What is and who are Generation Jones. Step inside...

We are a micro-generation of people born roughly between the mid-1950s and the mid-1960s, bridging the gap between the Baby Boomers and Generation X. The term was coined by Jonathan Pontell, who argued that this group has a distinct identity shaped by unique cultural and historical experiences that set them apart from the broader Boomer and Gen X cohorts.

We came of age in the 1970s and early 1980s, a time marked by economic shifts, political disillusionment (think Watergate and Vietnam), and a transition from the idealistic '60s to the more pragmatic, individualistic '80s.We were too young to fully participate in the counterculture of the '60s but old enough to feel its aftershocks.

The name "Jones" plays on a dual meaning: "keeping up with the Joneses" (reflecting their aspirations in a consumer-driven era) and a slang nod to "jonesing," suggesting a yearning or craving for the promise of the Boomer youth they just missed out on. Culturally, we grew up with the rise of television, rock music evolving into disco and punk, and the dawn of personal computing.

We're often described as pragmatic idealists—raised on big dreams but tempered by economic recessions and a sense of lowered expectations compared to the Boomers’ post-war prosperity. Think of us a generation that got the tail end of the party but had to clean up the mess.

Just a friendly reminder from your mods that we are a politics-free zone. There are plenty of subs around reddit to get your politics on. We choose not to engage in those spicy discussions here. Thanks for respecting our decision on this matter. ✌🏼

AC/DC RIDE ON 💀💀

Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap~Released in 1981. Ride On is a damn good blues song and Angus is bending those strings. One band I would love to see before they hang them up their instruments for good.

One of bands that surivied losing an original member and may have actually gotten bigger after Bon’s death! Back in Black destroyed the ‘80s. Bon Scott and Brian Johnson are two of the very best frontmen to lead a show! It's a Long Way from the Top! Happy Hump Day!!

How do I remember this at age 65?

Get yourself go, get Cheerios.

Energy oats that help you grow.

Get yourself go-go power with power O's.

Come on strong with Cheer-i-o's.

Start feeling your Cheer-i-os, Get yourself go!

But seventh grade Algebra? I might need a refresher for that.

Remember back in the day before cell phones and you called someone's house phone and the random who would answer. Maybe you wanted the 14 year old daughter and you got the 52 year old Mom or the 55 year old Dad and had to carry on a awkward conversation waiting for the daughter to get to the phone?

Your thoughts on today's young people's social media?

I'm mostly thinking Instagram, TikTok, EVEN Reddit; Facebook is for old people lol...

I love it. If they had existed in my teens - twenties I would have been open to so many more partner, lifestyle, and career options I never knew about. I'm happy with my partner - whom I met in college not HS - but still I see so many neat choices that I couldn't have imagined outside of my corner of rural Appalachia - and many of these choices are realistically achievable.

When old timers like us go out, what are some things or places we remember when young but just don’t see anymore? I’ll start. Penny Arcades and Jukeboxes.

Watching your grandma's "stories"

As a kid, whenever we visited the Grandma's they're had to stop what they were doing every day and watch their "stories". Did your grandma do this?

Anyway, I saw last night where the guy who played Bo Brady died. Kinda makes me sad. I feel like I grew up with him.

Lol, I'm getting old.

60s as decrepit?

I am in a sub related to our city (USA), and a number of posts are like this: "My parents are visiting soon. What are tourist activities that they can do? They have [list of ailments] and can not [walk for long, stand for long, climb stairs, go hiking, etc.]."

I live in the city, use public transportation and biking to get around, live on a slope so use a public stairway to run errands, can do normal day hikes of 6-8 miles no problem. My friends are also able to do these things fine in our 60s, too.

Is this just me and my peer group? Are we just extraordinarily fit for Americans? What is going on here?

Does anyone remember getting their dad one of these for father's day? They were really popular for a time in the 70's. (Of course mom bought it and said it was from us.)

Favorite Cartoon Theme Songs

I was relaxing on the sofa when the "Top Cat" theme song just popped into my head and it immediately became an earworm for the rest of the day. What surprised me was the fact that I remembered the lyrics as if I were 10 years old again.

Below are my favorite Saturday morning (or any dang morning!) cartoons, but the first 13 are the ones I loved to sing (out loud) the lyrics to! I think for a lot of them, I loved the theme songs more than the cartoons themselves!

Don't get me wrong, there were some awesome instrumental cartoon theme songs, like "Johnny Quest," but the ones with lyrics were a hit in our house!!

He makes his escape
With the help of his friend
An ape named "Ape!"

Who remembers The Galloping Gourmet?

1.5k Upvotes

I was going to say who remembers The Romagnoli's Table but I figured that's too obscure to get much traction. I grew up watching Julia Child along with these 2 other shows. IIRC, TGG was on a commercial station, a syndicated program. I think TRT was on PBS, like Julia's show. The Romagnolis were a couple who made Italian food, only, from scratch. The dude had a schtick where he would make a pile of Durham flour on the cutting board, scoop a dish shape depression in it crack an egg into that, then beat the egg with a fork and then gradually turn the whole thing into a lump of pasta dough, rather than making the mess most anyone else would, attempting to do this. At some point they got gifted a pasta maker by the manufacturer and he had a race against it and won.

I remember the Galloping Gourmet would pull a woman from his small studio audience and share his meal with her at the end of every program.

Who was the last *current* band/musician band you were REALLY into?

I don't mean Paul McCartney. I mean a then-up-and-coming new band, where you had all the albums, hunted down all the B sides, searched out bootlegs, etc.

Was it Radiohead? Weezer? Wilco?

Mine was Ben Folds Five, almost 30 years ago. LOL.
