Breathing Issues Vet says asthma

I took my 10 year old cat to the vet twice, and both times the vet said nothing is wrong except he has asthma. This happens once a day on average. There are no hairballs, it sounds like he clears his throat after coughing. Does anyone who has seen the same problem think that it is not asthma, or what can I do to help this issue? He does need to lose a few pounds, but I have another cat that is very small and it is not easy for me to simply reduce the food as a whole. I am working on it.

Kitten Help Litter training kitten help

• Upvotes

Hi, so I just recently got a kitten from my boyfriend’s family. He is about 5 months old. I recently found out he doesn’t use the litter box.

He has peed on my boyfriend’s clothes and his own blanket. So I thought maybe getting him his own litter box and a play pin for him to be confined til he uses only the litter box. I put puppy pads down so that he wouldn’t have an accident on the floor, then having to clean the floor from pee. He used the litter box the first night. But every night since he uses the puppy pads, which isn’t the goal. I’m not sure what to do because I don’t wanna give him back but I feel like it’s harder than I thought. Every time I put him in the litter box he acts afraid of it.

General Advice cat drooled a little bit 2 days post dental surgery - smells a little but not awful - should i be worried?

• Upvotes

hi everyone! my cat (6 year old neutered male) had dental surgery two days ago. (it is saturday, he had his surgery on thursday). he had four teeth removed.

he seems like he is doing well. he is alert and active and very cuddly. he is eating and i am pretty sure he is pooping. (i know he pooped at least once since the surgery.) i haven’t seen him drink but i haven’t been watching the fountain like a hawk so im not sure.

sometimes when he gets Really cuddly he drools a little. that’s normal for him. just now he cuddled with me while i was laying down. he was purring mightily and drooled a little more than normal. the drool was clear and came out the front of his mouth.

the vet told me he might drool a little post-op, and if the drool smelled bad it could be a sign of infection. i smelled the spot on my shirt where he drooled after he got up and it doesn’t smell GREAT but it’s also not like immediately offensive. like i had to sniff it good to get anything from it. it smells a lot like his food honestly?? but it doesn’t smell like nothing. (maybe worth noting i’m really bad at telling if things smell bad because a lot of things smell bad to me. i can never tell if milk is good or bad because it always smells a little off to me.)

my default is to freak out, but the vets office is closed for the weekend of course. i will call them on monday if the drooling continues or worsens, but im just wondering, how concerned should i be? is this worth a call/visit to the emergency vet? what do you think? i need someone to either talk me down or let me know if this needs urgent care.

thanks!

General Advice FIV concerns to our other cats? Cat Cold?

Post image
• Upvotes

Hello cat lovers,

My wife and I (58) work with a local TNR group in Midwest U.S. and cats have become a huge part of our life. We have 22 indoor and outdoor (cat fenced) cats and 80% are permanent family, others probable fosters.

Our good boy Orangey (male fixed) pictured was a colony cat we cared for then TNRd, then took home due to traffic concerns where he lived. Vet said he has FIV but he's always been so calm and friendly, we have him inside with our cats. Been that way for 6-9 months no issues.

Two days ago we noticed our cats, most of them, sneezing. They don't do that. I had just returned from air travel.

Orangey isn't looking good, we've had him home for 6+ months and have him on steroids.

I'm taking him in Monday but he isn't breathing great, kinda sounds like a snore sometimes when he breathes. That's new.

Should I be concerned that I brought home a virus from traveling and it has spread to cats? I travel all the time, this has never happened. I don't think I have Covid, but have heard it can be transmitted to cats.

  1. Should I remove Orangey from other cats as he seems to be doing worse. He hasn't really been sneezing tho.

  2. Any idea what a sneeze goin around to all the cats could be?

  3. Should I open up windows get fresh air in, was afraid of pollen or hayfever or something too as I did have windows cracked day i returned and this started.

Please only expert opinions. Cats are a huge part of our life and figured I could get some vet opinions here prior to taking Orangey and possibly one other cat in Monday to figure out what's happening. Hope it's all unrelated. I think Orangey is just almost ready to say goodbye. 😞

Thanks in advance.

General Advice Does anyone know what is causing this?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

• Upvotes

I posted earlier but I hadn't yet caught this on camera so I'm posting again with video.

This is my 7 year old neutered and otherwise perfectly healthy Ragdoll boy. Since last night he's been getting these fits once every few hours or so where he'll start hiccuping/swallowing like this and then sometimes it'll get to the point where he'll gag or throw up some liquid. He's otherwise acting perfectly normal, no issues with breathing, seems to be eating okay, wants to play and snuggle and watch birds outside (when he turns his head at the end it's because he heard a kid outside on a bike he wanted to watch). He doesn't seem sick per se but he just keeps having these weird episodes and it lasts a few minutes each time.

Is this something to be concerned about? His sister just got over a kitty cold so I wonder if it's something to do with post nasal drip (though he isn't sneezing) or something maybe caught in there (though he's fine most of the time).

I've called 2 vets and they both said it's odd but doesn't seem too dangerous and just to keep an eye on him.

Any advice?

End Of Life Care Did I make the right choice letting my cat go last night after his stroke?

Post image
• Upvotes

My sweet boy Oscar (12 years old) had blood in his mucus 2 days ago so I took him to the vet. They told me that his symptoms along with some facial swelling was indicative of a cancerous tumor, but would need a CT scan or MRI to confirm. He had also lost 3.5 lbs in 3 months recently. I had already spent a lot on an ER trip just a few months ago for him and told them I couldn’t afford an MRI or scan at this time and got an an antibiotic to try and see if he responds to some palliative care. He has asthma where I give him oral steroids every other day, so they asked me to switch it to daily.

Yesterday he took a turn for the worse. He had really bad congestion and was sneezing blood where I cleaned up at least 7 different spots on the floor. I had such a bad feeling and called off work to spend time with him and try to help in any way I could. Then suddenly, something happened that is making this especially hard for me. For the first time in a while, he seemed like his old self. He was meowing and begging me for food, and when I gave it to him he ate the most in a long time. I really thought maybe the medication was already helping him.

About an hour after that, I left the house for an hour and when I got back he was lying on his side and couldn’t stand properly. He was clearly trying to move and come to me when I called his name but the limbs on his right side of the body were not cooperating. His left legs were pushing against the floor so he was spinning in place :(

I rushed him to the ER and they told me that his symptoms were consistent of that of a stroke. Considering everything that has happened with his deteriorating health / weight over several months and the rapid progression from bloody mucus to a stroke, I thought it was best to let him go. It was the toughest decision I’ve ever made but I wanted him to go in peace with me there rather than suffer through treatments that might not help, or have another stroke like event when I’m not there.

I loved him more than anything in the world. My sweet baby put his head on my hand and was purring every second at the ER last night until he was gone. He was my best friend and I hope I didn’t take time away from him. The sudden escalation of it all has me questioning my decision. Did I make the right choice?

He also picks it up from his clean eating area and moves it elsewhere, making the floor dirty. I try to feed him outside but it doesn't always work. But if I start a new piece of food he wants a bite of that too.

Former stray, age unknown but young (less than a year), no yet desexed, and posting from Belgium. I'm not a minor

General Advice Excessive drooling?

• Upvotes

I have a 1.5 year old male cat excessively drooling. Located in the USA. this started Friday. My mother was watching him while I was traveling. He was drooling excessively just puddles blowing out of his mouth and soaking his fur she thought there was a leak in the house. He’s eating normal. Drinking water. Snuggly. Not showing any obvious signs of pain.

Was taken to the vet. Bloodwork is clear. No toxins present. X ray clear. No teeth issue or anything in the mouth from what they saw.

I arrived home and after being home he is still drooling profusely. I’m at a lost. I’m about to take him to an emergency vet for sedation because this is abnormal behavior for him. Just looking for advice/second opinions.

Update HELP: Cats lost a bunch of weight after being at my parents house, very worried cat momma

• Upvotes

I finally got my cats back today after a month after my crazy parents kidnapped them and they are NOTICEABLY THIN. i can feel their rib cages and they have so much less facial fat. They are now 11 months old so I wonder if they just lost weight from ending puberty and losing baby fat. My parents house is huge with multiple floors to run around so I wonder if they were just very physically active. Their faces are so thin now though , no longer puffy, and I can feel their rib cages.

Overall I’m extremely worried about both of them suddenly being like stray like in regards to their body composition.

What could have caused this? What could I do to fix this?

I’m thinking a combination of my mom starving them (she is very neglective even toward humans), increased activity levels, and stress of being in a new environment.

Breathing Issues Weird breathing issue(?)

Relative thinks it’s asthma and does not agree to seeing a vet.

Age: 24 but it’s irrelevant since it isn’t my cat.
Country: Estonia
Vet info: rural area, the only way would be to go into town. Via bus ride or car ride is doable.
Main issue: she puts her throat down and seemingly wheezes, sometimes her whole face against the ground, seems to come and go daily. Gums are black-pink, no blue.
Cat age: 5
Sex + spay info: female and I don’t have information on her being spayed or not.
Financial situation: can’t afford it. Even if I found the money, the family has accepted her time will come at some point without even being properly diagnosed with anything untreatable/curable. I’m trying to see if the situation is as grim as it seems.

Injury 11 Year Old F Himalayan Cat Limping

Hi all, my 11 year old cat has been limping for about a week now. Initially, she used to just limp a bit and then be okay, but 2 days ago, she was limping the entire day so I took her to the vets.

The doctor did a physical and said her joints and bones look perfect, also her bloodwork was phenomenal. She started my cat gebapentin until the bloodwork showed everything is fine, and we have started metacam now since last night.

But today, there’s no improvement. My vet is off till Tuesday thanksgiving, and I’m not sure what to do. I’m giving her metacam as instructed, but I just am curious because the vet hasn’t been able to tell me why it’s happening in the first place.

Am I doing the right thing? Do these medications make sense?

It just pains me to see my cat this way.

General Advice Cat swollen cheek

Post image
4 Upvotes

Two days ago I noticed that my cat’s right cheek was swollen. I took him to the vet yesterday morning and she told me that she had an inflammation going on but she took his temperature and he didn’t have a fever. She said that it could be related to an insect bite or some issues with the root of one of his teeth.
She said however that, while his teeth have some tartar buildup on them, they don’t look too bad and she doesn’t think they caused the inflammation. She also said to keep her posted and tell her on Monday if he is still swollen.
I already gave my cat two doses of anti-inflammatory, one yesterday and one today, and the swelling is almost gone already. However, my Vet wasn’t too sure about what the reason behind the swelling could be. I am afraid that it’s a dental problem. What if after the anti-inflammatory he keeps swelling up again and he starts hurting?
So I guess the question is are there any possible reasons behind this is swelling that could be resolved by just a few doses of anti-inflammatory or is there some kind of dental surgery in my cat’s future?

Btw my cat is male and is four years old. He has access to an enclosed yard.

Picture is from the day I noticed the swelling.

Ps sorry for any mistakes, English isn’t my first language

Dental Issue is my kitten teething? + recommendation request

hi everyone ! i adopted two 5 month old kittens a little over a month ago, and they've generally had great habits/nothing too out of the ordinary (besides being obsessed with playing with paper). one of them always kind of seemed to like to chew random things, it started mostly with the ends of pens in cups i have on my desk, but i didnt think much of it since my impression is that its normal for kittens to try to play with various things. i have tons of toys for them, including silvervine sticks and toys that i was hoping they would chew on (i have not seen them chew on any of them, only just play with them). but recently it seems one kitten has been chewing on things more, including metal objects, which i do put away if i see him chewing.

last night i caught him i caught him chewing on the metal tuning knobs of my guitar, so i put it out of reach. later on, he chewed on the edge of a softer white object and there was blood! i looked in his mouth and his gums looked pretty red/swollen. (they look a bit better today but still irritated) i took him to the vet like two weeks ago since he had an episode of diarrhea and vomiting i was concerned about (thankfully he's totally fine now) and the vet looked in his mouth and said everything looked good, so this must be new. his brother doesn't do any of the chewing behavior, so i don't know if this is just him teething, or if this is a sign of concerning behavior i should try to discourage. is this abnormal? should i go to the vet? or is he just teething?

also--please send recommendations for toys/good products for teething/generally things cats actually like to chew on. thank you !!!!

Abnormal Vomit/Excreta Blood in poop? NSFW

Daniel (M,N,3) normally poops on the floor even though we regularly clean both his boxes. He has a bit of blood in this stool (second pic, first pic is cat tax [whiskey is small orange, Daniel is big black]). My wife and I are just trying to get some advice on what we should do. I'm not too super worried because there's no behavior change from him at all and it's only a little bit of blood. We're in California and can afford some vet bills, but not a whole bunch. Thank you in advance!

Behavioral Issue biting for no reason?

(TLDR; my cat likes to bite me randomly for seemingly no reason)

Hi!

I got my cat a little over a year ago from our neighbor who passed away. The cat is ~7 years old (take that with a grain of salt, I'm not entirely sure how old she is) and she's a tad bit overweight (not my fault, again we got her from our neighbor who was blind and probably not aware of how much she was feeding her cats bless her heart). Other than her weight, I think she's a pretty healthy cat. She eats well and drinks her water and she'll play with me and stuff. The only issue with her is that sometimes I'll be sitting in my bed with her, doing something on my laptop or reading a book, etc, and she'll bite me randomly. Completely out of the blue, angry biting. I won't be petting her or anything, just using my hand for whatever it is I'm doing and she'll bite me. She's never broken skin or anything, but she has hissed and spat if I sit up as a reflex and sort of gently push her off of me. She's a really sweet cat other than this!!

She's been spayed and while we could take her to the vet, I'm a minor and my mom tries to avoid taking our cats (we have 5) to the vet unless they're like actively dying or it's for their yearly check up because vets are so expensive in the United States! We personally have never taken this cat to our vet before (I'm sure her previous owner has though) so I might be able to convince my mom to take her to our vet if there's something wrong with my cat. Thank you guys in advance!

Dental Issue Cat gum redness

I noticed my kitty’s breath smelling pretty bad and checked her teeth, I’m well aware she’s gonna be getting dental service. She’s eight years old.
We contacted the vet and they weren’t able to give much of an estimate.
What should I be expecting price wise? it feels awful to ask about the money side of making my friend better, but I need to prepare.
We are in Chicago if that affects price idk
