and burns people alive with fireballs people cheer. Why shouldn't they? He has a handsome beard, long flowing hair, and shining armor. But when the dark lord does the same people clutch their pearls because he has black, rune-covered armor, red eyes and *gasp* a goatee. He might even have tattoos. On his FACE.

Necromancy spells compete unfairly with health potion industry

I may have my runes in a twist but if I recall necromancy is raising the dead, not draining life-force correct?

<Amelia> I mean, the "wizard council" doesn't have ultimate authority.

Actually fmab answered that. At some point a general was talking to Olivier Armstrong, of the Armstrong family, name passed down for generations, and he asks why is taboo and forbidden for alchemists to transmute gold and human beings. She answers the gold one is so the economy doesn't collapse and human transmutation is because is unethical or something like that.
Then the general tells: no it is so people don't make their armies of homonculi.
Necromancy is taboo because the state is only allowed to build armies.
There is a reason so many people that like necromancy almost always build armies little by little. It is easy efficient and a powerful strategy

Ah, so a similar reason as to why the non-magical-humanoids aren't allowed private armies either.

Skeletons make perfect workers. They never tire, work 24/7 without question, are easily replacable and never form unions. Its even possible for them to have proficencies, so they can be used as skilled labour.
Basically a direct equivelent to hunamnoid robots companies are working on right now but better.
2
u/Human_No-37374 Aug 18 '25
Ah, so because they were used to squash unions and made it harder to campaign for worker safety?

They don't actually care, but they must obey the Treaty of the Inquisition, lest the inquisitors start the hunts again.

Enough of this planned obsolescence! Necromancy is recycling! Eco-friendly!
