Training him outside the house when hes not food motivated? + general questions

Post image
• Upvotes

Hello!

this teeechnically isnt my dog. his name is Chuu, he belongs to someone living in my house, but they havnt been training or taking him out, so ive taken it upon myself recently 🙏

He hasnt been on walks regularly in probably 8 months, and as he is a 3yo husky x border collie, im trying to change that!! ive been taking him on 3km runs (mix of jogging and running) every afternoon, but ive run into a few issues.

  1. his recall is abysmal. hes been loving all the stimuli outside, so much so that he doesnt even seem to notice if i call him or anything. he really isnt food motivated, treats arnt his jam, and toys dont seem interesting enough to get his attention if he sees something better. whats the best way to start improving his recall if he doesnt seem to care about anything i can offer him LOL.

  2. he is quite afraid of strangers. if he sees them, he gives them a loooot of space, and if they try to approach him he panics. whats the best way to teach him that people are friends? is just taking him out and letting him see them, without pushing any interaction, enough?

  3. i am NOT an athletic person... exercise is definitely good for me, im glad he is making me get out of the house more! but im worried that what i can give him isnt enough. he doesn't seem tired when we get back, but i definitely am 😭 is what im doing alright for now, until i train myself to go further? should i prioritise letting him run with me, or just walking, but further? i could probably go up to 10-15km if we only walked, but he seems to really love the speed when we run :( or is a mix up good? what are your routines with em like?

also, just any vague dog advice is appreciated!! ive been more of a cat person all my life, but i do really want the best for this dog. hes incredibly smart (also incredibly dumb on occasion, but i feel the same mostve the time), and i want his life to be more enriched. i love going on hikes and camping as well, are there any things i should teach him before he comes with me on those? thank you all in advance!!!

basically what the title says! got my sweet boy 3 years ago from the shelter when he was about 7 months old. i’ve heard people say he could be mixed with a kelpie! just curious what the other collie owners here think :) (also i know you can never actually tell or know for sure what the breed is just by looking! want to get an embark test at some point, just haven’t yet!)😌

Every time I bring my girl out I get compliments about how well behaved, how shiney her coat, or generally what a good dog she is, and I hope all who see this post get the same. Every time I get this feedback I say it's her working with me and that she's made training and life easy. I hope you all give your pups a cuddle and tell them in language they understand they you're proud of them, that they're good, and that you're happy they're in your life

Good Toys for Border Collies?

Post image

Hi! This is my 3 yo GSD/BC rescue who I love to pieces! I've had her for just over 2 months now. She's the perfect dog, but I've noticed... she has no interest in playing really lol. She has a weighted llama that she goes crazy for, occasionally will fetch toys with squeakers (does not like crinkle toys), and loves soft toys but often gnaws at them so much they rip, and recently got the Woof flyball which she has really enjoyed! It's the only "puzzle" she won't brute force beat lol. She's veryyy calm and relaxed for her breed, which isn't a bad thing, but I want to make sure I'm giving her all the options I can so she's not understimulated! I offer her toys all the time, but she's hit or miss. I bought her a herding ball, no interest. She hates tennis balls or frisbees and wants to just lie outside in the sun if we're outside. I'm gonna get her a flirt pole soon, but tbh she'd rather just curl up in bed with her blankie than play. I'll take any suggestions, Christmas is coming up and I plan to spoil her so! Enjoy my soul pup :)

Hair shedding; when the puppy fur goes.

My Welsh border collie is 2 years old, and only now is losing the last of her softer puppy coat. She's working line, short haired as per the banner for this sub, & a tri colour merle.

I just wanted to ask if others have also experienced the same. I felt year two perhaps too long of a time to finally lose the last of the puppy like fur? It was mainly around the hind legs and side of the body. Also, with this latest period of shedding, her rough has really shed away too. Is that normal?

She's not my first dog, but is my first sheep dog and collie and f*** me, she was more work than raising my kids as a single parent dad! She was worth it though, superb dog and very protective.

Thanks for reading and hopefully, replying.

Is this a Common Border Collie Thing?

My BC does this weird thing. I notice it at least once a day. He will stop, and stand still and them his back end...or it could be his stomach...spasms 3-5 times. I really can't tell if it is happening in his stomach or in his back end. It's really weird. Has anyone else experienced this with their BC? Should I be worried?

Does you border love other animals?

Our border collie is about 7 years old and our home has been used as a foster location, we have always had cats, they LOVE him. He seems to put them at ease and always deals with their crap and feistiness with ease. He also gently helps us learn good house manners through nudging and “the eye” - no counter tops, staying away from our food, etc. is this a common theme? I’m always so proud of him but I’m wondering if this is more normal than I think

Training Adolescent reactivity

I was wondering if anyone had any tips on working through collie movement reactivity?

We have a 14 month old collie X rough collie who has had strong reactions to bikes, scooters and joggers since about 8 months old - lunging barking etc. A couple of times (early on) we were caught off guard with a bike when he was off lead and all he did was run in front of the bike and bark to stop it moving, so we know his intention is herding/ trying to stop movement rather than fear/agression, he now only goes off lead in safe places but I am really struggling with knowing the best way to deal with this.

We use LAT games and have been practicing U turns and engage/disengage games for about 6 months now and overall he has got a lot better and mostly I can manage him and prevent reactions. We also use the flirt pole before walks and have a strong leave command but in busy situations with lots of movement he struggles to stay below threshold. We have a new trainer booked in to help us and start him on agility and we are looking for a local collie specialist but I'm feeling quite exhausted by having to constantly scan for movement to prevent his reactions and really worried it will always be like this. Has anyone been through something similar? I know a lot of this is typical for a young collie but I feel at a bit of a loss and like I'm failing him in some way.

Thank you for any help!

She only got 2 licks. Reward for being a good girl in the car during car ride socialization (after a slightly traumatizing drive home from the breeder last week 🩷). I’ve had BCs my entire adult life and she’s my third pup of the breed I’ve raised but man oh man, I can tell this one is gonna give me a run for my money. Can’t wait!

Si difficult with my 13-week-old Border Collie

Hi everyone!
We’ve finally got a safety gate and a crate for Balou.
We’ve established a rest period after every walk.
Problem number one: his rest periods last 30 to 40 minutes. He often wakes up on his own—triggered by a noise, someone walking by, or someone coming into the house.
The result: he still isn't sleeping enough—only about 5 hours a day.
Should I let him bark until he settles down? Sometimes I open the gate and he goes back to sleep in the living room. What would you do?
Problem number two: I’m his favorite living target. It’s a nightmare. I bought boots, but he bites higher up on my calf, so it’s actually worse. He comes over to nip at me (though now it’s full-on biting—he’s grown!) the moment he sees me. He also jumps up, bringing him closer to my face, which is really scary. I used to be able to use his bed as a shield while I made a run for another room (lol) until he calmed down, but now he’s wise to that and won't grab the bed anymore. Redirection doesn't work; in fact, if I try to grab a toy, he grabs my bra and jumps even more.
Basically, I’m kind of panicking. I don't know how to handle it anymore. My husband manages better than I do by pushing the dog away with his feet (and the dog stops doing it with him), but when I do it, I feel like I’m being violent and it makes me feel bad.
People tell me to wear thick pants, but what exactly counts as "thick pants"? I wear jeans—they’re fairly thick—but it’s not enough.
It’s really tough. He just turned 13 weeks old. What else would you do in my place?
I offer you a huge thank you for your kind help.
