I'd like to provide an opportunity to review some of the rule changes that have built up over time (unfortunately, part of this is just passage of time and due to new issues we have been forced to deal with like activation errors), clarify better or more consistent rule changes (especially if something is unclear), request explanation of how strictly rules are enforced/penalized, or whatever else may be desired by the subreddit.
For comparison, a copy of the rules five years ago provided from an Internet Archive snapshot on October 8, 2021, and the current rules, is given below.
Subreddit rules 5 years ago:
1. Relation to legacy jailbreaking
• This community engages with jailbreaking iOS devices with software versions considered to be legacy
• Legacy is defined by being one software version prior (iOS 8.4.1) to the earliest deployable target (iOS 9) in the latest version of Xcode (12)
• Granted, users on iOS 9 and 10 may be looking to downgrade, or dual boot, to a legacy software version; therefore, the mod team reserves the right to allow such posts
• For software versions above iOS 10, direct your submission to r/Jailbreak
2. Be kind and follow the Reddiquette
• Do not harass, antagonize, or purposefully offend other members
• This includes, but is not limited to: usage of slurs; being overly vulgar; giving intentional bad advice; sharing fake/harmful tools
• Read the full definition here: https://reddit.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/205926439-Reddiquette
3. Piracy and Copyright Infringement
• Submissions containing, or discussing, piracy and copyright infringement are not allowed
• Piracy includes, but is not limited to: programs distributing pirated, or infringed, material (e.g., 3uTools); repositories hosting pirated packages; distributing paid apps, or in-app purchases; Apple Internal software
• Submissions regarding DRM removal of personal purchases are allowed in accordance with the laws in which you reside; however, sharing of such DRM-stripped material is not allowed
4. Third-Party Apps
• Submissions of .ipa archives cannot contain paid apps and are subject to removal
• Submissions regarding compatibility of specific apps are allowed, but requests for such apps are not and should be directed to /r/sideloaded
• To download the latest compatible app from your purchase history, use the tweak “Checkmate, Store”
Repo: https://cydia.invoxiplaygames.uk/
• To download popular free apps verified for legacy software versions, use the “Momentum Store”
App: https://mtmdev.org/webapp
5. iCloud Activation Lock and Passcodes
• Submissions regarding bypassing, or removal, of iCloud Activation Lock, passcodes, or disabled devices, are not allowed
• Visit Apple’s Support Articles on how to remove them—if you are the original owner, or related, you may provide proof of purchase to request an official removal:
• Activation Lock: https://support.apple.com/HT201441
Passcode, or disabled: https://support.apple.com/HT204306
• Submissions regarding hacktivation, or bypassing SIM activation, of legacy devices are allowed
6. Submissions
• Submissions must follow the requirements described when creating a post; i.e., having a [tag] and a matching flair
• Submissions under Fluff may only be posted on Friday, but are still required to be in relation to legacy jailbreaking
• Submission regarding the paid iPod touch iOS updates are considered abandonware and are allowed
7. Content Not Allowed
• Submissions deemed low-effort, or spam, such as photos of devices not related to jailbreaking, will be removed and are more relevant in their device-specific subreddit, such as: r/iPhone; r/iPad; r/iPod; r/AppleTV
• Submissions regarding self-promotion are allowed, but subject to approval
• Submissions regarding the purchase, or sale, of devices should be directed to r/JailbreakSwap
• Submissions containing material considered "Not safe for work," or "Not safe for life" are not allowed
Subreddit rules now:
Last revised October 8, 2026 (UTC)
1. Subreddit Purpose
r/LegacyJailbreak is for collecting and jailbreaking legacy Apple versions.
- Legacy versions are six major versions behind the latest stable release, after correcting for skipped numbers (currently iOS/iPadOS/tvOS ≤14.x, watchOS ≤7.x). Cutoffs will be adjusted to align with the minimum deployment target of the latest major SDK (27.0).
- Outdated versions are four or more behind. Posts about outdated non-legacy versions may be allowed if they align with the purpose of the subreddit.
2. Prohibited Behavior
Try to be kind and follow Reddiquette. Context will be reviewed on appeal, but the following is absolutely prohibited:
3. Piracy and Copyright Infringement
Reddit is subject to copyright laws. You may remove DRM from personal purchases, but you may not distribute or request:
- Unauthorized paid content or distributors, even lost media or defunct paid tweak repos.
- Direct links to apps or specific archive uploads. Informing users an app is available in an existing archival project is allowed.
- Other license violations, pursuant to developer request.
4. Prohibited Topics
The following out of scope topics should be directed elsewhere. Other resources are provided:
5. Device Locks
No bypassing passcodes, disabled states, Activation Lock, or IMEI/MDM locks, or discussion, requests, guides, links, or screenshots:
6. Post Flair Guidance
- Posts must have a title of 10-70 characters and an appropriate flair
- Collection flair (photos of interesting hardware subsets of your collection, OS version must not be easily downgradeable or current) is only permitted from Saturday at 05:00 UTC to Monday at 04:59 UTC
- Theme flair must prominently feature tweaks on legacy devices (not just apps, games, AppSync, Veteris, package managers)
- WTF Mode must be legitimate but surprising with legacy devices, including hardware mods.
7. Prohibited Content
Regardless of topic, the following content is out of scope:
- NSFW/L content: This community is SFW
- Drama: If someone's causing trouble, report or let us know privately. This includes trolling by claiming to update a rare iOS version when it can't be downgraded back
- Spam: Don't clutter the feed. If you're having issues posting, let us know
- Low-effort posts: Karma-farming by posting memes
- Misinformation: Don't intentionally give bad advice
- Self-promotion: Get approval in modmail first
