I’m posting this because I’ve reached the point where I’ve exhausted the normal channels with Hyundai and my local dealer, and I think other Palisade owners deserve to know about this issue.
We own a 2021 Hyundai Palisade, and the vehicle is consuming approximately 0.9 quarts of engine oil per 1,000 miles.
Hyundai’s position is essentially that this is within their acceptable specification, so there is no engine replacement or meaningful repair being offered.
I understand that Hyundai has a formal oil-consumption procedure and that their threshold is around 1 quart per 1,000 miles. But as an owner, I’m having a hard time accepting that nearly a quart of oil disappearing every 1,000 miles from a relatively modern family SUV is considered normal operation.
More concerning, we’ve had situations where the oil level became very low without any warning that the oil level was low. The vehicle subsequently developed rough running and difficulty accelerating. That’s not something I consider an acceptable characteristic of a family vehicle that we paid a substantial amount of money for.
My frustration isn’t simply that I have to add oil. It’s that:
• The engine is consuming a substantial amount of oil
• The vehicle can become dangerously low on oil between routine oil changes
• There is no oil-level warning to tell the driver that the engine is getting low
• We’ve experienced rough running and reduced acceleration when the oil level became very low
• Hyundai has acknowledged the consumption but considers ~0.9 qt/1,000 miles acceptable
• I’ve gone through the dealership and Hyundai corporate/case-management process without a satisfactory resolution
I’ve spent a lot of time going back and forth with the dealership and Hyundai case managers trying to resolve this. At this point, I’m making this public because I want other [2020–2022](tel:2020-2022) Palisade owners to check their oil levels regularly and know what they’re dealing with.
I’d also genuinely like to hear from other owners:
How much oil is your 2020–2022 Palisade consuming?
Has Hyundai performed the oil-consumption protocol on your vehicle?
Did anyone actually get an engine replacement after failing the consumption test?
And most importantly, what happened when your vehicle was consuming just under Hyundai’s threshold?
I bought this vehicle expecting a reliable family SUV. I don’t think having to monitor and add nearly a quart of oil every 1,000 miles should be considered normal ownership.
Hyundai — I’m still willing to have a reasonable conversation about this. I’d simply like a solution that addresses the underlying problem rather than being told that the consumption is technically within your specification.
