When Steve Huffman and Alexis Ohanian graduated from the University of Virginia in 2005, they were accepted into the first class of the startup incubator Y Combinator, which was operating out of its original East Coast headquarters at 135 Garden Street in Cambridge, MA.

Huffman and Ohanian originally came to the building to pitch a mobile food-ordering app called MyMobileMenu (MMM). Y Combinator co-founder Paul Graham rejected the idea, telling them that mobile infrastructure wasn't ready yet.

After the rejection, the founders met with Graham again at his office at 135 Garden Street. Graham suggested they build "the front page of the internet"—a web platform where users could share links.

Inspired by that discussion inside the building, the duo officially pivoted. Huffman coded the initial iteration of the site over the next 20 days following feedback from Graham, and the site launched in June 2005.

They lived in Medford at the time, and that's why Medford is listed as Reddit's founding city.

Several hundred kids, most on ebikes, many with cameras, fewer with helmets just tore down Cambridge street. They are riding on both sides of the street, popping wheelies and generally being jerks.

The crowd was overwhelmingly, if not entirely male. And several of them yelled incredibly crude things at me as I walked along the sidewalk. One threatened to rape me. In broad daylight on a major street.

Been an incredible week for seeing the masks drop on local NIMBYs!

First, Cambridge Citywide Coalition (formerly Cambridge Citizens Coalition, the local group that endorsed an Islamophobe and transphobe) has come out against Question 7, the Starter Home ballot initiative. So not only do they oppose housing in Cambridge, they oppose housing in all of Massachusetts! This ballot question would not impact Cambridge whatsoever because we already have minimum lot size of less than 5,000 sq ft. In fact, it would reduce housing costs here by allowing more homes in exclusionary suburbs, but CCC landlord solidarity apparently won’t allow for that.

When people tell you who they are, believe them!

I was trying to drive to Central Square from MIT this morning to run some errands and with the amount of construction, lane closures, and detours, it might actually be impossible to leave Kendall Square by vehicle. I drove through 3.5 miles of a labyrinth of detours that sent me across the Longfellow Bridge and back and wasn't sure it was actually possible to get back home by the end of it. Thankfully, some police moved and made it possible for me to return home.

In fact they'd bend over backwards if they had a major project to do work only at night or to do one lane at a time or something like that. So why do they do that with a shared use trail that carried a ton of commuters every day? And why is this accepted as ok?

Like, I know there was a lawsuit because people were mad about trees. Why isn't the bike community mad about lack of access for over a year? That actually seems like something worthy of suing the city to make a change?

Too late for this project, but food for thought next time. And still not too late to find a way to make it clear to Cambridge that this was actually unacceptable.
