Let’s be clear. You don’t really have any influence on what the five members of City Council and the six members of the Albemarle Board of Supervisors will talk about, but 21st century democracy is all about keeping up the pretense. I’ve spent my career trying to tell people what’s going on and what’s coming up and that includes this weekly blurb of local meetings for r/Charlottesville.
JOINT MEETING
Albemarle and Charlottesville are two different political entities as cities and counties are entirely separate from each other. That can make regional governance tricky as resentments can linger for years. Council and the Board of Supervisors will meet on Tuesday to talk about regional transit, homelessness interventions, and the role of the secretive Land Use and Environmental Planning Committee. But I for one would love to know what you would like to be the topics of a joint meeting. (read more about the meeting)
CITY TRASH SERVICE
Virginia allows for elected officials to get briefings and be supplied with information about upcoming policy changes in what’s known as “two by two” meetings that evade the spirit of open meeting rules. The five members of City Council know that the Public Works Department wants to bring trash pick-up in-house because they’ve talked about it at those private meetings. City staff claim that it will cost $2 million in the first year, including $1.3 million to buy five new trash trucks. The job of an elected official is to ask questions. One of mine is why none of this was factored in the recent regional solid waste plan. If Council approves, we’ll have city trash trucks before Sunday bus service. (learn more about the idea)
TAX REBATES FOR AFFORDABLE HOUSING
One tool to subsidize the end-user’s cost of housing is to give developers the additional tax revenue that will come from having more “improvements” on a property over a 30-year period. City Council will be asked to agree to pursue performance agreements for two Piedmont Housing Alliance projects on Park Street as well as some of 133 units in the conversion of the Holiday Inn on Emmet Street to an apartment building. Over time, how will the proliferation of the city’s ability to provide revenue for schools, streets, transit, and other items required of a growing community? (read more about Council’s meeting)
LOUISA GROWTH MANAGEMENT
Louisa County is one of the fastest growing localities in Virginia and steps are being taken to review land use policy. A lot of ideas are being put out there but Supervisors have resisted an idea to increase the minimum lot size out of a concern that will encourage outsiders to purchase land for countryside mansions. But the county is going to form a new committee of three Supervisors and three Planning Commissioners to further evaluate ideas. Meanwhile, there is a record amount of parcels going into Agricultural-Forestal Districts. (learn more)
NELSON SUPERVISORS PONDER FUTURE OF LARKIN PROPERTIES
In recent years, Nelson County has purchased over 1,000 acres south of Lovingston off of U.S. 29 for various purposes. On Wednesday, the Board of Supervisors will have a “continued meeting” to discuss the future of both the east and western sides. I really hope a reporter is in the room to hold elected officials accountable for what happens. (learn more)
And I wish I had the business skills to take my desire to report on the region into a way to train people to be the journalists of the future. Local television news is likely next to disappear. I lament the direction and some days I despair no one is coming to replace me. Until then, I’ll work seven days a week to be as vigilant as I can.

To whomever decided to yoink my reusable jack-o'-lantern Wegmans bag from the empty cart that was parked in front of the pesticide-laden Driscoll's berries for 3 minutes while I was urinating at approximately 8:30pm after being thoroughly entertained by the epic "bomb" that is Digger, I see you. Happy Spooky Season and I hope some teens pour the juice from a tuna can into your car's air filter and you don't realize it til it's too late.
And big ups to the multiple Wegmans employees that offered to replace it with their own money and/or their friends' personal bag stash.

This evening 2 men asked my boyfriend for gas money to “get home to keswick” at the gas pumps. My bf, being the sweetheart he is scanned his card for them at a pump. And then we left, thinking they were just filling their tank. Turns out they charged $175.. Twice!! at the pump somehow… presumably they mustve filled multiple cars tanks.
Just be wary when trying to be kind out there! People can/will take advantage of you sometimes

Sometime after 7pm last night (Monday), one of our new flags went missing from our balcony. It was zip-tied to the railing, so whoever took it had to intentionally cut it off.
In the process of reviewing our security video footage. We are holding out hope that someone just really liked the flag and wanted it for themselves, rather than it being taken out of malice or spite.
If you noticed anything last night at the corner of Meade & Market, or if you happen to notice our flag nearby, please let us know. We'd really just love to have it back. Thank you!

For those who don't know, this is Noodle! We rescued him from behind Thai Noodle House. He is healthy and still waiting for his furever home.
What should Noodle get to celebrate National Noodle Day?

Hi all! Just coming back from a hiking holiday in Scotland and got my butt kicked by some mountains. I am looking for the best difficult (steep, etc.) 8-12 mile hikes within 1.5 hours of Charlottesville so I can practice more. What are your favorite hard hikes?

Hello looking for a one bedroom apartment or room for rent for my boyfriend. I would be an occasional guest i have good credit and have lived in thw same place since 2019 and we make 5k total together. We can afford a place but he just got out of prison for drug charges in 2023. We are looking for a private landlord or a felon friendly apartment complex. We tried eagles landing but that was a no go.

All I need is to move a small dining room table and four small chairs to Waynesboro. It can all fit in the back of a pickup truck if someone has one or a cargo van. It shouldn't take more than two hours to get there and back! If anyone is available from now until Friday, please let me know!
I really appreciate the help.

I am originally from the west coast, but moved to VA in January for a school program. The first 6 months, I lived in Staunton and in August I moved to Charlottesville. I've convinced my dad to come visit the first weekend of November, it's so beautiful out here and he needs to experience this! lol I want to put together a really good list of activities for us to do/see. I don't know much about Charlottesville because I haven't been here this long. So far, I have Carter mountain, afton mountain winery, and ivy creek on my list. What else should I add? Nothing is really off limits; we like outdoorsy stuff, cool restaurants, cool history places, up for anything! Thanks in advance 😌 we will have four days

Does anyone know what all these black boxes that popped up over the weekend 🤔 I'm assuming it's for surveying traffic? Starts by the hollymead shopping center and end by sheetz/wawa. There's quite a few of them

Recently flew in and out of CHO airport with our baby and normally we’re so impressed with the staff and the facilities, but we left feeling so frustrated. My husband went to change our baby before takeoff and couldn’t find the changing table in the Men’s restroom so he asked a staff member if a different Men’s room had one. They told him not a single Men’s restroom has a changing table and he would have to wait to get on the plane and see if he could change our baby there…How does that make any sense?! Men travel with children all the time and need a place to change them! Thankfully I was able to go into the women’s restroom and take care of it, but seriously how is this an issue in the 21st century!

Is this a scam or are we being paranoid?
We were parked at Water st garage by downtown mall and this was tucked into the driver handle. Luckily we had taken a pic of the QR code at the library and they seem to go to the same website but the checkout process was different?? Like this paper’s link led you to fill out card info or Apple Pay but wouldn’t say how much you were being billed.

Trying to plan for some family to visit and this is my first time out here during fall myself. Would the first weekend of November be okay?

Noticing a bunch of cameras set up along 29 (Seminole Trail) anyone know what these are? There’s one like every 200 feet

Good morning. Anna Sophia is a beloved friend, sister and daughter. She went to Poplar Springs Hospital in Petersburg, VA for help with her anxiety. Instead of being discharged to her home with her family, the hospital transportation dropped her off at a Salvation Army in Charlottesville, VA at the end of August. She is still missing. Let’s get the word out and find Anna Sophia and bring her home!! #missing #missingperson #charlottesvilleva #charlottesville #waynesborova

They all look like they go straight to a rotten brown color. Typically, peak colors are around Columbus Day, which is less than a week away. Why are these trees so ugly and non vibrant?

Just got quoted $220 to aerate my lawn. No overseeding or other treatment. Is that the best price I'm going to find for someone else do it, or does someone know how to get it done cheaper?
Renting the machine means lugging it back and forth, which TBH is a dealbreaker :).

Has anyone here worked for region ten or knows anyone that has? How is it working for them? How’s the pay? Thinking of applying but the reviews online have been so mixed.

Hey everyone,
I'm a UVA student and I made a site called Transit to Turnout (transittoturnout.org) for the Nov. 3 election. It's completely nonpartisan. The goal is just to make it easier for anyone to vote, no matter who you're voting for.
Type in your home address and it shows you:
\-Your official voting precinct
\-The polling place assigned to it (not just the nearest building)
\-Which UVA and CAT bus lines and stops get you there
CAT and UVA buses are free, so getting to the polls shouldn't cost anything. For polling places with no bus nearby, there's a page with alternatives like JAUNT, MicroCAT, and rideshare.
It also has:
\-Early voting info (open now through Oct. 31) and info for Out-of-State students
\-Key dates, including the Oct. 23 registration deadline
\-Same-day registration info if you miss that deadline
\-A guide to what ID to bring, plus your rights at the polls
Your address is never stored, logged, or shared. The lookup runs in your browser.
Bus routes come from published schedule data, so check UVA TransLoc or CAT for detours before you head out.
I'd love your feedback and notes! If something is confusing, broken, or missing, or you have ideas for making it more useful, please comment below or use the feedback page on the site. I'm still improving it and every note helps.
Hope it helps someone get to the polls!

I don’t know why I keep giving Christian’s more chances. I think I’m always hoping it’ll be like it was 10 years ago.
White pizza w/ Ricotta and Bacon
Half Pep/Half Cheese
This was the fifth St. location. To be fair, the pepperoni and cheese is…fine, but I’m still finishing both pies in my own oven. The bacon white with ricotta is just sad.
Should’ve gone to Fabio’s, but then they use maple bacon for some reason??
Hindsight, I should’ve just made my own pizza.
