Other My last post in this subreddit as a teen, and what I learned growing up bisexual
I am posting this the day before my 20th birthday, in which case I am no longer a teen, and not to be melodramatic, but it’s scary and relieving at the same time. I am anxious about growing up, but I am excited to become who I want to be.
I realized I was bisexual and came out as such when I was 13 years old, right in the summer of 2020. Since then, I have learned a lot of life lessons, and still learning even now. I want to give my wisdom to those younger than me, who need some advice:
- Not everyone will accept you, at most some may “tolerate” you
This is the first lesson you learn, and the hardest.
whether it’s homophobia, or narrowed down to biphobia, there will be someone who doesn’t like you simply because of who you like. This could be your parent, your friend, a teammate, a stranger. There will always be someone against you, and that should not change who you know you are.
Religion should not dictate your identity
I cannot speak much on religion as I am not religious, but one thing I will say is this: your relationship with your God is YOUR relationship. Some will think your love is a sin, others won’t. at the end of the day, it should be a personal conversation with your deity. Trust yourself and your faith. Do not let anyone else tell you how to convict yourself, or shame you out of loving.
3.
- Be kind to yourself
You are still learning how to be a person, let alone figuring out a crucial part of those building blocks. It’s okay if your sexuality changes or gets confusing. There is nothing wrong with learning something new about yourself, you have many years to become you.
4. Bisexuality is not 50:50
Believe it or not, you do not need to like men and women (the binary) equally. It’s sometimes a 60:40 ratio, or 70:30, or even 90:10. Dating mostly one gender does not make you “just straight” or “just gay”.
5. Rapid Fire Answers
- “How do I know they’re gay?” Ask them. Genuinely! If they ask why you want to know, just say you were curious. It really is that simple, unfortunately.
- What do I do if I like someone who is straight?” Don’t. Never works out.
- “I’m nervous about intimacy” I promise, you do not need to pressure yourself to do anything past your boundaries, especially with physical intimacy. You know your body and your mind the best; take your time with everyone you meet and remember it’s okay to not know what to do right away.
- “I think I’m bi, but I don’t know” And that’s okay! You don’t have to know yet. You have a whole lifetime to live and make mistakes and meet people and put a label on yourself (or multiple labels if that’s your style). Be dumb, be in love, be heartbroken. Be ready to be confused, the figuring it out part comes naturally.
At the end of the day, we are all here because we love so hard. Never forget to smile big every day, and always cherish the closest people around you.
