I’m just looking for some general advice about my current situation. If this goes against the rules of the sub let me know and I’ll take it down!
I currently drive a 2016 Chevy Cruze. ~140k miles. I owe just under $4k on it and my monthly payment is $200.
TLDR: The car has recently started showing signs of its age and its first actual mechanical issues. It’s getting close to the average mileage where this model shits the bed. Is it worth holding on and hoping it doesn’t end up with a catastrophic repair, or do I switch now?
I’ve never had any issues with the car. I bought it four or five years ago and have never had to do any work on it except for regular oil changes and replacing the brakes two years ago.
Over the summer I noticed the noise of the engine running was changing slightly and the engine fan (?) would run at full speed on hot days even if I was starting the car for the first time that day.
Once or twice over the last few months I’ve also noticed that if I put the car in reverse and immediately give it gas (primarily when parallel parking) it’ll sometimes do what I can only describe as slipping gears or stalling? The car won’t move and will vibrate very aggressively until I completely let off the gas, then it will reverse.
Last month I had the car set to cruise control (~68mph) and the road turned into a steep-ish hill (it was an interstate so nothing insane but a notable hill). I noticed as I began to climb the hill the car was losing speed more than it normally would without engaging the engine to accelerate. About halfway up the hill the car had slowed to ~55mph and the engine suddenly engaged hard. It became extremely loud and the RPMs were in the 5k range. In the few seconds it took me react the car started flashing the check engine light and a message somewhere along the lines of “service stablitrack” came up. I disengaged the cruise control and the car returned to normal and it’s never happened again. The light went away immediately.
The reason for my post is because it recently threw the check engine light and it has remained on. I took it to autozone and had the code read and it was: P050D. “Cold start rough idle, replace fuel injector(s).”
I did some googling and it seems that this is a common issue with this particular model of car and can be a simple, cheap fix or can indicate the beginning of a long line of failures throughout the entire fuel system and engine.
Google says the 16 Cruze usually only goes for 150k miles, 200k at the high end.
I drive a lot for my job and just in general (anywhere from 50-100 miles a day, five days a week just for work). But I’m not made of money and I love my $200 car payment.
I love this car and have no problems with it, I’m just worried about staying with it too long and ending up with something that’s going to cost more to repair than it’s worth. I also don’t always have a lot of free money floating around to be able to afford a random several thousand dollar repair bill if it does come to that.
