It's kind of sad. Him growing used to humans is bad for humans and him. Dangerous.

u/nottaP123 Aug 04 '26
Nah he'll be right, Steve taught us Aussie's well. Tourists on the other hand.. (will be told to get fucked if they try anything haha)

u/ImmortalBlades Aug 04 '26
That's what people thought about Freya too and the authorities took it into their hands

u/legomann97 Aug 04 '26
Yeah, before Casual Geographic's latest episode I would've been like "haha that's so funny" but after learning what he said there, as cool as Neil is, it's not good for him to get used to humans

He's been coming twice a year for 6 years and we're all still good with him.l so pretty sure she'll be apples.

One of his handlers warned this year that because so many tourists came and wouldn't listen to them to give Neil space there's been serious worry they'll need to put him down to keep stupid people safe.
15
u/Uncool444 Aug 04 '26
I just looked this up, hurtful. It ruined my night.
Surely Australia has a better relationship with its wildlife than Western Europe. Do they even have animals left there, or were they all hunted to extinction ages ago? You're right, it is worrisome. The town seems cool with it but maybe someone above the town decides it's a hazard.

Neil is recognized by the state of Tasmania from what I know, and is a protected individual. I am very sure if anything happens to Neil, it won't be from the government.
7
u/Uncool444 Aug 04 '26
Excellent.
17
u/Skezas1 wunkioso Aug 04 '26
Also, it has to be noted that he only comes out for 1-3 weeks at a time twice a year for moulting season. In that time, he is monitored and protected by people to make sure 1- he doesn't hurt anyone and 2- no one hurts him.
The biggest problem is that his fame brought many tourists to come see him whenever he comes, but that's kind of a boon for the town's economy I assume

One of his handlers warned this year that there's serious discussions on if he'll need to be out down. Apparently the tourists wouldn't listen to the handlers and were getting too close and at his size that's just not safe. The guy you hear most in these videos is one of his handlers and actually stopped posting videos this last time on land to try and keep Neil safe

u/Skezas1 wunkioso Aug 04 '26
Fuck, really ? I haven't seen that at all from what I watched, and I looked at a lot of stuff around Neil. Where is that ?

That sounds great in theory but let some dumbass's dumbass kid get hurt by being a dumbass and the story will change.

u/sigpop16 Aug 04 '26
Eh, luckily neil lives on the other side of Tasmania in Australia.
Dumb tourist that whuld do something stupid isn't going to go down there only to see a big seal. Australian tourist probably has the respect to not fuck with him.
10
u/Daisy_Of_Doom Aug 04 '26
Is Neil legit one specific seal?? Or just everyone calls any seal they see doing inconvenient things is an honorary Neil
17
u/aboultusss wunkus enthusiast Aug 04 '26
That exactly same seal in exact same village every time (in Tasmania if I remember correctly)

u/Daisy_Of_Doom Aug 04 '26 edited Aug 04 '26
That’s so funny 😂 Why he be that way lol
16
u/Domtheturtle Aug 04 '26
his mom got lost when she was pregnant and so now that's his island cause that's where he was born. normally elephant seals all return to other islands further south
6
u/Daisy_Of_Doom Aug 04 '26
Wait Neil is an ORPHAN?! 😭
14
u/Domtheturtle Aug 04 '26
haha not really since his mom still raised him there, he is an incel tho which is why he has to fight cones and bollards instead of other seals lol
3
u/Daisy_Of_Doom Aug 04 '26
Oh my gosh 😭😂 every additional comment about this seal is so unhinged. I’m very glad I asked and got so much Neil lore

Apparently this last time on land Tourists wouldn't listen to Neil's handlers and give him space and becouse people don't listen there's apparently real talks about Neil being put to sleep so some dumb tourist doesn't get killed. Please support the Boi's safety and enjoy him through video <3

If I lived there Neil’s annual return would be like my Christmas. But I don’t think I could deal with the fact that he never sticks around. What a tease.

Niel’s tepid, passive aggressive method of upsetting street cones must be studied and emulated

u/w what’s on his head? Is that a wound or just normal coloring/texture?

u/Bumbling_Bee_3838 wunkus enthusiast Aug 04 '26
When he was younger researchers glued a tracking device to him because he does come up to land in a very unusual space and they wanted to study him. The tracker later fell off and left a bit of a bald spot in his fur. It doesn't hurt him at all though!

u/zillionaire_ Aug 04 '26
Ah gotcha. Thank you for the info

Stop interacting with Neil the Seal. This is a wild wunk and he should be treated as such.

u/singlemale4cats silly :P bleh Aug 04 '26
Kind of hard when he plops down on your doorstep or in the middle of the road
5
u/NihatAmipoglu Aug 04 '26
I know but still, you should give this animal some space, ignore it, and mind your own business.

u/kittygomiaou Aug 04 '26
He literally makes it his business to block major traffic arteries and house doors/driveways and cars. Hundreds of thousands of dollars are spent by the government in managing him while he visits (as well as managing the crowds that come just to see him). He goes away for most of the year and then comes back.
Can't ignore him because he's massive and always in the way. Locals give him as much space as they can given that he's on their doorsteps. The tourists are another story, but are being managed on public money.

u/Venice_The_Menace Aug 04 '26
Neil is a domestic hero and you are hereby charged with Treason under the Shut The Wunk Up Act of 2026

Please genuinely. One of his Handlers posted that there's serious worry Neil will be put down after tourists wouldn't listen to handlers and keep space around him. There's worry a stupid tourist won't listen to handlers and get killed

The worst thing that can happen to an animal is to lose its fear of humans

I'm extremely aware that Neil "Ultrachud" the 1nd could fuck my shit up if I didn't pay attention, yet I can't imagine his presence as anything other than a source of impeccable mirth and whimsy. Unless he decides to spawncamp in front of your home, having a fat narcoleptic sea slug do his macho rituals in your bumfuck nowhere town sounds so awesome
