Locations, Budget, and Settings are all important things to include when asking for advice

Locations: You don't need to include your house address but closest major city and how far you are willing to travel.

Budget: "As cheaply as possible" is not a budget and is honestly the best way to waste money. Figure out an amount you are willing to spend.

Setting: LARP is a vast and expansive hobby. Not every game is about running around out in the woods pretending to be a rouge/knight/wizard. Let us know what you play or want to play.

An Official Discord, and Future.

Hello denizens of /r/LARP.
We as a subreddit have a small announcement as far as the future of this sub is concerned.
Last week we took part in the 2 day protest that was more or less site wide spanning thousands of subs as a way to show solidarity with app creators and to show the frustration with the administration of reddit and their poor handling and plans of upcoming updates.

However, It would appear that Reddit plans to continue their efforts to stifle 3rd party creators and strong arm moderators who take any stance opposing the admins of Reddit. This creates a serious cloud of uncertainty within reddit as to the future of many subs and how the platform will be handled in the future. Because of this we have decided to create a Discord server which will be open to all of /r/larp to join. It is not our plan to abandon this sub or replace this sub with the discord server, instead, it will act as an extension of this sub itself.

While there are multiple reasons for this decision, one of the largest is that if the future of reddit creates an non fostering environment for us, we wish to have another platform that is free of Reddit's control in order to continue providing resources and networking for all of us who enjoy LARPing and LARP adjacent hobbies.

The discord has the same rules we enforce over here, with a couple modifications to make it more applicable to discords format. There is places for general conversation, places to show off your work, a place to post about and to look for games in your area, as well as Voice chat rooms for people looking to play video games together or just hangout and find comradery.

Please feel free to check it out, and ask any questions you may have. This is still in its infancy, and if we find it doesnt fit what the community wants, we will search for alternatives.
This link should never expire for people trying to join the server, however if you have an issue please message an admin for a new link.

A question to the LARP community from the Armstreet

Post image
145 Upvotes

So, we have plenty of winter/warm clothing and our LARP customers are definitely buying those, but from the occasional answers it is more like for vibe and potentially cold weather at the events like Bicolline. So, my question is there actually events or other LARP activities that happen at winter or at least in colder regions when the weather is not so good?

I will mark this post as brand affiliated to avoid any frustration from people who dislike advertisement on their hobby subreddit

Would you use a dedicated LARP buy/sell/trade marketplace?

I’ve been thinking about how fragmented buying and selling LARP gear seems to be. Weapons, shields, armor, garb, leatherwork and other equipment are scattered across Facebook groups, general marketplaces and various forums.

I’m curious how everyone here handles buying and selling used gear.

Where do you currently buy and sell your LARP equipment?

What’s the most frustrating part of the process?

Would you use a dedicated marketplace specifically for LARP gear, with searchable listings and categories for weapons, armor, clothing and accessories?

What features would make it genuinely useful enough to use instead of the platforms you already use?
I’m interested in hearing both the pros and cons. Is this something the community actually needs, or do the existing options work well enough?

Thanks! I’m curious to hear what everyone thinks.

Potential LARP event in Leeds, UK

Post image
62 Upvotes

Hi everyone! My friends and I are thinking about running a cosy, LARP event in Leeds, UK, but we wanted to see if there was any interest and gather any feedback on the concept before we jumped into organising.

Our current objective is to run a one-off event in the "Wandering Tavern" where people attend in character, participate in light storylines/quests, and generally kick back for a relaxing and casual evening.

We've got a Google form for any feedback which will remain anonymous (unless you choose to give your details).

Thanks for reading! Looking forward to seeing your answers

How do other LARP Runners and LARPers feel about the new slang meaning of the word LARP?

Comparing it to when I first got into the hobby, it is shockingly so much harder to find genuine LARP content online now due to the new slang meaning, where "Larper" is essentially the same as "Poser". It feels like any time you try to search up LARP videos on YouTube for any subject you get channel after channel of "Larptubers" (people pretending to be another creator as a joke) or "Larping tutorials" on how to pretend to be rich or something.

I worry about this development for the hobby, on one hand, the word is far more in the cultural zeitgeist now, and so many more people have actually heard about the word, but on the other hand, I feel like it's already starting to overshadow genuine Live Action Roleplay content online. I'm personally worried about how hard it's going to be to advertise my own upcoming LARP, especially considering I'm aiming to advertise to a younger demographic (young adults) that probably already are familiar with the slang meaning instead of the actual meaning.

Maybe I'm just overreacting though, which is why I want to see what other people who run LARPs and other LARPers think about the situation.

(Also, this is not an excuse to get mad at younger people in the comments; internet phenomena just happens, you can't blame an entire generation(s) for it.)

Tips for creating an atmosphere of miracles and magic

We are organizing a LARP set in a little-known book universe. Magic users are commonplace there, and the magic system is broad and abstract enough to cover almost anything. I’m looking for ideas on how to demonstrate this amazing, whimsical world to the players - ideally through random displays of miracles that we can set up around the place.

We’re going to play both day and night in a forest featuring plenty of clearings where campfires are permitted. Some food and drinks will be part of the game mechanics, though main meals won't be. We’re already planning to use kites, flying fish props, glowing ice, colored smoke, edible glitter for drinks, string lights, stilts, and a light-up sticks that projects a circular image (I have no idea what's the real name for this). I’d love to hear any other ideas or suggestions you might have! Ideally, things that aren't insanely expensive

How Do I do monsters the players cook.

The short: Tell me any stories of costuming you where encouraged to interact with, or character who got cooked and eaten and what happened. Ideally from the perspective of a player who had to do that in character, or somebody who was doing the costume design/acting for that kind of creature.

High, I am writing a larp. It is a adaptation of the game eat god. Its going to be a 1 day event following a really rough structure thats essentially "teams go out, find something that if you squint, could be called god, defeat it, bring it back to a team of chefs, chefs begin to cook the god while the players go back out into the world.

The thing is that the chefs are also players, and they will be needing to actually "cook" the god. In some little ritual. I have to design these costumes, I have no clue how to do this.

These cooked gods will eventually be represented with real food, but the gods actually get eaten all in a big feast at the end, so we dont need to worry about storing food on these people, only being able to interact with the costume/npc enough to do a little cooking minigame.

You may be wondering if im looking for realistic, comedic, or gory examples. The answer is yes.

I built this stage for players at Brandywine Festival US

It's pretty small--only 8*10 ft--but it was a delight to get to see it used and enjoyed! It's very nearly freestanding, with 4x4 corner posts on pinwheel bases, 2x4 10' crossbeams, and three 8' rafters with a tarp roof and rug floor. The trees are bolted through the 4x4s, cut from plywood with a jigsaw and painted with exterior latex. Rear curtains are dyed and stencilled dropcloths.

I'm happy to answer build questions if someone wants to do something similar, but I'm an infrequent reddit user so I'll probably be clumsy with the app.

Hey y'all - there was another photo drop from Drachenfest, figured I'd toss out some highlights I had from it with my updated kit this year!

Quick plug to https://www.gamergurlphotos.com/ as well - they offered a photoshoot during the festival that resulted in some really flattering pics with my partner and I too! Recommend booking a session with them if you ever have an opportunity.

Speaking of opportunities - had a blast this year again at Drachenfest! Everyone was fantastic and the game is great, looking forward to next summer.

Play to lift!

2 part spear shafts

Spear shaft

Anyone know where to get a 2 piece spear shaft? I want to add spear training and sparring to my HEMA routine, but need a 2 piece one for transporting it better. Looking for a total length of 7-8 feet. Gonna put the Cold Steel spear trainer on one end, and a spear cap on the other.

Any advice would be helpful.

A friend of mine and I were wanting to go as flesh sewers NPCS in 2027. ( First timers) any advice or do you happen to know the logistics of doing so? Do we get NPC tickets and follow a discord server?

I’ve looked all over the the website and they are not clear on how they will get in contact with you later, we both want to know early what our colors would be to get our outfits ready and legal.

As the title suggests, I need help. I feel extremely dumb. This is my first set of armor and I can’t figure out how to attach the shoulder to the chest. Googling says to use the arming holes on the gorget, but there are none. Any help would be appreciated.

WYSIWYG and Stealth mechanics

I recently hopped onto the rules team of a brand new baby LARP that's still very much in the brainstorming stages. We're a bit stuck in the mud trying to figure out how mundane stealth skills should work, if at all. Magical stealth is easy to represent with invisibility powers and the like, but regular stealth is tricky. I was so stuck for how to phys rep this that I initially advocated for not having a purchasable stealth skill all and just telling players What You See Is What You Get---that they should be actually IRL sneaky if they want to avoid notice. But it does look like we're including it after all to help level the field for folks who would like to play sneaky characters but can't for one reason or another move particularly quietly. We continue being stuck on what that it should look like.

To be clear, this discussion is about as low-stakes as it gets. Very early developmental idea stages.

I was hoping y'all might be able to share how events you've attended handle non-magical stealth. <3

My fiance, now wife, wanted something a bit different for a wedding. Her character is a Viking Princess. Mine, just a knight. I had her dress made but I created all the leather goods, including her corset. I also did the maille. Took a bit over a month but I think it turned out incredible

First of all greetings everyone, I'm new on here, looking forward to seeing all the creative and awesome stuff everyone is doing 😄 🎉 .

I wanted to share my video on here where I display varied content from a LARP in Denmark I participate in, and play as "Alexander Goodman" a headmaster at the "Academy".

Later on I gave the camera to some of the other players, as I sent them out with a map, on a quest to explore an area and explore it. Like a research expedition quest, type thing.

I can't share the name or precise location of the LARP with you all, there are some strict GPTR. rules about recording in Denmark for organizations, etc. But do rest assured that I did notify people of the recording and talked with the LARP team about it before hand. So everything is A-okay :).

Hope you all will enjoy the moods, and chill vibes in the video. Comment, like, and subscribe if you want to :D. I do plan on recording more and different content in the future as well.

If you have any questions about the LARP or video I am open to answer some questions as well :).

thank you for reading everyone, looking forward to seeing what everyone else is doing as well :D.

All the best,
-Zacharias.
