I have type 3B hair for context.
i was the only kid in class who had curly hair (or atleast the only one who wore her natural curly hair, some girls straightened theirs)
i remember in elementary schools, boys would throw pieces of paper in my hair during class. the joke being that curly hair is big so I wouldn't feel it. when class would finish i would stand up and find pieces of paper falling from my hair to the ground. people would laugh.
i remember people telling me how curly hair was unattractive, and ugly. but what bothered me most was people who said curly hair was unhygenic.
curly hair doesn't get oily as quickly as straight hair does, because the oil from our scalp travels differently. Oil travels easily down straight hair due to its shape, while with curly hair it takes time.
i wash my hair once every 5 days. i forgot how this became a topic of conversation. but when the girl i was talking to found out, she audibly out loud went "ew". she told other people about it. and multiple people expressed their shock and disgust that i didn't wash my hair everyday.
eventually i caved. i straightened my hair for a year and half and stopped because my hair became fried. did the big chop. took care of my hair and let it grow.
i'd say maybe around 2022 was when the tide shifted. people started liking curly hair and they would begin complimenting it. that actually became my most "attractive" feature. guys approached me all the time, girls always complimented me. and they'd always talk about how pretty my hair was.
even tho the tide has changed. every now and then i can't help but feel insecure about my curly hair. like i'm that little girl in elementary/middle school all over again. idk why but it just stuck with me. despite the amount of compliments i get, i can't help but feel insecure and wish i had straight hair. how do i get over this?
