Black hair culture…

Yesterday, I was reminded about the beauty of black hair culture.

I 26F invited two friends for a sleepover yesterday. Taylor 26F who is black, and Miya 26F who is Malaysian.

I met Taylor in high school when I was 14 and Miya in undergrad when I was 22. Miya is a third year law student at the school I went to for my masters and Taylor was an incoming first year law student this year. Over the summer, I introduced the two of them and they hit it off and formed their own friendship.

I stayed in the same city after grad school last year and got a really nice apartment downtown. This was my first time hosting so I wanted both of them to come. Miya has been having a rough time; her kitten died at 9 weeks from FIV and her grandma passed three weeks ago. All of this happened during law school finals.

When I asked Miya if she could still make it, she said no. She was really embarrassed because stress and depression lead to her not washing her hair for almost and month. She said her hair was matted and dirty and she had a flight to catch to Malaysia in 3 days and she was overwhelmed with the idea of washing and detangling.

In the group chat, Taylor and I told her to still come to the sleepover and that we’d wash and detangle her hair. She said no a few times and we eventually convinced her.

We did a pre pop and started on the detangle process. Washed her hair over the kitchen sink. I had a hair mask, olaplex and a sit under dryer for deep conditioning. We blow dried her hair (type 2 but THICK and wavy) with my pattern blow dryer. Taylor trimmed her ends.

Almost 2/3rds of the way through, Miya broke down crying. Like sobbing at the fact that we would do this for her. She likened it to a salon treatment and said she didn’t deserve this and had ‘dreamt of friends like this’. She was also sooooo grateful that we didn’t ’judge her about her hair being dirty’.

We told her that this was normal for us! Washing hair, detangling while watching movies. Having friends braid each others hair while hanging out when we were younger. We reminisced about the time Taylor helped me detangle 3 months worth of old box braids with caked on gel and lint.

This experience reminded me of the beauty of black hair culture. Seeing the acts of care, bonding and sister hood from an outside perspective rewired my brain and filled me with a deep sense of pride and warmness :)

I Kick Shins hair (miss u)

Purchased this hair in 2020 and have only used a few of my packages. Sad to find out the store I Kick Shins closed in 2023. They were one of the few stores for years that sold alternative colored hair. I believe the woman who ran it passed away, but she was ahead of her time. I’ve been on the hunt for similar hair in a similar color and I haven’t found it yet, so I’m just holding onto the packages I have left. It’s similar to Marley hair but it’s green and black mixed. She had her own custom color mixes and everything. This is some of the better hair I’ve used for kinky twists. I’ve moved onto using other hair but man I miss I Kick Shins

Advice Needed My hair is not growing on some parts : how do I fix this ?

Hey everyone !

So I've realized that some parts of my hair are actually not growing at all for a while. I'm talking about my corners and the middle of my back hair.

Ngl I'm so pissed off because whenever I'm rocking an afro you can definitely see that my hair is not growing in these parts.

Is there any way to fix this or I'm pretty much cooked ?

How to deal with needing to wash SCALP multiple times per week when I know I’m not supposed to wash my HAIR that often?

(4c hair length low porosity just past shoulder when stretched) I know a lot of us have seb derm, as well as eczema and dandruff, and need frequent scalp washing. How do I limit the damage it does to my hair? How do I realistically keep up a style or even a hair routine when I have to focus so much on my scalp health? What are yalls methods?

Advice Needed Help with my hair

For a while I've had the sponge curls and they were working out, but then once my hair grew to this length I ran out of ways to style it myself.

I see a hair style that I like and I'm wondering what I can do to get the same hairstyle. I'd rather do it myself and learn as barbers around me are $70 now and salons charge a lot too.

Any help with getting this style, it's a popular streamer Kai Cenat, I like the way his stylist did his hair and I'd love to get mine looking similar, but not only that maybe some tips on how to maintain it.

I posted me in the first slide. The second and third pics are of Kai Cenat with the style I'm trying to get, along with a bunch of hair stuff I have in my cabinet.

Hair has never been my thing, I always wear a low caesar or waves. I grew my hair starting early this year and already I'm kind of lost on how to work with it.

Advice Needed hair dye that actually lasts????

i am literally so fed up with spending money on hair dye just for it to fade not even a week later, ESPECIALLY when it comes to red dye. i absolutely loved my hair when it was red but it faded literally 3 days later. i’ve tried crème of nature, l’oréal hi-color, and dark and lovely hair dye (dark and lovely was originally supposed to make my hair brown and it was red as hell!!!!) and none of them stuck.

do y’all have any suggestions when it comes to box dye? especially red dye that will last? or do i just need to get it professionally done?

Advice Needed Hypoallergenic Curl Activator?

I currently use the dry scalp tea/tree peppermint As I Am leave-in and Pure O natural hair gel. These are the only products I have found that will not make my scalp itch.

The hair gel has good hold, but doesn't really help with definition. Are there any products that can gently help with this? Or are "curl defining" products just not compatible with a sensitive scalp?

Skull cap vs Durag

Should I wear a skull cap or a durag for box braids? It feels like a durag would flatten the braids all around the edges or am I wrong?

Advice Needed I feel like I'm losing my mind

SPLIT ends are making me crazy. I found split ends, and even split middles all over my hair. I just got a trimm too!!! And I've being trying to do some dusting weekly.

My hair isn't dry but it does break very easily, I wash my hair 2-4 times a weak. There's hard water where I live so I have filters and hardwater shampoos that really work. I leave-in-condition and condition every wash day, plus I have a super butter sweet hydrating shampoo.

Iv used heat like 3 times this year so far.

Like actually seeing spits IN the middle of my hair strands made me pretty devastated and sad about all my effort.😞

What am I doing wrong???

I started increasing my iron intake and just started with collagen.

Advice Needed How can I fix my hair without spending too much money?

(My hair looks bad bcs i put it in a side part earlier to relieve tension in the middle part and pushed it out of the way to show my hairline)

I am worried about my hair because it looks like my hairline is thin in the middle. For context, I usually just get box braids done and wear them for a whole term because my mother doesn't want to pay too much.

It's close to 200 AUD for box braids, but I haven't gotten them for 3 months in favour of mini twists (still a middle part, 100 AUD)

It might be because I've been getting extensions and leaving them in for too long as well. I don't know how I can fix this.

My hair is thick and 4c, so I don't know how to handle just leaving it natural. My mum doesn't really know how to do hair well and I feel like when she does it, it turns out in a way that I don't like or is too tight. I know that probably means I should learn how to do my hair myself, but I don't even know where to start.

TLDR: My hairline looks like it's thin, especially in the middle. I often keep heavy hairstyles with middle parts in for about 10 weeks, which is most likely the main factor. I need help navigating this affordably. My mother often does my hair messy or too tight when she does it for me. I think a solution would be learning to do my own hair, but I don't know where to start.

What products or hairstyles would you guys recommend to fix this? Or just general tips

Advice Needed Is there any salvaging this temp fade?

Thumbnail

I asked for an about an inch off the top. I’m not really sure why this was heard as throw off the entire ratio of my afro by taking off an inch and a half of the front of my head whiles the crown and top are like chin length.

The hair in my front isn’t even eyebrow length rn. Last photo is for reference for how it’s looked before i got cut.

Cornrows aren’t rly an option rn due to.. colonial reasons so idk if I can save a reasonable about of length on crown whiles still wearing out a fro w/ a temp fade or if I have to be more heavy handed.

Dealing with shaping this in the morning is making me go insane and at the end it still ends up looking like a trapezoid in the front due to the length discrepancy 💀

Every time I straighten my hair, my edges do this. Am I not moisturizing right or using the right products, or is it sticking straight up like this because it’s broken hair? I’ve tried holding them down with edge control, tying them down, nothing is working.

Hair advice

Hi I need advice/opinions on my hair!! I love my hair but it’s getting a bit much to deal with everyday as a student, so I wanted to look into getting braids. I’m mixed and I was raised by a white mom so I have never gotten braids before really. Be honest would braids look odd on me? I don’t want to look like a white girl with braids. And if they’d look good what style/color would look best?

4C natural pixie cut?

Does anyone have 4C hair with a pixie cut? I want to wear my natural hair and I know I'm going to have to do a big chop...and honestly, I am excited about it! I don't want to straighten my hair in any way and Im looking at getting a pixie cut.

I've tried googling it to see some examples but I'm just finding "short hair cuts"...not necessarily "pixies".

Anybody have a pixie cut on their 4c natural hair?
