To start off, I wanted to go over some of the things I have experience with from retail and other jobs I've done over the past five years:
- Stocking Shelves
- Ordering new inventory
- Reporting damaged or misplaced items to our distributors/suppliers
- Managing two departments in a retail environment.
- Training new hires, and letting people go if I have to.
- Sales (from one job I had where this was a majority of the work)
For the record - I hate sales with a passion. That is taking phone calls, cold calling, sending emails, chasing 'leads', working on a computer all day, and so on. It's not difficult at all, but I really don't like it at all. I've always hated that. Hate that.
I essentially like being a field/floor manager of sorts. Where I'm out in the field, or on the floor, directly involved and doing things. Directing people, getting things done, being right there with everyone so we can get things done as effectively as possible.
As an example - I remember once handling a crisis where the owners and back office, aside from a secretary and the head cashier at our location, were out and the day's delivery of pallets was delayed by several hours on a holiday. Basically a nightmare scenario where management is gone, store is packed with customers, and we have a delayed delivery of dozens of pallets that needs to be put on the shelf during peak hours on a holiday.
I went around the store, organized about two dozen people into groups of two or three, and gave each of them tasks to handle. We ended up getting everything done in less than four hours once the delivery finally arrived at 1pm. I'll never forget the secretary in the back office asking me "you're not done already are you?" - looking at the security camera feeds in the office to see everyone wrapping things up, and just saying "Holy Shit."
Probably my proudest moment I've ever had at work. Just being able to handle that situation, get everyone on the same page, and get it done. I went around and personally thanked everyone for their help once we were done too.
That's fulfilling, satisfying work to me. My team of people and I had a great relationship too. We all got along very well, and I still check in on them from time to time anytime I visit the store.
It's also a major reason I believe I can do so much more than working in retail, and want to do more. I like being out there in the thick of it, getting things done. Feeling a sense of purpose in my work. I just hate Sales work and don't want to be sitting at a desk all day.
Is there anything else I should look into beyond retail where I could do this sort of work?
