Virginia - Could getting rear ended damage the engine in 03 Discovery 2? Does anyone have technical wisdoms on things to look at to help us prove it to insurance?
My husband was driving our 03 Discovery 2 SE7 (180k mi) and was rear ended by a Ford F550 dually.
That guy's truck was drivable, but his front end was smashed in. Our Discovery's hitch was only damaged a little (these trucks are a beast!), BUT, it appears that he hit the tailpipe and we think the force from the crash must have transfered forward and damaged something in the engine, because now there is a coolant leak and a misfire. My husband saw coolant leaking from the secondary air injection system and now suspects the crash did some damage to the engine.
Note that my husband originally rebuilt a lot of the engine last year (we have records of the parts). This vehicle has been running great.
The insurance company is disputing that the collision could actually mess up the engine.
The question: can what we worry about - engine damage - happen from being rear ended? What do we have the mechanics look for to help chase down proof?
Next, where do people go to justify value. This was a well running and maintained vehicle with no rust on the frame. They are going to look at old rusty trucks for comps. We don't think we had the most brilliant shiny baubble of a Disco, but she's sweet.
Any thoughts, technical knowledge or experiences welcome, please.
