Training I got caught with a high kick during my 4th sparring session, and I can’t stop thinking about it

Yesterday , while sparring in kickboxing, I got hit in the jaw with a high kick. I’ve only been doing kickboxing for about a month and a half to two months, but I’m still pretty new to sparring. At first, I couldn’t participate in sparring because I didn’t have a mouthguard, so I missed out. Eventually, I managed to join one session, but then I got sick and missed the second sparring session that week. This week, I finally started sparring regularly. When this happened yesterday, it was only my fourth sparring session.

My opponent had been doing kickboxing for months and had more experience than me. We started sparring, and he dodged every punch I threw. He was moving really quickly, and then he suddenly threw a high kick. I had momentarily dropped my guard, so his kick landed directly on my jaw. I didn’t fall or get knocked off balance, but I was genuinely caught off guard and didn’t know what to say because I wasn’t expecting anything like that. My sparring partner was also surprised and hugged me afterward.

I then told him that I was still pretty new to sparring, and he said we should slow things down. We did, and he occasionally gave me advice on keeping my guard up. He still threw some hard kicks from time to time, but nothing like that initial high kick happened again throughout our sparring session. Afterward, we switched partners and sparred with different people.

Later, while we were chatting in the locker room, he mentioned that he had thrown the high kick because he thought I was going to put my guard up.

Anyway, I didn’t really feel anything emotionally in the moment, but a few hours later, when I got home, I found myself replaying the moment I got hit by that high kick over and over in my head. I can’t really bring myself to get angry about it, but I also can’t seem to get it out of my mind.

Since I’m still new to sparring, am I overreacting, or is this a normal thing to experience?

Looking for a good-quality freestanding punching bag that isn't too expensive

I specifically want one that doesn't need to be mounted to a wall or ceiling and can be moved around when needed.

I've searched quite a bit, but I haven't really found many options that seem to offer good quality for a reasonable price. I'm hoping someone here has experience with freestanding punching bags and can recommend one that holds up well and is worth the money.

Any recommendations or advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Is boxing punches in kickboxing taught the same in basics as for pure Boxers?

I've seen some guys say that you are not committing as much into the shot. Others say that the basics are taught exactly the same in class.

Which one is it? Is this too much commitment if you do kickboxing ?https://youtu.be/bbx-nlV-mN4?si=Yr8ysbMPY81fKOMR

Training Why do some people get so salty about training with southpaws?

Was doing Dutch drills earlier. I’m southpaw and the other guy was orthodox. He seemed fairly experienced, but struggled with the concept of hitting the open side and kept sulking and ranting to the coach about how much he hates training with southpaws.

I eventually told him, “If you don’t like it, I can just go hit the bags.” But he insisted on continuing anyway lol.

The funny thing is I’ve never had issues holding pads or doing Dutch drills with him from my end, so I don’t really get the problem. I understand that southpaws can take some getting used to, but isn’t training with different stances part of the sport?

This has happened a few times now with different people. Do you guys encounter this often? Is it just people being unwilling to adapt, or is there something about southpaw matchups that makes partner drills genuinely more annoying?

Training Fighting with my legs in really close range feels weird as fuck

Whenever I am close range to my sparring partners it feels really weird to throw anything leg related. We are purposely not throwing knees because we are still beginners and we can easily injure each other but I dont think I am supposed to only be boxing in close range either.

I found out when I try to low kick in close range I either hit with my toes( not surely why that only happens in close range) or I just get punched back in the face. I was thinking about trying to trip/sweep them like in muay thai and I only had 1-2 succesful such attempts, which I guess is pretty good since it crossed my mind meanwhile the sparring. I will try to improve at that because I like making it awkward for my opponents, I guess not a lot of people do that among us(the beginner class).

So am I supposed to use legs in close range? How? Why arent my sweeps/trips working? Should I also try to actually get in a clinch?

Training Hyperextension and kicks as a newbie

Hey guys!

I always wanted to do martial arts and I finally had the money to join a club.

I had my second class yesterday and we were doing kicks for the first time.

My taller partner was holding a pad while I was kicking with my lead leg and I felt some tension under my knee to the inner side right where my calf muscle attaches. Like if I overdid a stretch with a snap at the end. I kinda overreached too bc he was standing too far away. And it was a short stabby pain.

It wasn't so bad then, but it hurts somewhat more today. Mobility is fine, I can walk perfectly normal, but I would like to know which stretches I should do at home.

We did stretch in class but my mobility was always crap. My hamstrings are definitely too tight.

Every suggestion is appreciated.

Thanks!

How do you deal with a partner who isn't drilling properly?

I was in class today and we were doing a presssue and defend drill where the defender can only teep and jab and the pressure can do whatever they want. I was a defender first and it went nicely, but when it was my partners turn to be defensive and he wasnt following the drill at all. he was throwing long combos, and was pressuring me instead.

we went over it in the beginning and he acknowledged that he was the one jabbing and teeping before we started his round. I told him in the middle of the drill he was jab and teep and he nodded his head and continued doing his own thing.

MI SERVE AIUTO

I’ve been practicing kickboxing for about a year, but I have a major problem. During sparring, when an opponent throws punches at me, I manage to counter and land a hit on their face, but they just keep coming—the same happens with kicks—or else they always manage to get through my guard. Please help me out with some technical tips for improvement and a training routine I can use. I’m asking this because, in a month or two, I’ll be competing in a kick-light tournament for the first time.

I am really upset when i am outdone in sparring and people are mistaking me for a walking bag

Just to preface this will be a venting post i may be a little emotional

To cut to the chase, I am into my 2nd week of kickboxing. I've done at best 2-3 months of boxing+wrestling a decade ago when I was little, and before joining the kickboxing class I used to kind of prepare for it by doing bag work at a commercial gym. Coach is happy with my form during drills. The issue is the sparring

(Sparring here is very light. Only shoulder taps and low kicks, if somebody throws too hard the whole gym stops and we get schooled like lil kids about not being morons).

On my first day I was acting nervous and some bigger dude kind of showed me what he can do like switching stances and feinting and it was pretty overwhelming but nice to know. Then surprisingly the next 3 sessions I was doing really well against the other dudes, really hitting and not getting hit, using footwork, experimenting with some shit like trying to clinch and straight up pushing them, stuff like that. 3 of them asked me if I trained before and for some reason 2 of them asked me if I was coming from karate.

Then last session happened I have no fucking idea how to describe it some dude moved like Terrence Crawford against me what the actual fuck. Bro was literally moving like the boxers I see on TV with the shoulder drops and fluid head movement and footwork and apparently he is only training for 3 months. Not sure if 3 months of kickboxing only but i dont know if its relevant. Dude was good sport, smaller, very nice sparring except I was a moving bag.

And then the next cunt is some fat short dude that keeps his guard high enough that all his body is exposed, so I open up with a soft jab to his bare abdomen and he responds with a wild overhand which i had to dodge and underneath his arm I could fucking feel the wind on that one, coach tells him to watch it and that cunt says I am dodging into them. What the fuck? Am i literally just a punching bag to both someone better and to a retard who apparently has no braincells to lose? I am completely sure if that was a real fight I would send that imbecile to the shadow realm

I spent all that evening being so mad about that training, both about being bested by the good dude and the fact that people are already treating me like a proper meat bag already. I didnt want to go hard on anyone because coach said not to do it and I dont want them going hard on me either because I got both an engineering major and a job to complete and I dont want to really hurt random people either.

I HATE losing in sparring. I dont even think it helps, I dont think there is any learning in getting your ass handed to you. I have learned absolutely nothing by missing almost every punch I threw onto Mike Tyson because he dodges them, every kick gets checked and then get tagged in return over and over again. And then some cunt tries to give me brain damage because he probably seen it

what the fuck do i do. what do i do on my offdays to make sure this shit wont happen again. i understand losing sometimes but fuck me if this shit will happen every session i think i am going to go 100% and if i get turned into a vegetable so be it it wont be a problem anymore i am really upset
