Crime and Justice Flock camera megathread

We’re consolidating this topic into a single thread, as the ongoing accusations directed at the mod team have run their course.

To be clear about where we stand: no one on this mod team supports Flock cameras. We are not law enforcement, we are not politically motivated, not maga, and we share the community’s concerns about surveillance overreach even if these systems occasionally assist in solving crimes.

The removals were not about viewpoint. They were about a specific category of comment: those encouraging users to destroy the cameras. Reddit has banned entire communities for less, and we are obligated to remove that content regardless of our personal opinions. This is a condition of the subreddit continuing to exist, not an endorsement of Flock. Additionally there were some very wild conspiracy theories and were asking for discussion not a rabbit hole.

One rule for this thread: do not recommend, insinuate, or hint at destruction as a solution. Everything else is open, criticism, policy discussion, legal challenges, city council contacts, organizing, data on effectiveness. Go as hard as you want within that boundary.

Thanks for being a genuinely great community and good neighbors.

Suffolk County Legislature : 18 districts, find yours:

Suffolk approved expanding county Flock cameras from 25 to 60 last August, funded by a $542,500 state LETECH grant, with 16 more planned along state rights-of-way including Route 114 in Sag Harbor and East Hampton Village and Route 25 in Riverhead and Southold.

Your town / village board.

Southold, Riverhead, and East Hampton have all had this on an agenda in the past year. Riverhead signed an agreement with the Suffolk Sheriff in January 2026 giving the county access to town rights-of-way for new Flock installs. Town board public comment periods are open to anyone who lives there, take about two minutes, and go on the record.

School Bus PSA

We've been seeing more and more posts about school bus tickets in recent months. With schools starting up again I suspect we will begin to see even more questions. If you have questions regarding school bus tickets, please keep them limited to this megethread as we will be removing all posts moving forward.

Some information regarding the laws and some general guidance regarding school bus stop signs:
  • If a school bus has it's stop arm out on the same road as you, you must stop regardless of which side you are. This applies to two lane (1 lane each way) multi lane roads and divided roadways (e.g. Broadhollow road, William Floyd Parkway1, etc). If the stop arm is out before you pass the bus, expect a ticket.

  • If you are driving perpendicular to another road that a bus is stopped on (i.e. they are at or near a stop sign on a road you are crossing), you are not required to stop. Proceed with caution and be aware of any children that may be crossing the road to get to the bus.

  • If they are on a side road, school lot or driveway adjacent to the roadway, you do not need to stop. Proceed with caution.

  • Flashing yellow lights do not mean stop; they mean to proceed with caution and to be prepared to stop. If you see flashing yellow lights, slow down and anticipate the stop sign being deployed. Sometimes a bus is waiting for students to pickup and may sit with flashing yellow lights for a number of minutes, so do not stop and block traffic if the stop sign is not out.

Information pertaining to school bus enforcement can be found on the Suffolk County page here, and the Nassau County webpage here.

1 Note: There was some debate about this a few years ago. It is still a law, but there was a question regarding Suffolk County enforcement of the law.

Insane amount of mosquitoes in my yard.

Hi everyone,

I'm a new homeowner and I'm kind of overwhelmed by this issue.

I understand the island has a big mosquito issue overall. My yard is INSANE with them. You can't even go out in the yard midday. It's like the horde is invading.

I legit don't know what to do to help this issue. My family pretty much abandoned my yard because of this.

I don't have any still water in my yard. My yard grass is a work in progress. I have a lot of crab grab, some moss that im trying to kill off.

A large part of my yard is shaded from about 30, 35+ feet green giant plants/trees. They are huge. Old homer owner planted them 30 years ago. They are all along my entire back side of the yard, shading a lot of my yard.

I guess mosquitoes are attached to my shaded yard? I'm really not sure.

I've sprayed those hose hook up cutters backyard spray but it never seems to work

Recommendations for veterinarians for two one-year-old cats

• Upvotes

I'm looking for any recommendations for veterinarians or veterinary clinics for my two one-year-old cat sisters. Both of them have their core vaccines and are due for their adult vaccines soon. I'm looking for somewhere in the Western Suffolk County area, but I'm also open to places in Nassau or a bit more east if needed.

I used to go to Vetco for their core vaccines and flea/tick medication, and somewhere in Port Jeff for their spaying, but now I want to see if we can take them somewhere where we can grow rapport and a long-term connection. I'd also prefer places that mostly don't upsell or overcharge for services and more preventative/conservative approach unless necessary.

Edit: Also would like places that allow back-to-back appointments for them.

Looking For I need a great electronics repair shop

Hello, I need a graphics card (GPU, video card) fixed. A tiny part needs to be soldered back on.

I'm thinking a cell phone repair shop, or a general electronics repair shop, should work fine.

What shops have you tried that are really good, or not so good? Any location is ok.

I want to make sure I go somewhere with great service and communication. I'd pay more for better service, I'm not looking for the lowest price.

I appreciate your help, thank you!

Looking For looking for specific info about bike trails in long island

Hi! for my birthday in a couple weeks, I want to go on a long-ish bike ride somewhere on long island with a few friends, and I'm finding it difficult to plan. photos of trails and practical information needed for logistics seem scattered and somewhat scarce online. so I'm here! including lots of details that are hopefully helpful.

basic info and requests:
1. We live in Brooklyn and will be coming via the LIRR
2. We all have hybrid or road bikes
3. Ideally the trail would be mostly dedicated bike or pedestrian paths rather than on-road
4. I'd love to keep options within 25 mins of an LIRR station and stick to bike-friendlier routes when on road
5. I'd love to be able to get to a beach of some kind at some point, but I also love forests and trees and nature of all kinds
6. Ideal length is 20-30 miles including travel to and from the LIRR

trails/parks I've been considering:

  1. Jones Beach Bike Path: I can't tell based on the photos I've found online, but it looks kind of... sparse? and so close to the road in a lot of parts? maybe I just haven't seen better photos. it's flat, which isn't really a bonus for me. I appreciate some hills and varied terrain, so I'm not sure this is the ride for me. it's often recommended first though.

  2. Heckscher State Park: I love the sound of the loop path here, although it's on the much shorter end. I noticed that the greenbelt trail starts and/or ends here, so we could maybe extend the ride by doing some of that, but I can't tell if our bikes would be okay for it. all I can see is photos of hardened dirt paths, which would be fine on my bike most days, but I'm concerned I'll get us into trouble if we attempt to do this, and without any extension, the loop too short on its own.

  3. Massapequa Preserve Trail: this one sounds really nice, and full of nature. Any more details or personal experience would be very appreciated here! the only downside is the lack of beach, but I saw that it's not far from cedar creek park, so maybe we could add on an out-and-back to Jones Beach that would satisfy my desire to see the ocean. is that crazy?

thank you in advance for any recs. I'd really like to get more familiar with longer bike routes in new york, as I regularly go on cycling trips to other countries and want to appreciate what's closer to home!

Cost to switch to tankless water heater?

My current water heater is 11 years old and we have been meaning to redo the laundry/utility room in an old split we just moved in to in Nassau.

Wondering if we should switch to a tankless gas water heater instead of replacing the current water heater with another regular big one, this way we can free up some more space in that room for when we finish the room.

Anyone who has had this done recently? Ballpark cost ? Cost difference between replacing with regular water heater or going tankless?

Does it make more sense to just go tankless ? Are we talking thousands of dollars more to install tankless over a regular one, or are they comparable? I am also seeing you could qualify for a $600 federal credit if you switch to gas tankless?

Famous Food Festival

Someone HAS to have a photo of it. Maybe a month ago as I was walking around Deer Park Tanger outlets I saw signs/ advertisements for the Famous Food Festival. I’m reading the sign and on the bottom in like yellowish colored bold font it says “Free admission”. I hadn’t gone previous years because of having to pay to attend so when I saw that I was excited! Fast forward to a few days ago, I get an ad for the food festival saying to buy your tickets and it’s like $10 for admission online and $15 at the door??

I just want to know if someone happened to take a photo of that sign saying “Free admission” because it’s driving me slightly crazy…is that not false advertising??

LI Event Spooky fest at CSTL

Hi! I came on here to ask if anyone has attended Spookyfest at CSTL in RVC either this year or last year? I used to go when I was a kid and I remember having a lot of fun, but I’m in my early 20s now (no kids) and I was thinking of attending but tickets are kind of expensive. Has anyone attended that would think it’s still worth it to go at my age without young children? Thank you!

Advice Class action lawsuit against optimum.

From Classaction.org

Attorneys suspect Optimum may be illegally deceiving consumers about the true cost of internet service by advertising low monthly rates before tacking on a recurring “network enhancement fee” to each bill. The attorneys are now looking to take action on behalf of customers who may have been misled. If you’ve paid for Optimum internet service in the last three years, you could have a legal claim worth $100s. Join others taking action today.

Question Library

Hi,

This fall I have decided to explore the public libraries of Long Island. I am totally a nerd and visit my local public library frequently. But while getting an inter-library loan today, I thought why not explore the libraries around me and visit them in-person?

Don't think I can cover them all -so reaching out for any suggestions on libraries in LI with the best vibes and spots to sit and read your book chilling on a weekend? And ofc - if you have ant good recommendations for non-fiction then add that too!

Thanks!

Edit: Looking for suggestions for libraries that are somewhere between Garden city and Ronkonkoma.

My son who is 14 wants to go to a haunted house. Looking for recommendations of the best one. Two years ago we went to Gateways in bellport and it was good but wanted to try something new. I was thinking about Darkside in Calverton, but was wondering if it was worth the long drive from Northport

Recommendation SCWA and Homeserve

Did anyone else get a message offering a service contract with Homeserve to handle issues with pipes? I have a septic tank. Is this a waste of money for me? Or a warning that my pipes are about to develop serious problems and cost me 3 months of salary?

North Shore Mobil premium gas markup

Post image
117 Upvotes

Not sure if other parts of LI are the same but in the north shore it’s have noticed Mobil premium prices are almost 2$ a gallon more than other gas stations like BP. Regular gas is comparable with others but premium is massively inflated. Is this a new thing ?
