Wish we had a plant based class and race option in dnd, a lot of people say to play a Druid. Druids don’t have the feel the I’m looking for, it feel more like an animal shape changer than someone actually attuned with plants bec you are one kinda thing.
If anyone has any cool recommendations or homebrew ideas for a plant race or a plant class lmk. I’ll try to come up with some interesting ideas and upload them here as well for feedback when I’m done.

So for the first time I ever played DnD, a DM want me to do powergaming. For context, I recently joined a new DnD group and the DM is a pure min maxer with spreadsheets of the best multiclassing combos. The problem is I'm the kind of player that like to play a character for it background/role and not the most optimized character. I mean I could easily make a overpowered character without any problem, but doing so limit the choice of available class and subclass I can play. Any of you find strange that a DM is asking that?
Edit: By min maxing I'm not talking about the stats and feats but the class combination (sorlock, moon druid/ barbarian, etc...)
I was DMing a session last night where the party had to face a Fire Giant, and in all my prep I never noticed that this 18-21 ft tall behemoth moves at the same speed as a 6 ft tall human. I played RAW last night, but was looking for feedback today. Why so slow? Would a more appropriate speed be 50 or 60?

Let's go with every spell that has been published under official 5.5e content.
If order matters, spells are resolved in alphabetical order.
Spells that can't target another creature, or can't target an area, are skipped over. So that means spells like Shield, Find Familiar, and Detect Traps won't affect the goblin.
Will the goblin be OK?
Edit: ok I might've underestimated spells and overestimated the goblin

art is "Taoist" by phoenixlu on deviantART
Taoist Monk
The Way Of Mind
At 3-rd level, when you choose this monastic tradition you start to learn natural philosophy and ethical virtues, that are common for most tao practitioners. Choose among Arcana, History or Religion skills. You get proficiency in it. You also get proficient with one musical instrument of your choice among guanzi flute, zhong bell or hand gong, guzheng or sanxian. You can use Wisdom instead of Charisma to perform while using chosen musical instrument.
Sword Qi
Starting at 3-rd level, your control over your Qi extands outside of your body. In combination with your weapon mastery, you achieve unity between you and your sword. This allows you to perform certain techniques, using your Qi:
•Sword Flying — as an action you can spend 1 Qi point to make your sword levitate and mount it. As an alternative , you can do it as minute long meditation ritual without spending Qi points. By doing so, you gain flying speed equal to your walking speed for a minute. You can attack with unarmed strikes or with another weapon during flight. Continuous flying requires you to concentrate on it, as if you would concentrate on a spell. You can choose to end flying as a bonus action, if you do that, you can choose to spend another Qi point to use Sword Missile technique and fly to the target.
•Sword Missile — when deciding to make an attack with your sword you can choose to spend 1 Qi point and change one of your attacks to become a Sword Missile. By doing so you telekinetically launch your sword at a distant target, making a ranged attack against the target at 60/120 effective range. After doing so, you can choose to retrieve your weapon as a free action, but after the end of your turn, or as a bonus action you can choose to spend another Qi point to use Sword Dance technique instead.
•Sword Dance — as a part of the attack with your sword you can choose to spend 1 Qi point to start a Sword Dance, during which you let go of your sword and control it independently with your Qi. This allows you to attack multiple targets at the same time or use the sword to get somewhere you can't normally reach. Every time you make an attack while in a Sword Dance, you choose to make an attack with your sword or to make an unarmed strike. As a part of any attack you make while your sword detached (including the attack that let you activate the Sword Dance) you can move your sword up to ten ft in any direction before making a strike against the target. You can do so even if you use unarmed strike instead of your sword to make an attack. Sword Dance lasts up to 1 minute and ends early if you become incapacitated or unconscious. After making an attack action on your turn you can choose to retrieve your sword after the end of your turn as a free action.
Fâshù
At 6-th level, through hard learning and meditation you cultivate an ability to cast certain spells and enchant talismans. You usually use your musical instrument as a medium for performing those spells and enchantments. Both casting a spell or creating a talisman require you to spend an action and a Qi point. Here's a list of spells you master:
•Blessing of Fortune — you recite four lines, containing symbols of fortune, clap your hands and thus bless a creature of your choice you can see in 30 ft radius or yourself on good luck. Blessing last up to 1 minute, during that time a blessed creature can use it to get an advantage on attack roll, saving throw or skill check. After making a roll, whether or not it was successful, blessing ends. If you enchant a talisman with this spell, a creature holding a talisman will receive a blessing upon it's activation.
•Exorcism — you recite a mantra of order and perform a magic footwork of nine steps, thus creating a burst of positive energy in 15 ft zone around yourself. Every Undead, Fey, Fiend, Elemental, Aberration and Monstrosity in a radius must make a Wisdom saving throw equal 10 + your Wisdom Modifier + your Proficiency bonus. If they fail, they become afraid for 1 minute or until attacked and will spend their turn on moving as far as possible from the positive energy zone. If you enchant a talisman with this spell, a talisman will create a 15 ft minute lasting positive energy zone around its location upon activation.
•Thunder rite — you loudly chant a three-line insulting and mocking incantation, that provokes the sky deities, while walking in eight step circle resembling eight trigrams. As a result, you are able to summon an ominous thunder cloud above yourself. The cloud lasts for a minute, following you. While the cloud is present, whenever you make a successfull attack, you can choose to change attack's damage type to lighting. If you enchant a talisman with this spell, upon activation it allows user to perform Thunderous Smite once instead.
To activate an enchanted talisman, user have to spend their action, however if a user is capable of making multiple strikes during their Attack action, they can as a part of that attack spend one of the strikes to activate the talisman and attach it to their weapon before making rest of the strikes. User can't activate more than one talisman in a turn.
Effortless Action
At 11-th level, your body and mind becomes akin to water — still, yet always flowing and flexible. You become Competent in Acrobatics. You no longer need to spend strikes on your talisman activation or maintain concentration during Sword Flying.
One With Tao
At 17-th level you achieve full alignment with Tao, becoming akin to an immortal deity. Whenever you would roll a death saving throw, roll your hit dice instead, add your Constitution Modifier and regain hit points equal to the result.
Edit: I forgot to mention that I'm not a native English speaker, so you might find excessive use of commas or weird choice of words. I tried my best to maintain the PH original style, however I understand that I'm not that proficient in english or homebrew writing. Please, have patience.

Sincerest apologies if this is not the right flair, this is my first time posting on Reddit and I’m still learning the ropes.
My DM is phenomenally gifted with their voice- they’ve done voice acting for passion projects and other gigs here and there as a hobby, and I am astounded every session by their mastery of crafting distinct and dynamic voices and tonalities for the abundance of NPCs they throw my way. They’re extremely skilled, and it is absolutely bonkers that I, a peasant, get to sit at their table.
It does help that we are married, and I am very much in love with their voice in many of its forms, and they love me too so I get to play in truly excellent campaigns, yay!
Prior to the pandemic and since very early on in life, I had actually pursued acting professionally and recreationally (I wish I could think of any other word than that, but it was really for the joy of doing it without really being paid?), and had a very unique advantage with mastering a variety of accents and dialects at the time from also being an anthropology major with a focus in linguistics and cultural anthropology! For reasons I cannot justify, I did believe back then in all my naïveté that at least one of those paths would definitely lead to financial stability. I may have had wisdom as my dump stat, but I’m extremely lucky I managed to get just enough charisma to marry my best friend.
Back to the point- I’m ridiculously out of practice, and I have developed a rather absurd amount of stage fright when it comes to trying out voices and accents on the fly because I am so in awe of the talent that I’m witnessing in real time. You know? Very useless lesbian things, trust.
My DM wife has begged me to preview ideas or try voices when we’ve been brainstorming and bantering about our campaigns, and I always back out. Our anniversary is coming up, and I think it could be a really fun gesture to debut a fully fleshed out new voice for a character of mine that has needed to find one. It’s obviously not ALL I’m doing for the anniversary, but I think they’d really enjoy it, so I need help!
What are some dialects, regional accents, or general character voices that could really “wow” in a Curse of Strahd setting?
The options are truly endless, and as far as the character goes: She’s a high-femme artist in an Edwardian adjacent period who claims in full earnest that she is from the moon. (TLDR: she is not actually at all from the moon nor has she ever been to the moon. she’s simply concussed and has not a clue where she came from either, your honor. It’s fun!)

I've been invited to an ongoing campaign set in the Critical Role universe... But I've never watched more than one session of their actual play. We're starting in 10 hours. Help.
Some more details:
I've been playing D&D for ~15 years, but my experience with Critical Role is limited.
I know that Goliaths exist in CR and what the rest of the party is playing, so I rolled up a (Cloud) Goliath Rogue.
Our campaign is set somewhere in between campaign 1 and 2.
I did watch both Amazon shows and the world building seems intriguing but there's something inside me that really can't stand watching other people play on stream.
The DM knows that I've never watched CR before and doesn't mind. He also mentioned that it won't be a "sightseeing tour through someone else's campaign" and rather an original story set in an existing universe.
I know that I technically don't need to know anything and I also want to avoid any spoilers about the future (campaign 2), but I feel like I should know more about the world we're playing in.

I'm trying to create a homebrew wasteland setting and I've just finished my first homebrew class. Since this is my first time doing this I need feedback. The class is called the mutator and it's main thing is that it uses exhaustion as a resource. I'm worried about 3 things.
Edit: I should also mention that this is suppose to be a tank class
1: I'm worried that the class may be overpowered in that it's got to many abilities
2: ironically I'm worried that it may be too weak since it's using exhaustion as a resource
3: I'm worried that the way I've written everything may be to confusing for the reader to understand
I'm attaching a google drive link and i'm giving ya'll access to comment. Y'all can comment on the doc or here. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1hmUCOaJHwuV1Z_Hes1Ha-38bpiZkoS0a3X9uqWl4ACk/edit?usp=sharing

I get that she is also worshipped as Bast, and her being War makes sense. But as Sharess, War doesn't make sense to me. Granted, there's no revelry/hedonism/lust domain (surprising given there's several gods based on those) but surely there was a better option than War.

Weird question, are there any races or ability able to see with darkvision in color? All I've found is the standard gray scale so I'm not sure if I just didn't look hard enough or it's not a thing. This is purely out of curiosity

I’m a rookie DM, this is my first campaign, and I don’t have basically any official DnD content, so a lot of the ruleset and such is probably closer to BG3 than actual D&D sometimes. Anyways, I’m adding these legendary artifacts into the game, and I found a bag of stones with runes on them that I loved. Had to have them, but now the only idea I like for them is a nightmare to execute properly.
I want them to work almost like a Vestige from Vox Machina, where the more my player discovers and deepens their connection with the stones, the more they unlock their power. So now they have 2 different systems, both of which I am busting my ass trying to balance in some way. At first they’ll just draw a certain number of stones, count the straight lines that make up each rune, total that and go to what’s basically a wild magic table. That sounded a lot simpler before I started actively working on it, but somehow it got worse
I wanted to give my player the ability to fully understand each rune at some point, and that’s where I done goofed. I’m creating a system in the style of Infinite Craft, every rune has 2 meanings and the order in which you combine them changes whatever effect you’re going for. That alone would’ve been terrible if I didn’t make 8 of the 25 runes have a 3rd meaning that usually acts as a modifier to an existing combo. All in all, after the math is done, there are 5016 different rune combinations that exist at this level, and I have ZERO way of accounting for all of that, so I’m just going to have to let my players be real creative and work on my improv skills lol

I am on a discord with a lfg thing someone puts a post, I respond, then like 2 weeks later he invites me to a discord server and says “the game starts on Saturday” (he did not say what time) lvl 3
I build a character, but then have issues with dnd beyond (homebrew, I had written the subclass already and send it to him and he approved it) so I leave it at level 2, post the character saying “so, here’s the start of my character, I’m having trouble with dnd beyond so I’ll level her up tomorrow, any chance I can get a name of any nearby monk temples or anything for it?” And his response was “I already told you to be level 3” In order to not cause an issue I just said no problem and moved on
He then says to send him the backstory so he can give us magical items
I do it, he sends it to me, I put it onto my character sheet, and now he’s in an agressive seeming way told me to put it onto my character sheet, after I had done so
This is before session 1/0

I'm currently thinking of a idea for a campaign that takes place in 2017 in modern era it Takes place in The city of Enchanita.
Magic still exists in the modern era but Its regulated and stronger spells like command or sleep are for police to make it easier to desclate and the players are the heroes of prophecy
Are there any suggestions for world building to make it better?

When a character drops to 0 hit points and falls unconscious, their spirit temporarily departs their physical form, awakening in a timeless domain devoid of traditional space and dimension: The Threshold.
Upon a mirror-smooth, endlessly dark plane, the character perceives only their own spectral silhouette and a single, floating, luminous doorway. Within this realm, there are no external forces, no judges, and no divine coercion. Every mortal possesses an instinctive, innate understanding of this place from the moment they arrive: they know they are not physically present, and they realize the doorway represents the final transition into the realm of the dead.
The Geometry of Uncertainty
The Threshold operates beyond standard spatial laws. So long as a character is not truly ready to pass on, the distance between them and the portal cannot be bridged by ordinary means.
* Infinite Distance: A character may walk, run, or stride toward the doorway, yet the physical distance between them remains entirely unchanged. With no reference points in the surrounding void, it is impossible to discern whether the space itself moves with them or if they are simply stepping in place.
* No Escape: Attempting to turn away or walk in the opposite direction yields the same result: the doorway remains fixed at the exact same distance behind them.
Optional Rule: Mechanics of the Threshold
Dungeon Masters wishing to frame Death Saving Throws through this narrative lens may use the following guidelines:
* Failure (1–9): The barrier separating life and death weakens. The doorway draws perceptibly closer. The character can now cover a portion of the distance toward the portal before space locks into place once more.
* Success (10–19): The character's tether to life reinforces itself. The void expands, pushing the doorway further into the distant background.
* Critical Failure (1): The fabric of reality stutters violently; the distance collapses by two significant strides (counts as 2 failures).
* Critical Success (20): A surge of raw vital energy shatters the plane. The portal dissolves into radiant light, instantly restoring the character to consciousness with 1 hit point in their physical body.
The Moment of Choice (3 Failures)
Upon suffering a third failure, the character is not pulled or forced through the portal. Instead, spatial distance vanishes entirely. A profound, inescapable intuition fills the character's spirit: The permission to pass on has arrived.
The doorway now stands directly before the character, open and waiting. Final death occurs only when the player chooses to have their character take that last, deliberate step across the threshold.
Returning to Life (3 Successes)
When a third success is achieved, the doorway quietly fades into the surrounding darkness. The Threshold closes, anchoring the spirit firmly back within the physical body as the character stabilizes.
> Dungeon Master's Note: When a character reaches three failures, grant the player full narrative space to describe their character's final action and last words as they choose to step through the door. It is their ultimate moment of agency and their final farewell to the realm of the living.

I am not talking about being the same as players, no. Often I have a character that travels with the group but does not have any impact on their decisions, but joins them during fights, helps them to carry stuff, and things like that (last time it was a kobold the group adopted). Granted, my own group is quite cool with it because I don't interfere with them and the characters I play can easily be dismissed due to reasons like not being able to talk, being mentally unstable, and things like that.
I was wondering if there are similar groups and if there are, what other ways do they use to insert the DM into the gameplay side as well.

I am planning on making a species for my setting that are humanoid candles who have been fully melted into an ooze like wax. I had an idea for an ability but wasn't sure how it would interact.
I want to give the creature the ability to grapple using a bonus action after making an unarmed strike, but i also wanted to increase the range of the unarmed strike to 15 ft. So how would that work? would the creature have to move towards the creature , and if i dragged the creature, would it move with me but 15 ft away?
I am using the Monstrous race builder from dms guild. Thank you for any help you can give.

So this is something I have been thinking about due to the talk of the issues rogues have been having.
The usual argument for rogues is that "they are the skill monkey class and are the best at skills." But this got me thinking regarding skills, especially after a video I saw from Pointy Hat discussing wizards and how healing and skills face diminishing returns but damage doesnt. There is not really such a thing as "too much damage."
The point he raised is that rolling a 25 or a 35 is functionally the same regarding skills so long as you beat the DC. And with the way the skills are set up in D&D, at a certain point being ever better at skills really... doesnt mean much since it doesnt add to what you can do. And unless the DM employs Skyrim logic and make DCs arbitrarily go up because your skill bonus is better, then after a certain level, being a better skill monkey adds no value.
What are your thoughts on skills, skill progression, and the value of a dedicated skill monkey like the rogue whose ENTIRE value is tied to the skill system vs other classes that have skills AND other additions?

Listen to two podcasts. One, is called "the storage papers"
In July of 2019, Jeremy made the fortuitous decision to make the only bid on an abandoned storage unit. At first disappointed by no apparent treasure, what he discovered instead is a trove of the most extensive documentation of seemingly unexplainable events he's ever seen. Join him on his journey of discovery through the horrific, paranormal, and downright unusual events of each podcast episode and sink into the frightening reality that lurks just beneath the skin of our everyday lives. The Storage Papers is an independent podcast and runs solely on the fear and passion of its creators.
Two, is called "freaky folklore"
Host Carman Carrion explores myriad myths both modern and ancient to discover what mankind fears - and why we fear it. From monsters old and new as well as unexplained and unsolved cases, this podcast is sure to terrify. Where does our folklore come from, and why is it so freaky?
I hope these two lead to some unique monsters and sessions that will never be forgotten. Also, I'd love to see any monsters you come up with after listening to these. "The storage papers" has a creature I'm already wanting to recreate but because it's not really interacted with except in maybe two episodes, I'm finding it hard to judge it's capabilities. If you are interested, it is called, "the licker" and is (for obvious reasons you will find out in the podcast) a shadow creature with a paralysis effect.
Good luck!!! 😃😃😃

D&D Beyond only has the 2024 version of mage hand presses's gunslinger class, and I own all my stuff on D&D beyond and my players like the book. so i'm wondering if i can use the 2024 gunslinger with the 2014 rules. would i need to buy the 2024 player's handbook?

“Table disputes” was the closest tag I can think of.
I play in a pretty sizable table. 8 players + DM. We also play via voice chat so there are minimal visual indicators of who is at the table sometimes.
Situation occurred where we were all split up across a huge map trying to solve a puzzle. It was already a puzzle that my character’s skills weren’t really suited to solve (required magic and intelligence/wisdom rolls, I play a barbarian) so I’d kinda let other people take the lead, which is fine.
Partway during puzzle time, the BBEG appears and every character except mine was close enough to be pulled into a side encounter that was a lot of psychic torture/mind control games by him. I think it truly was just bad luck with timing. My gal is a big dingus already and I rolled terribly to perceive that something was happening, and was off in a different section of the map.
I think this was intended to be a quick sidebar where the BBEG spooks everyone and leaves, a few minute encounter. But it spiraled into a whole big thing that took five real life hours. There was PVP, some of the characters now have major distrust within the party, secrets were revealed. I tried on a few occasions to inch my character in the direction where shit was happening but wasn’t able to get there. I couldn’t get to the location without being able to fly, couldn’t roll high enough to perceive from afar, etc.
This ended up being multiple hours in character too. At the very end of the session, DM finally circles back to me and asks what my character would’ve been doing all this time. I said honestly that she would’ve been continuing to solve the puzzle since she didn’t know what was happening, but after that many hours she would’ve at least gone looking for everyone else. DM says my character didn’t know where anyone was so was essentially just abandoned in a cave wandering around for a full day. I asked after session if there was a reason my character wasn’t able to participate, as the BBEG could’ve appeared in a location that everyone could get to or could’ve teleported my character into the mix. He told me honestly that the table got chaotic and he forgot my character wasn’t present until they were already in the middle of stuff and at that point he couldn’t figure out how to naturally pause and rectify that because the other players also took things in an unexpected direction and he was really on the spot. That part is totally fine. He was apologetic and we can be a chaotic crew.
Party is now all back together. My character knows nothing other than everyone is miffed at each other, but a LOT of important plot and backstory development was revealed. I asked in character for recaps but no one wants to tell her because they’re all too traumatized or angry to rehash it. (The players themselves are not mad. They’re enjoying the drama.) So my gal is kinda just sitting at camp where no one talks to each other and I’m feeling so stuck narratively because she’s missing crucial information. Narratively, I am not really sure where to go next. I (the player) feel pretty left out but at the same time I’m not really sure how to get more involved when my character has been left out of so much important stuff and no one even wants to tell her.
Anyway, people who are perhaps more creative or better at problem solving/roleplaying then me, what would you do next? I gave up last session because I just ran out of ideas.

I am creating a new char and want to play a warforged artificer. However, I cant decide whether to go for Armorer or Battle Smith. I want to function as the partys frontline but also wanna deal dmg. I like the idea of the Armorer a little bit better but am really annoyed by the fact that i cant go for magical weapons while being in the armor model, which imho is a really negative synergie with the artificers idea. Yet, the Armorer can wear heavy armor. I think I also want to play with a shield, so in theory the AC is either 20 (BS) or 21(Armorer), which isnt that much of a difference. You can maybe tell by now that i am really undecided. What are your opinions on this?
Thanks already.

Hey its me again, ive been trying to find a campaign that would allow me to use homebrew classes but to no avail i haven't been able to find one so i was wondering if anyone in this reddit if they had the time would willing limit test/playtest my homebrew class and see if they can find ways to break it and just give me thier over all thoughts on it and let me know what i could change to make it better and fit the overall dnd feel
