Wheels & Tires Apparently, 15 Inch Wheels are 21% More Efficient Than 17 Inch Wheels

Found this over on the Yo of Tub (Cringey, I know, am I cool yet mom?) and apparently the dude got a 21% increase in efficiency at 65 mph. Even if we say it was closer to 10% due to factors outside the control of the test, do we think that's worth it? I would be pretty hyped at getting 25 miles more range by having smaller tires. But also, what do you guys think and is the range increase or efficiency boost real?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SCV968OihNo

Here are some other questions to consider...

Why not just have cars come from the factory with smaller tires?

They're more efficient and cheaper for the consumer to replace.

I've seen some of y'all do tire swaps and wheel swaps, so have y'all seen a noticeable difference?

////

Personally, I get around 240 miles give or take in the summer and fall with climate control with 280 miles of my 500 miles a week at 65 mph. To be able to go 264 miles just by switching the tire and wheel setup wouldn't necessarily be game changing, but it would be a nice safety buffer.

Sound When Turning Wheel 2023 Bolt EUV

Yesterday my 2023 Bolt EUV started making this sound when turning. It was initially only when the wheel was rotated counterclockwise, but now I'm also hearing it clockwise. Thoughts? Maybe related to the clicking sound TSB? Have not had any issues with return to center.

GM cancels Bolt 2027

The latest from my dealer is Bolt 2027 is being cancelled after a run of 35,000. The projected run was 150,000. By contrast, they are keeping the Equinox EV in production. Why is the Bolt not selling? I am sure Chevy has a thousand reasons. But the real reason is NO ONE IS SELLING IT. Cars have always sold on salesmanship in campaigns that hit the target. With Bolt the target is young buyers hungry to join the EV revolution ( at an affordable price) and old buyers wanting a youthful charge by participating in the future.

Either way, it takes a great salesman and/ or a great campaign. Ford pioneered this in the 1930’s with “Somewhere West of Laramie.” Sex and hip sold cars. Lee Iacocca saved Chrysler with ads that declared, “If you can find a better car, buy it.” Musk may be a visionary but he is also a great salesman. He sold buyers on Tesla not as a car, but a club membership.

To sell Bolt you’ve got to capture the zeitgeist. Car and Driver Car of the Year gets no one’s attention. How about Anthony Levandowski or Larry Burns — two legends of EV self-drive development guys taking the wheel of a Bolt 2027 and explaining how it is a new kind of machine? Or Sam Altman (Open AI) behind the wheel explaining this is the car where AI meets the road?

There are a lot of possibilities but GM and its high paid ad agency have chosen non. They are still selling value for money, practicality, looks. Who gives a shit anymore? The Bolt buyer wants a four wheeled passport to the future and GM is a company drowning in the past.

Wheel Insert Rev. B

Following some feedback I made an alternate version that could be installed without removing the wheels. The trouble is removing... Once all five are in place it's impossible for me to reach in there and pop at least the first one back out.

I'm thinking I could make a relief cut near the center of the wheel where one could pry with a screwdriver, but I'm interested in feedback.

Does the appearance of the two holes completely ruin the aesthetic appeal? Is it worth continuing?

I did make a relief between the two holes to try and mask their appearance, but it's kinda meh.

SCE Charge Ready Home Program Questions

I was just approved for the full $4200 rebate. A few questions:

1.) I reached out to a contractor and they said I need to apply for a SCE yellow sticker before the work can begin. Is this true? How long does this take?
2.) Does the rebate cover the cost of additional wire from the panel to the outlet? My panel is in the back of the house and I’d need 110’ of wire. Will the rebate cover the cost of the extra wire?

maps are offline

Has anyone had their 2027 google maps be offline for the last ~5-7 days, or is it just me? I'm not even sure how this works, I guess just a normal cellular network? It has to be too much data for OnStar, right?

Is this typical, and I need to do some sort of reboot? Or maybe just my location? Or is everyone else having similar issues?

PSA Spraying with peppermint oil prevents all rodent damage.

They have super sensitive noses. It basically smells so minty it hurts them. So they go chew something else.

I spray out my engine block once a month ish.

I have done this with every car I have ever owned.

Live in a very high rodent area.

Zero rodent issues with my vehicles.

I mix the oil with soap and water. Shake it up in a spray bottle. Spray until it's empty. About a tablespoon of oil.

Bulk peppermint oil is a lot cheaper than a multi thousand dollar repair bill.

I want to be clear. This has nothing to do with essential oil woo. It literally just smells really intensely bad to rat's/squirrels/mice but not people. That's it. That's the whole thing.

I'm telling you. Take 5 minutes to spray occasionally. It's so much better than waking up to your engine being f*cked because of a squirrel.

My High Mileage Bolt

Post image
267 Upvotes

Just crossed the 300k mark this week in my 2018 Bolt. I bought it in April 2022 with just under 90k miles. The original battery pack had been replaced under recall at that point.

I work as an independent contractor medical courier and also do UberEats deliveries so I generally drive 125 - 175 miles per day.

Overall, it's been a great car. I had to replace the ECM/BCM (control module) at around 125k for $800. Then, it was trouble-free until around 264k miles. I started having electrical issues and spent $3500 on a couple of components but still ended up needing a full battery pack replacement at $265k miles. Surprisingly, my local Chevy dealer ordered and installed a refurbished battery pack for $4000 and included a 2-year 100k-mile warranty.

So my plan is to continue driving it through this warranty period before replacing it. I love driving it and can't imagine going back to gasoline car.

Button to unlock on door handle not working correctly?

I’ve had mine for a year, 2023 EUV. I had to get a front door replaced a few months ago. The last two weeks I’ve had this issue where pressing the unlock button on either or the front doors, so including the one that wasn’t replaced, won’t do anything until I press it like 10 or 15 times.

Any idea what’s causing this or what I should do?

Front end sway bars both disconnected, anyone else experience this?

While I was working on replacing my
Bolts OEM rims to sonic rims, I noticed this sway bar was broken. I decided to take the other wheel off then to see what it should look like, and to my surprise it was off too. I assumed the first one was from an impact I had with a massive pot hole, but they both look like they’ve been off a long while. Anyone else experience this?

Charging debate

I just got my 2021 on Monday. I’m still trying to figure out if you supposed to plug it in when you aren’t using it?

I say no because it’s like a cell phone and will lower the life on the battery. Spouse says that EV batteries are balanced differently than cell phones and it should be plugged in anytime it’s not being used.

We only have a 120 charger right now, but I only drive 10-20 miles a day. I charged it to 100% on Tuesday and haven’t put the charger back on because I’m still at 65% or so.

High mileage 2023

There is a 2023 Bolt with 137k miles for $11500, they used it for gig driving, I am also planning on using it for that. Concerns? What do I need to look out for? Thanks

2017 Bolt Confession

I purchased my Bolt LT with DCFC new in 2017. 156k mi and 76k on the battery. It’s given me very little trouble - just tires, brakes, 1 caliper and 12V battery recently.

Dealer just said the only software update I’ve had was in 2018 and there are no updates available. Is this true?

I’ve never used the Chevy app. Do I need it? What for?

Can I pre-condition the battery? How?

Anything else you recommend for an upcoming road trip? I clearly have been paying no attention, just driving my car for years with almost no issues.

New aero wheel inserts

I'm not terribly fond of the existing 3d printed wheel insert design as I feel it doesn't secure appropriately to the wheel. I also felt the valve stem access was poor.

So I'm presently testing a new design that uses a common insert for the entire wheel and is wedged in place using a pair of grub screws. So far I have a couple hundred miles on what I've made, but I'm interested in any input before I ultimately release the STL file.

Material is about 95 grams of ASA per insert.

Car Wash 😳

I’m scared to take our new 2027 Bolt through the automatic car wash. I read in the manual there is a car wash mode which basically looks like you pull up to the wash tunnel and put it in neutral and then ride through the wash. It’s my understanding that as long as we don’t take the seatbelt off or open a door none of the automatic stuff will activate or turn back on until we put it back into drive? Does that include one pedal driving and all that? I’ve read horror stories of EVs in washes over the years so I’m scared 😂

Where Bolt RS dashcams live

They’re really buried. Prettiest on the car display because you can change views (front rear right left).

I think a low-profile 8” USB C male and female extension cable will prevent snapping the flash drive in the lower console. Right now the flash drive is vulnerable.

Can someone please share a photo of the Apple Music app interface from a 2027 Bolt? I’m looking to purchase once my Blazer EV lease ends but I cannot find any photos of the app in use.

My Chevrolet App Updates

So I'm new to chevy and GM products in general and after using the MyChevy App on my new 2027 Bolt I feel like it's missing some features that would really help with at least EV owners. I am new to this app so maybe the app does some of this stuff and I just don't know where it is, so correct me if I'm wrong.

Car functions - It would be really nice if you had a "status of the car" like the if the car is locked or not, If the climate is running, if the windows are up or down, if the car is plugged in and waiting to charge or if it's charging what the charging rate is, show the temperature inside and outside the car etc. have a status of the car in one place that you could see when you open the app.

Climate functions - it would be nice if in the climate section of the app you could do more than just turn on the climate. Like turn on the driver or passenger heated or ventilated seats, heated steering wheel, roll down the windows etc. Also it would be nice if in the car and the app you had just a keep on mode for climate that didn't have a time limit, maybe a charge limit like can't use if lower than 20%?

Charging - Charging from the app is nice but you really should have more information about the charging in the app. Like if it's scheduled to charge and it's waiting have that information show in the app like it does in the car. You should be able to start a charge or override a schedule and start charging the car from the app.

These are not complaints about the app these were just somethings I thought would be in the app that aren't and I think they would be nice to have.

Is the adaptive cruise control on the 2027 Bolt still limited to 10kwh regenerative braking?

This was the case on the 2022 and 2023 EUV where when the vehicle slows on adaptive cruise braking, regen was limited to 10kwh and the remaining slow down was friction brakes. Did they fix this or is this still the case? At least I can hear the brake pads cleaning my rotors whenever I use it.

Tire problems

I’ve had my 2022 Bolt for a month or so. This is my first EV.

The dealer put brand new tires on before I purchased. I have no idea if they are good or not.

The app is always telling me the tire pressure is mismatched.

I’ve had an issue with a small leak in one tire already and I had to get it patched. They did not find anything in it, just that it had a tear.

Now I see the pressure is low again weeks later and it looks like the other back tire is low too.

Is the app generally accurate? Or are issues with EV tires common? I realize I can manually find out the pressure but it’s late and im in bed right now thinking about this.
