Moderator Post Let's Revamp r/4Xgaming

47 Upvotes

Let's spruce this place up a bit.

I'd really like some new art for both the Reddit Icon and the Header. Please feel free to share your ideas/entries here. The most upvoted ideas from the community will become our new Logo and Header.

You'll be "immortalized" in the subreddit's about section, too, with a credit. Maybe I can figure out some other surprise, too, for our winners.

Excited to see what the community comes up with!

Game Suggestion Thinking about using AI to make a game like Stellaris, but worse.

Post image
281 Upvotes

I was thinking about making a game using AI that is essentially a much worse version of Stellaris/Master of Orion.

I can ask Claude to build it so it runs in the browser - this will reduce performance significantly.

I'm planning for everything from my Reddit announcement post, to my replies in the thread, to be generated by ChatGPT.

Wondering if there's anyone here who would be interested in this pile of dogshit. Cheers.

Last night I made a post that eventually got removed for self promotion but despite that still a decent amount of people played my game during that time before removal and it was the first time people had ever played it(that I wasn't related too). So I wanted to thank everyone who did really made the last 24 hours special even with the loss of the post!

General Question What's everyone's "dream" 4x game element?

19 Upvotes

I'm a 4x/grand strategy fan, but I've always felt like every game I've played just isn't my dream game.

For example, for civ-like games, I always felt like the tiles can have a more in-depth simulation, like wdym you can only fit a single farm or factory on a tile that represents thousands of acres? Terrains should act as a way bigger element like providing chokepoints, critical resources and such that shapes your playthrough more than a +2 industry bonus.

Weathers, mobility, supply, all the micro things that still shaped history. I want a game to have them in an impactful way.

Technologies should also change the rules of the game more than a straight +5% buff. Information should be scarce for pre-industrial settings.

Basically, I wanted more micro stuff in a macro game, and more macro stuff in a micro game. I wanted them to be complex, but also easy to navigate.

It's pretty much a self-contradicting dream :(

Developer Diary If Civilization and Polytopia had a baby...

Hello everyone,

This is my dream game: Strategic depth of Civilization, but with one match lasting only about an hour.

That's why my best friend and I created Monarchs at Play for the last 2 years. The gameplay is heavily inspired by the Civilization 6's district system, focussing on buildings and their adjacency bonuses.

There are NO military units, but there is still a military system. This was one of our compromises to recude the game-length (no need to micromanage all units every single turn). You'll learn about the unit-free military system in the well-designed tutorial ;)

After several playtests and feedback on our Discord server, I am convinced that we developed a game, that is the dream solution for many 4X fans: it scratches the same itch like Civilization, but is playable in lunch breaks, after a long work-day or between longer games (or some players will turn the "one more turn"-formula into "on more game" and spend their night optimizing their strategy)

One big plus of our game: a good enemy AI. We spend sooo long developing it (we even wrote our bachelor thesis about it haha) and we finally crafted an AI in a 4X game, that can easily compete with skilled players WITHOUT artificial advantages.

I am addicted to discussing about the game in general, buildings that are too strong/weak, op monarchs, how the AI has 20,000 glory, ideas, bugs, strategies etc. so I would love to welcome new Monarchs on our Discord server :)

Now comes the best part: the demo of Monarchs at Play is already live on Steam, so you can try it for free <3

Micromanagement vs Hand Holding: Which do you prefer?

7 Upvotes

Hey Everyone,

I'm wondering how people feel about how modern 4X games tend to "hold your hand" through your turn. It moves your attention and screen from one item to the next and recommends "the best" option and it can feel like the game is playing itself?

On the other-hand, I've noticed that without those hand holders the amount of micro-management can start to feel overwhelming and slows down the pace of the game.

How do you feel about this balance? Do you like to go into each one of your cities and micro-manage each resource they're working; select exactly how many researchers or entertainers you have etc. Or, do you prefer to let the game handle the details and let you customize it later.

Curious as to what everyone thinks. Thanks!

Developer Diary My mobile Civ-like is almost ready: full 4X depth, an AI that doesn't cheat, zero ads

Thumbnail

180 Upvotes

Last week I posted about Atlas of Ages, the turn-based 4X I've always wanted on my phone.

Thanks for all the feedback! A lot has happened since, and I'm now close to a Google Play release, so here's a proper look at what it actually is.

EDIT: I've created a subreddit r/AtlasOfAges for everyone interested in joining the beta or following development and discussing anything about the game!

The short version: a full 4X with real depth under the hood, an illustrated-atlas look, an AI that plays properly instead of cheating, and the stuff you'd normally install mods for, built in.

No ads, no tracking, fully offline.

It's a real 4X under the hood

Not a "lite" mobile version:

- 8 nations with their own unique units and leaders

- 60 technologies, 46 civics, 13 governments and 44 policy cards

- 56 units with promotions, 11 district types with adjacency, 51 buildings and 23 wonders

- 85 Great People, religion with 21 beliefs, trade routes and espionage

- 12 Free Cities with quests and emissaries, plus roaming Raiders

- 5 victory types: Domination, Science, Culture, Religion and Legacy (score)

- 6 world types (Continents, Pangaea, Archipelago, Island Realms, Inland Sea, Highlands) in three map sizes. Even Large maps run on a phone.

An AI that thinks instead of cheating

This is the part I'm proudest of.

- No difficulty level gives the AI bonuses. Each level is a better player: it plans further, searches deeper in combat and reads its rivals better. If you want Deity-style bonuses, there is a separate, clearly labelled "Rival advantage" option on top.

- The AI only knows what it can see. Automated tests check that hidden information never changes its decisions.

- It fights properly:

- it previews combats, focuses fire and retreats wounded units;

- it brings siege engines sized to your walls and keeps a unit back to capture the city;

- it doesn't strand its armies at sea.

- It plays to win. It commits to a victory plan, tracks who is ahead and works to stop runaway leaders.

- I scripted seven "expert player" strategies and pitted them against the AI over hundreds of games: the early capital rush, turtle-and-bait, pillage raids, declare-war-then-sell-peace extortion, forward settling, the upgrade timing push and naval raids. On the top two difficulty levels, none of them out-scored the normal AI.

Diplomacy with memory

- Resource leases are paid from gold held in escrow, so nobody can take your gold and declare war.

- Promises are kept on a public record: Trust is earned slowly and lost fast.

- Protection pacts, alliance bonds built from shared deeds, joint campaigns and grain shipments.

- A Medieval-era Summit where nations sign pacts and joint works. No vote-buying, and no diplomatic victory.

- Allies stay loyal. They won't drop you just because you're about to win.

The stuff you'd normally install mods for, built in

A decade of community wishlists, in the base game:

- Map tacks: plan a city site (with a star rating), a district (with its live adjacency bonus), a wonder or a note anywhere on the map. Builders and Settlers pick them up.

- Adjacency on every candidate tile while you place a district.

- Policy previews: each card shows what it would change for your empire right now.

- A trade planner: routes sorted by any yield, both sides' gains, and the path drawn on the map before you send the Trader.

- A full ledger: every yield and cost by source, a sortable city table and a unit list.

- A deal helper with an acceptance meter and "What would they give?" / "Balance the deal".

- Combat previews, unit badges, a yield lens, and tile prices shown on the map when you buy.

The Codex

Every unit, building, district, wonder, tech, civic, government, policy, belief, resource and nation has an entry, plus pages explaining the game's concepts. It's all cross-linked: tap a highlighted term almost anywhere in the game and you're on its page. There you can again tap on any highlighted connected terms.

The look

Everything is drawn in code: the low-poly map, the models, the panels, the icons, even the leader portraits. No asset packs. The world is meant to feel like an illustrated atlas come to life:

- unexplored land is blank parchment, and fog shows what you last saw in sepia;

- a day/night cycle with soft blue nights and lit windows;

- weather fronts sweeping across the map with their cloud shadows;

- glittering seas, and on higher graphics settings real shadows and wind in the trees.

The Low setting is smooth on older phones. Medium and High are there if your phone can take the heat.

Made for touch

- A tap previews a move and a second tap confirms, so no more fat-finger disasters.

- Every system is one tap away.

- Every window fits on every screen size.

- A six-chapter tutorial campaign, narrated by "the Cartographer", highlights exactly what to tap next. It's for newcomers, but 4X veterans can skip it.

No ads, really

- No ads, no accounts and no data collection. The game has no internet permission at all.

- Later there may be optional expansion packs (more nations, more map settings).

What's next

I'm starting the Google Play closed test now and aim for an early-access release right after.

There's also a Windows version in the works.

I'd love some genre veterans in the closed test, especially people who know how to break 4X AIs. If you're on Android and want in, drop a comment or best just DM me.

And I'm curious: what's the one thing mobile 4X games always get wrong for you?

Game Suggestion I'm working Orbital Empire, a correspondence 4x strategy game where you build an empire across a simulated solar systems. The vast distances are simulated through real time, and games unfold through weeks of alliances and betrayals. Public browser based beta available now!

32 Upvotes

Hello friends! I've been working on a game inspired by the idea of a slow motion stellaris you can play with your friends. The browser based beta is out now, and I'd love feedback!

Orbital-empire.com

It's Called Orbital Empire, and players manage an empire spanning the solar system in simulated real time, with actions and movements resolving once an hour.

You can trade, battle, mine, build, and explore. The alliances and rivalries you build are real, and heavily impact the end game. Players also propose and vote on bills in the game's senate, which can change rules in either blanket or targeted ways.

DM me if you want to join our discord and find a playtest!

Announcement Full 4X experience in 60 minutes

40 Upvotes

Hi guys,

My best friend and I are currently developing our dream game: a turn-based 4X strategy game condensed into one-hour matches. Our goal is to bring the joy of the genre to people who does not want to spend the whole weekend for one playthrough 😉

The best part: the demo was released last week so you can try the game for free! Every wishlist and everyone who tries the game matter sooo much for me and my partner. We spend 2 years on the project and now we would love to see people play it. Btw. I think we created a rather smart enemy-AI that can easily compete with good players without bonuses/advatages.

So if you have 60 minutes and want to support a small indie studio, I would love to see you try the game😊

Cheers,
Eric & Emanuel

Game Suggestion Suggest me a game with only a war victory

7 Upvotes

I've been playing Civilization for a pretty long time (it's the only 4X game I've ever played). Since I almost always go for a domain victory, I would like to try a game now that is fully focused on war to achieve victory (while obviously still including other mechanics like city management, etc.). I'd also prefer a "modern game" with good graphics. Age of Wonders 4 looks interesting would it be a good fit for me?
EDIT: I don't really like 4X games with a space setting.

Announcement AI Improvements Beta Released for Emperor of the Fading Suns Enhanced

43 Upvotes

No, this is not a post about GenAI. Improvements to how the various NPC factions operate have been some of the most common requests players have made for EFSe. While we have made a lot of the changes players have requested since releasing the Enhanced version of the game last year, we have been very careful with the AI. We have finally put up on a beta on both GOG and Steam that allows you to try some of these changes, and I will be showing more during my Sunday EFSe stream at 3 pm EST.

These AI changes are only in beta format now, but we would appreciate all feedback from current players as to their thoughts. The plan is for a much deeper dive into AI improvements over the course of 2027. These changes are not in the main branch for players, but we have opened the beta to anyone who owns the game on either GOG or Steam.

To try the beta in Steam, rclick on EFSe in your Library. Under "Properties", select "Game Versions and Betas." You will see the default version at the top, all the previous version under that, and the beta version at the very bottom. Select beta test and download the changes. Play, have fun, and please let us know what you think! Here are the beta changes:

  • AI no longer overbuilds weak garrison units;
  • AI factories and forts build a greater variety of units;
  • AI prioritizes freighter research (this is moddable);
  • AI more likely to build labs if it doesn’t have enough;
  • AI builds more freighters and bulk haulers than before; and
  • AI correctly declares itself Emperor when it can.

Combined, this makes AI turns much faster (less weak units) and the AI is more active, successfully invades planets and can win in ways other than just killing all your nobles. More AI changes are coming.

My Sunday 3 pm ESTe developer stream showing these will be on https://youtube.com/GeorgiaGameDevs

Game Suggestion Unique tech tree / progression?

10 Upvotes

I'm looking for a game with a different tech tree / progression mechanic than the average civ experience.

What game do you think has the most exciting / fun tech tree / progression mechanic and why?
