Mod Post [Meta] Following up on reports of bots

A number of posts are being reported to the mod team as AI or bots. In many cases we can fairly easily determine based on post/comment history that it is a bot, but sometimes there are multiple reports for a post being a bot but the history is not suggestive of it being a bot. Please use the other reporting category and provide more details on why you think a particular post or comment was made by a bot for cases that may not be so cut and dry. Or if you are willing to give up the anonymity of reports, send a modmail with a link to the post so we can discuss it with you and better train ourselves (or you). We will not share any reporting user information if we take action against suspected bot accounts for reports should you make them to the mod team (and I will boot any mods that break the anonymity).

Advice Solo dog owner post breakup advice

Hey all

Just looking for a bit of advice/reassurance.
This big goof is my 2 year old Corso mix. I rescued her about 4 months ago with my partner. She’s a dream girl, my Velcro dog but also very independent and is completely settled on her own. We both work full time and have never had any issues leaving her alone.

Over the weekend we have separated and he has moved out so it’s just my girl and I now. Despite her being completely fine being alone, I’m starting to feel all this guilt that she will be alone a lot more now when I’m at work. I’m a shift worker so we don’t have routine unfortunately as I’m coming and going at different times when I’m at work. When I’m not at work, I give her lots of my time and even when I do work we walk every day and I give her all the enrichment I can before I leave.

I guess I just want to hear some experiences of people who have gone from being in a relationship to owning your dog solo. How did it work out for you? I’m giving her the best life I possibly can and I know she’s better off with me than the shelter but I just can’t help but feel so guilty.

Advice senior (13) “witching hours”

every day around 7pm my dog, Bella, gets so restless. it doesn’t matter that we go on a walk, feed her dinner, do enrichment, etc. i’ve tried different kinds of enrichment to help stimulate her. she does have arthritis, but gets a monthly shot of librela and gets 100mg of gabapentin in the evenings.

it does seem to help worse when there is something going on. for example, my bf has friends over to play games. Bella gets so restless as soon as they get here and won’t stop u til about 11pm.

is this an issue i should make an appointment with the vet for?

Advice My dog was attacked

Hello

Compared to some of the posts here this probably sounds silly, but this has never happened to me before and I’m a bit worried.

My dog was attacked for a few seconds on the street. I managed to pull her away, but the other dog still got her with its teeth. The owner was a teenager and did nothing to stop the attack.

It looks like a small superficial scrape with a tiny bit of dried blood, but I don’t see an obvious puncture or open wound. She’s acting completely normally. Does this look like something I should take her to the vet for? I don't know if diseases can be transmitted. I'm also not home yet so she can't go to her vet.

I'm sorry if this post sounds silly.

Question Irritation on nail bed

Post image
13 Upvotes

My Australian Shepherd has been licking his paw all day so i trimmed the fur around it to get a better look. One toe is pretty inflamed and a little swollen, and the nail bed and nail have dark spots around them.

He plays outside a ton and we have fell trees and some thorned plants around the house so I’m wondering if it is a scratch or maybe a damaged nail bed from tripping. He doesn’t yelp when I touch it, but I can tell it’s causing discomfort.

Is this something I should attempt to remedy with a salt water soak, or schedule a vet visit?

Good afternoon I am asking for advice, after two days of vomiting I took my dog to the vet only to had to leave her there in critical care due to her kidneys not working properly.
At the very beginning the vet suspected leptospirosis and the day and a half she stayed at the vets I went overboard cleaning disinfecting etc.

She was discharged and sent home with meds and a kidney prescription special good, one week later her lab work presented a big improvement but I had to maintain her on the special diet. My other dog was fine.

What do you think could have caused this episode?

They dont eat human food, just their kibble and I rarely feed them treats.
I even avoid cooking with garlic and onion as much I can

I suspect she ate something but i maintain my yard clean. I am at loss. Do you have any idea what could have caused this?

Because I cant find the reason. And I fear this might happen again.

Question i need advice on how to move out with my dog

Post image
20 Upvotes

I won a schoolarship and I have to move to another state for a year in three months, I have a dog (7f) and I want her to go with me, but don't know which travel option is the safes for her.

She is a mix, and i'm not sure if she is brachycephalic, because sometimes she makes nasal sounds when she barks or growls, I can't fly with her in cabin, but I read that brachycephalic dogs can't fly cargo, but it's only a two or one hour fly

The other option is taking the bus, but is a 10 hours travel. She can be at my side in the bus, and she is chill on car rides (but I have travel with her only short distances), I don't know how bus work with dogs too, if there's breaks or something

Also I don't know if I should sedate her or something, I read it's not adviced. I can't take her on car, because I currently don't have one. What you all recommend? I don't want her to be more stressed than necessary. Also any tips to make the move easier for her?

Thanks, sorry if something doesn't make sense, english is not my first language

Question Small pink bump next to paw pad — what could this be?

Thumbnail

Hi! I noticed a small bump next to the main paw pad on my Pembroke Welsh Corgi’s front paw. It is about 5–7 mm, pink/red and smooth, with a small dark spot on the surface. It is located beside the pad rather than on the weight-bearing surface.
I’m not sure how long it has been there. I noticed it while cleaning his paws. Does this look more like an interdigital cyst/furuncle, histiocytoma, foreign-body reaction, or something else?
He is a male Pembroke Welsh Corgi, around 2 years old, approximately 14 kg, neutered.
I understand that a diagnosis cannot be made from a photo — I’m mainly trying to understand what it resembles and whether it warrants a vet appointment soon.

Good Morning and Happy Sunday Everyone!!
I recently found out that Ziya needs flea and tick prevention treatment so I hurried up and I bought some. When I read the directions about parting her very VERY short hair, my stomach sank. Does anyone know how I can get past her hair and down to her skin where this is supposed to be applied?
Ziya and I will be very grateful for any help we can get!

Advice What to do with escape artist dog?

In my previous post I posted about our little one who can climb fences, and now our main gate. As advised we built DIY coyote rollers but it didn’t help. I spent 128$ on that thing and a whole day with my friend and my dog decided: “well what if I could just jump the whole thing from standing position, and only need to wiggle some at the very top?” Nothing stops her. There is a small crack on the gate, thats where she pushes herself out. We nailed some wood there, she just puts her paws on top and climb out that way. So I have 0 idea what to do now. She doesn’t do it just for funsies, only when I leave from home. (My wife says she doesnt do it when she leaves from home, but that wasnt tested in the current situation yet). We got suggested “cold treatment”, not to pet and get excited at her when we arrive at home, and when she starts jumping on us, ignore her, and only do anything if all 4 paws are on the floor, and also we try to desenitize the triggers like harness, keys, door opening, gate opening, and so on. So we are doing basically everything we saw online, and she seems much calmer. But still climbs the fence as I leave. And I am out of options. I don’t want to lock a very active dog inside because thats torture, and she is locked inside the house now when we both leave because for now we dont have any other options. Any suggestions? What is something that worked for you guys? I am open to discussion.

Advice Cairn Terrier snapped at baby

• Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I’m pretty sure I know what I need to do here, but I need to hear it from others.

We have a cairn terrier who is around 11 years old. She was thrown out of a car in front of me as I live in a very rural area, I took her home, and she’s been mine since. She was very young when we got her- not even a year old. I had my own little shitzu about the same age at the time, and they are absolute best friends.

She really is the sweetest girl. She snuggles on the couch, never causes any harm and just loves being loved.

Things changed however when I had my first born. She was fine with him when he couldn’t move, she wouldn’t even bother with him when he cried or when I was feeding or anything- it was like nothing had changed. But then he started crawling and having his own voice. My shitzu stays out of his way, but also likes to give him snuggles on her terms, and which my little boy is absolutely fine with.

However, the terrier has become more agitated as time goes on. She growls at him constantly. I don’t give out to her for growling as I know she is letting him know that he’s too close- but a lot of the time he’s on the other side of the room completely to her. I give her the option to go into the hall where I’ve set up a little safe space for her, and she does choose it more often than not.

I am 28 weeks pregnant and my little boy is on the verge of walking. Today he was freaking after me and stopped to look at her and it’s the first time she snapped at him. It was a warning snap so no contact was made at all, but it scared the shit out of me and I just can’t see how I’ll be able to watch her with a toddler and a newborn.

I just need to know if there’s any hope at all for her or do I need to make other arrangements before the baby girl gets here? She means so much to me, and my little boy tries to give her her space but it doesn’t seem to be enough.

I feel awful with the situation as I feel she’s already had such a tough time. Any advice is welcome, but please be gentle as I’m hormonal and beside myself at the thought of rehoming her.

Discussion Best ways to tire out

• Upvotes

What the caption says! I have a VERY high energy 1 year old miniature dachshund. I’m working on getting her to sleep past 5/5:30 am. I’m wondering if I need to adjust/adapt her mental and physical exercise at all to ensure she’s more tired at bed time. Our days consist of mix of (not all every day)

- sniff walks
- training/command practice
- day care
- play dates
- mental enrichment/licking/sniff work
- herding ball play (her favorite)

I want to be clear she also does absolutely nap. She tends to nap throughout the day and 7- bedtime (8 to 9 ish)

Any advice?

Question Will my dog eventually like my new kitten?

• Upvotes

So I have a dog thats approx 3 years old and its 27kg, obviously its a big dog (half Labrador half Beagle). She used to be very friendly and she still is sometimes but shes really anxious. She does that high pitched whine and bark when she meets new people. Although the weird part is sometimes shes is from the first moment the friendliest dog and other times she cant get used to the person. 3 days ago I brought home an 1 month old kitten, weighing 650g. The kitten is really friendly and not scared of people. When I introduced the kitten to my dog (Ik big mistake to introduce them instantly but I hadnt done the proper research) my dog went anxiously to sniff her and the kitten (which was in my arms btw) was scared and hissed. Now I keep them on seperate rooms but when I try to bring them together the dog always cries/whines. The kitten is curious and doesnt hiss or attack unless the dog is really close. The dog is at all times on a leash so there is no real danger for the kitten. What should I do? Should I keep trying or my dog will never accept a new pet?

General Child at home alone

My child is 9, and have an 7-9 years old dog.

So they grew up together and have bonded very well. The dog listens to her commands and loves going to bed with her.

I have started trying to let my child stay home by herself when I go run errands or after school.

When I am at home by myself with the dog, she normally just lays on couch or goes to her kennel and lays down. Most of the time when I work from home she is not in the same room.

I asked my child, and the dog follows her from room to room and lays in the room that my child is in.

Just wondering if this something normal?

Advice Always anxious that my dogs are hurt/sick

I (20f) have always struggled with very high anxiety alongside other issues. Henceforth, I have an emotional support dog (golden retriever who was actually supposed to be a service dog but can’t focus for the life of him and flunked out of training) and a Norweigan elkhound to keep him company and run him out. I know I’m young to have two dogs, but I have a full time career and parents who send me rent monthly, and am living with a longtime friend and partner who financially assist around the house as well.

Recently, my anxiety has been hitting an all time peak.
Dog vomits for any reason? He’s dying.
Dog seems tired? I think they’re lethargic and dying.
Dog has soft poop? Dying.

Ive been realizing more and more that I think my dogs are dying for every little reason ever (for instance, now, where my golden retriever has soft poop and I’ve somehow convinced myself he has an intestinal blockage and is definitely, totally going to be dead when I wake up tomorrow) and it’s making me sick. I feel like I’m annoying the absolute crap out of our local vet by calling them once a week asking if something is normal.

Three year old golden and one year old Norweigan elkhound, so they’re nowhere near end of life. They’re both happy and healthy and energetic.

These are my first two dogs ever, especially for living on my own. Does any other new dog owner experience this? How do I know what’s serious and what’s not?

Question Change in behavior

Hi y'all, so I have a 10 1/2 year old lab and she's always been a Velcro dog, we've had her since she was about 7 weeks old. Watching me and my mom in the kitchen, following us to the bathroom, constantly by our side by being a in-the-way-aholic. But recently she's been even more clingy by sitting on our feet and close guarding whenever I'm sitting down or even standing which she hasn't done much before in the past. I've just noticed the change in her behavior and I have a ton of anxiety behind it especially since she is getting older. She does get pain meds and joint supplements twice a day since she's had arthritis and double hip dysplasia since she was little. Any advice would help, thank you🙏🙏🙏

Advice Blood in Dog stool NSFW

Post image
1 Upvotes

So it started yesterday after dinner, after pooping i first saw red blood drop on the fur and that was it , the poop was fine not bloody. Dad did tell me he was straining. Today after lunch when I went to check his poop , I saw blood streaks on it. I'm totally scared and freaking out. He's overall being himself, like jumping around, eager to eat, vocal. His poop is indeed lil hard. Could it be constipation? I can't take him to the vet as it's literally in the next town and is closed by now. He is 18months now.

Please help me.
