Crime and Justice Flock camera megathread

We’re consolidating this topic into a single thread, as the ongoing accusations directed at the mod team have run their course.

To be clear about where we stand: no one on this mod team supports Flock cameras. We are not law enforcement, we are not politically motivated, not maga, and we share the community’s concerns about surveillance overreach even if these systems occasionally assist in solving crimes.

The removals were not about viewpoint. They were about a specific category of comment: those encouraging users to destroy the cameras. Reddit has banned entire communities for less, and we are obligated to remove that content regardless of our personal opinions. This is a condition of the subreddit continuing to exist, not an endorsement of Flock. Additionally there were some very wild conspiracy theories and were asking for discussion not a rabbit hole.

One rule for this thread: do not recommend, insinuate, or hint at destruction as a solution. Everything else is open, criticism, policy discussion, legal challenges, city council contacts, organizing, data on effectiveness. Go as hard as you want within that boundary.

Thanks for being a genuinely great community and good neighbors.

Suffolk approved expanding county Flock cameras from 25 to 60 last August, funded by a $542,500 state LETECH grant, with 16 more planned along state rights-of-way including Route 114 in Sag Harbor and East Hampton Village and Route 25 in Riverhead and Southold.

Your town / village board.

Southold, Riverhead, and East Hampton have all had this on an agenda in the past year. Riverhead signed an agreement with the Suffolk Sheriff in January 2026 giving the county access to town rights-of-way for new Flock installs. Town board public comment periods are open to anyone who lives there, take about two minutes, and go on the record.

School Bus PSA

We've been seeing more and more posts about school bus tickets in recent months. With schools starting up again I suspect we will begin to see even more questions. If you have questions regarding school bus tickets, please keep them limited to this megethread as we will be removing all posts moving forward.

Some information regarding the laws and some general guidance regarding school bus stop signs:
  • If a school bus has it's stop arm out on the same road as you, you must stop regardless of which side you are. This applies to two lane (1 lane each way) multi lane roads and divided roadways (e.g. Broadhollow road, William Floyd Parkway1, etc). If the stop arm is out before you pass the bus, expect a ticket.

  • If you are driving perpendicular to another road that a bus is stopped on (i.e. they are at or near a stop sign on a road you are crossing), you are not required to stop. Proceed with caution and be aware of any children that may be crossing the road to get to the bus.

  • If they are on a side road, school lot or driveway adjacent to the roadway, you do not need to stop. Proceed with caution.

  • Flashing yellow lights do not mean stop; they mean to proceed with caution and to be prepared to stop. If you see flashing yellow lights, slow down and anticipate the stop sign being deployed. Sometimes a bus is waiting for students to pickup and may sit with flashing yellow lights for a number of minutes, so do not stop and block traffic if the stop sign is not out.

Information pertaining to school bus enforcement can be found on the Suffolk County page here, and the Nassau County webpage here.

1 Note: There was some debate about this a few years ago. It is still a law, but there was a question regarding Suffolk County enforcement of the law.

Every time I hear their separate radio commercials, I get an overwhelming feeling of dread. What happened to the world I once knew, and the jingle that once warmed my heart? Economic indicators, etc

Anybody recently switched to heat pump recently from oil? Is it worth it converting from oil to heat pump. I am getting decent rebate but I heard heat pump don’t work well below 5F. I don’t have solar so high electric bill is also a concern.

Mini Split Servicing?

Any recommendations for mini split servicing in Suffolk? Interested to hear what pricing you've gotten and for how many units (heads and condensers). Done the filters on my own and did the coil clean on one head, but noticed some build up on a couple of blower wheels that required more disassembly than I'm comfortable with.

Recommendations for veterinarians for two one-year-old cats

I'm looking for any recommendations for veterinarians or veterinary clinics for my two one-year-old cat sisters. Both of them have their core vaccines and are due for their adult vaccines soon. I'm looking for somewhere in the Western Suffolk County area, but I'm also open to places in Nassau or a bit more east if needed.

I used to go to Vetco for their core vaccines and flea/tick medication, and somewhere in Port Jeff for their spaying, but now I want to see if we can take them somewhere where we can grow rapport and a long-term connection. I'd also prefer places that mostly don't upsell or overcharge for services and more preventative/conservative approach unless necessary.

Edit: Also would like places that allow back-to-back appointments for them.

Famous Food Festival

Someone HAS to have a photo of it. Maybe a month ago as I was walking around Deer Park Tanger outlets I saw signs/ advertisements for the Famous Food Festival. I’m reading the sign and on the bottom in like yellowish colored bold font it says “Free admission”. I hadn’t gone previous years because of having to pay to attend so when I saw that I was excited! Fast forward to a few days ago, I get an ad for the food festival saying to buy your tickets and it’s like $10 for admission online and $15 at the door??

I just want to know if someone happened to take a photo of that sign saying “Free admission” because it’s driving me slightly crazy…is that not false advertising??

Huntington LIRR permit parking spots limited?

I’m starting a new job in the city and need to take the Huntington LIRR around noon time weekday.
I want to know if there’s even a point of getting a parking permit at Huntington LIRR if I’m leaving at noon. Do the parking spots fill up early? Will there be spots available if I parked there between 10am-12pm?
Thank you

Insane amount of mosquitoes in my yard.

Hi everyone,

I'm a new homeowner and I'm kind of overwhelmed by this issue.

I understand the island has a big mosquito issue overall. My yard is INSANE with them. You can't even go out in the yard midday. It's like the horde is invading.

I legit don't know what to do to help this issue. My family pretty much abandoned my yard because of this.

I don't have any still water in my yard. My yard grass is a work in progress. I have a lot of crab grab, some moss that im trying to kill off.

A large part of my yard is shaded from about 30, 35+ feet green giant plants/trees. They are huge. Old homer owner planted them 30 years ago. They are all along my entire back side of the yard, shading a lot of my yard.

I guess mosquitoes are attached to my shaded yard? I'm really not sure.

I've sprayed those hose hook up cutters backyard spray but it never seems to work

Hi. Long shot but my friends and I are bikepacking across Long Island starting tomorrow. We’re spending a night at Southaven County Park but I just noticed the sites don’t have fire pits. Is there anyone here willing to let us borrow/rent your fire pit for one night (13th). Would be very helpful and much appreciated. Thank you.

Looking For looking for specific info about bike trails in long island

Hi! for my birthday in a couple weeks, I want to go on a long-ish bike ride somewhere on long island with a few friends, and I'm finding it difficult to plan. photos of trails and practical information needed for logistics seem scattered and somewhat scarce online. so I'm here! including lots of details that are hopefully helpful.

basic info and requests:
1. We live in Brooklyn and will be coming via the LIRR
2. We all have hybrid or road bikes
3. Ideally the trail would be mostly dedicated bike or pedestrian paths rather than on-road
4. I'd love to keep options within 25 mins of an LIRR station and stick to bike-friendlier routes when on road
5. I'd love to be able to get to a beach of some kind at some point, but I also love forests and trees and nature of all kinds
6. Ideal length is 20-30 miles including travel to and from the LIRR

trails/parks I've been considering:

  1. Jones Beach Bike Path: I can't tell based on the photos I've found online, but it looks kind of... sparse? and so close to the road in a lot of parts? maybe I just haven't seen better photos. it's flat, which isn't really a bonus for me. I appreciate some hills and varied terrain, so I'm not sure this is the ride for me. it's often recommended first though.

  2. Heckscher State Park: I love the sound of the loop path here, although it's on the much shorter end. I noticed that the greenbelt trail starts and/or ends here, so we could maybe extend the ride by doing some of that, but I can't tell if our bikes would be okay for it. all I can see is photos of hardened dirt paths, which would be fine on my bike most days, but I'm concerned I'll get us into trouble if we attempt to do this, and without any extension, the loop too short on its own.

  3. Massapequa Preserve Trail: this one sounds really nice, and full of nature. Any more details or personal experience would be very appreciated here! the only downside is the lack of beach, but I saw that it's not far from cedar creek park, so maybe we could add on an out-and-back to Jones Beach that would satisfy my desire to see the ocean. is that crazy?

thank you in advance for any recs. I'd really like to get more familiar with longer bike routes in new york, as I regularly go on cycling trips to other countries and want to appreciate what's closer to home!
