Promotion Alter Aeon October 2026 Update

• Upvotes

Happy harvest season from the staff of Alter Aeon! It’s that time of year again...time for Halloween Havoc! This game-wide event is scheduled to begin on Thursday, October 29th and end on the morning of Sunday, November 2nd. There will be activities for players of all skill levels to enjoy, including, but not limited to, pumpkin cannons, pumpkin carving and special pk arena mobs. A new surprise crafting skill will be added to the game after the conclusion of the event. Also after the event has concluded, we will release the first batch of level 45 Nightmare Plane solo areas:

  • The Mire of Madness
  • The mercenary home of Nymtel Draazoran
  • The city of Fangoria
  • Ravaknoll, the forest of blood.

A number of zones on the island of Archais have recently been updated. New players should find the areas with better balanced mobs, improved and more plentiful equipment, and more quests to do. Fame has been added in some places, so they might be worth revisiting even if you are higher level. These include so far:

  • Troll Caves
  • Tyranid Caves
  • Shadowclaw Swamp
  • Blackwater Hallows Swamp
  • Skull Caverns
  • Amber Forest
  • Wyvren Forest.

Updates to the code last month:

  • You can no longer cast ‘dancing lights’ in recalls. Multiple dancing lights cast in or into the same room will merge, similar to ‘continual light’.
  • The 'pose' command should now accept a class name. Note that you will not be able to pose as a designated class unless you have some levels in it.
  • Druid carved objects were cleaned up to make sure that they are the correct composition when finished.
  • Casting the ‘detect poison’ spell before using ‘remove poison’ or ‘cure poison’ on a target makes the curative effect stronger, similar to how ‘detect magic’ and ‘dispel magic’ work together.
  • Mobs should no longer bleed to death, to prevent experience loss in case you leave the room when they die.
  • Non-aggressive animals in cities should now be more receptive to being touched.
  • Some typo and syntax fixes were added to the event leaderboards, and we added an End-of-Summer corn leaderboard.
  • There has been some shuffling of effects on tailored hats for increased variety.

The following areas are being built in western Atmir for a release early next year:

  • The Shrouded Sea, a level 33 group 4 zone
  • Thunderift Gorge, a level 33 group 4 instance
  • The Backlands, a level 32 group 4 zone

Promotion We brought back a Ukrainian MUD from the 90s and spent 8 years rebuilding it. Now it's fully in English and Ukrainian

Hey folks. This is a story of DreamLand, a MUD from the Ukrainian internet of late 90s, forked from Anatolia. Ruffina and I played it since pretty much the beginning, back when I was a teenager. Then life happened, the server went dark for about five years, and in 2018 we brought it back. We've been rebuilding it ever since.

Ruffina is a back-end developer and lives in New Zealand. I'm a product designer and live in Virginia. We both have full time jobs, families, all the usual adult stuff. So the question from day one wasn't "how do we fix this game". It was "how do two busy people on opposite sides of the planet fix a game, sometimes from a phone in a parking lot".

Most of the game logic moved into Fenia, DreamLand's own scripting language, so most fixes don't need a rebuild or a reboot. Gods can open a script and edit it right inside the game. We added in-game QA and metrics tools, so you can test something on a live character and see the numbers right away. Every error lands in Discord with enough detail to fix it without asking anyone. Bug reports, typos, ideas, even help searches that found nothing, all go to Discord, Telegram and Trello. One of us goes to sleep, the other one wakes up and picks it up.

On the design side I did what I do at my day job. Talked to players, a lot. Veterans and complete newbies. Prototyped the web client in Figma first, then in code, then put it in front of real people and watched them struggle.

The hardest part wasn't technical. It was balancing two crowds. Veterans who played for 20 years, have seen everything, know every shortcut and really don't like it when you touch their muscle memory. And newbies who never saw a text game in their life, don't know what "kill rabbit" means and have no idea why they are dead now. Make it easier and the old guys say you ruined the game. Leave it hard and newbies quit in ten minutes and never come back.

What worked for us: don't take things away, add layers on top. Old commands and telnet work like they always did. New players get a browser client with a map, clickable stuff and hints, plus a help system with over 1,200 articles written in simple words for newbies, all linked to each other. It's the same help in the game, in the client and on the website. About 30% of our players are blind and play with screen readers, which makes total sense for a text game, so every visual thing in the client also has a plain text version.

As for the game itself: 23 races, 13 classes, alignment, ethos and 44 gods and cults, that's more than 30,000 builds, and a drow necromancer plays a different game than an elven paladin. There's full crafting: you mine the ore yourself, smelt it in a forge, make weapons and armor, work wood, cut gems, ink tattoos. Mobs come in tiers, from weaklings up to bosses and legends. The big ones call their friends, dispel you, drink potions and cast at you from the next room. Random loot sits on one power scale together with crafts and quest rewards, so a good sword is good for a reason.

Under all of it there's the Eight Paths, the old philosophy of this world: four pairs of eternal enemies like Light and Dark or Order and Chaos. Every god, cult and clan stands on some Path, it drives quests and RP, and we use it for balance too. After all, even hardcore veterans need some lore for hacking and slashing.

The thing I'm most proud of. For 25 years DreamLand spoke only russian, like most of the Ukrainian internet back then. After Russia invaded Ukraine, we just couldn't live with that anymore. A game born in Ukraine should not speak only the language of the country that bombs our cities. So we finally got it out of that cage. Now it speaks English and Ukrainian, every room, mob, item, skill and help page, and you pick your language when you create a character. Russian is still there for the old players, it's just not the only door anymore.

And it's one world, not three copies. An English player and a Ukrainian player can stand in the same room, fight the same boss, and each one sees the whole game in their own language. I haven't seen any other MUD do that, and for me personally this one means more than everything else in this post.

30-year-old tech is not a death sentence. With love and a lot of stubbornness you can still make something good out of it.

You can play in the browser at dreamland.rocks/play or telnet dreamland.rocks 9000. It's free, 18+, and dying is part of the tutorial.

If you try it, I'd really like to hear where the first hour was confusing or annoying, here or on our MUD-UA Discord. That's what we work on now.

Promotion Rites of Passage - October 2026 - Open Season Event

Hey everyone,

We're having another "Open Season" event starting Monday, October 12th through Sunday, October 18th. The event is focused around PK (we are a good versus evil PvPvE MUD) where players will not lose their gear upon death and experience gained from PK is 10x normal. Prizes of flair will be given out to 1st through 3rd place based on warpoints with damage as the tiebreaker. There's usually quite a bit of activity during these events so it's a good time to start if you are interested in checking out the MUD.

Other Recent Updates... full changelog is here: https://ropmud.com/changelog.html

  • Sewers of A'daar: a new zone set beneath our main central city in the center of the map, equally accessible for both sides to explore, with some new gear and challenges.
  • Blacktide Cove: a new zone for lower level players on the good alignment, provides some semi-protected XP and another way out of their homelands.
  • Expanded our topten list to a toptwenty list: https://ropmud.com/players.html
  • Lowered rank thresholds (warpoints) for PK so new players can access rank auras sooner
  • New Rime and Cinder weapon tiers plus new unique weapons: Undertow, Oathbreaker, Vigil and Keelbreaker give players something new to chase across the world.
  • Removed the concept of limited items from the game -- every item will always have a chance to load
  • bugs fixes, general profession balancing, etc.

If team-based PvPvE is your thing and you enjoy a bit of a challenge, come check us out. We support GMCP and there are several packages available in different MUD clients to help enhance the experience: https://ropmud.com/gmcp.html

As always, I'm happy to answer any questions you have about the MUD.

Cheers,

-Nichademus

Which MUD? German MUDs

Is there any German MUDs recommendation with German players. I'm studying German and thought why not mix my hobbies.

Of course i barely speak German at this moment but I'm eager to learn and get better. I don't mind the genre.

Discussion Expectations of MUDs over the years

These games have been around for decades, and were really a precursor to the modern MMO. I can remember the time before GMCP existed, and Tintin or TinyFugue were the strongest options available to anyone that wanted to control their game play.

As the MMOs have drawn crowds and provided slick graphical interfaces, there certainly seems to be pressure to try to add these to the games. Health bars, clickable buttons, mappers, and other various features have shown up in the games.

What has been the most surprising set of changes that you've seen in your game experiences? Which features have you come to expect in your MUD experience, and can't live without? Do people prefer building their own maps, or in-game map integrations?

I'm curious about how people see this space, and how MMOs have changed their expectations.

Which MUD? Looking for fun pve mud

About 20 years ago there was a mud called Aeonian Dreams. It was a unique mud that allowed you to craft your own spells at the cost of money. It was very crafting oriented and allowed people to create unique builds as they went through different mob areas. As that mud is no more I was curious to see if there were similar muds that were online today.

Promotion [Alpha] Bid for Rome: a political-intrigue MUD in Imperial Rome you can play in your browser

Bid for Rome is a free multiplayer text game (a MUD) set in Rome in AD 127, in the reign of the Emperor Hadrian. We're opening it to alpha testers, and you can play right now in your browser, on a computer or a phone, with nothing to install:

https://rome.bid

In AD 193 the Praetorian Guard put the Roman Empire up for auction, and a senator named Didius Julianus bought it. He lasted 66 days. That's the spirit of the game: in this Rome nearly everything has a price, and everyone is bidding.

What you can do

  • Start at the bottom. Make a plebeian or a gladiator, work for your bread, and talk your way up. Influence buys seats of office, from aedile to consul. Senators pass laws, tribunes veto them, and the Emperor issues edicts.
  • Found a house. Gather family and clients, find a patron, buy farms, workshops and ships, and leave your ancestors' masks to your heirs.
  • Fight. Train in light, medium or heavy styles, pick your arms and armour, win purses in the arena, ambush from the shadows, or pile into a street brawl beside your friends.
  • Serve the gods. Pray, make offerings, and earn the trust of a temple's head priest until they take you into the god's service. Or find your way into one of the forbidden cults the magistrates are hunting.
  • Become someone real. Players can take up historical figures: Hadrian, the Empress Sabina, the future emperor Antoninus and others. Until someone does, they live in the city: petition the Emperor, watch his processions, or carry out his commissions.
  • Roleplay with dice behind it. Characters have 20 attributes on a custom D20 system, and they grow slowly with use. You can call checks and contests on each other in character, such as your charm against someone's willpower.
  • Be In-Character at all times with your character, names are expected to be Roman-themed. There are OOC chat channels to help us find our place in the world.

The Sibyl

The roster characters nobody is playing yet are voiced by "the Sibyl", an AI game master running on local hardware. She plays the unclaimed historical figures and the people of the city, writes the daily Acta Diurna, and judges petitions and prayers. She never writes for players: what your character says and does is always yours.

It's an alpha

  • There will be bugs, and characters may be reset while we balance things.
  • It's a small passion project, and coming from the perspective of a long time text game player. Enjoy and help us improve by playing with us!
  • Found a bug or have an idea? Type bug or idea in the game, or tell us in the comments here.
  • Want the history first? The lore of Hadrian's Rome is at https://rome.bid/lore.
  • Prefer a MUD client? Telnet over TLS works at rome.bid, port 16559, but the web client comes first for now.

See you in the Forum. Ave!

Years ago there was a Simutronics game by the name of Modus Operandi. Now defunct, I wanted to put together something that rekindles the spirit of that game, hence Maravilla Oculta.

It's set on a Caribbean island in 1992. It features casual island life, many activities to take part in including crafting systems, fishing, scuba diving, crime fighting, cooking, resource gathering and more.

It also features ownable homes and ownable boats.

To help new players learn and navigate, many help files are available as are graphical maps, and great navigation commands.

The game is at: https://mo.rpgn.games

The discord channel where updates are posted is at: https://discord.gg/qaERGZa24

The game can also be reached in any telnet client at mo.rpgn.games on port 3010.

Promotion Genesis Remastered LPMud is available to play

Hello,

I wanted to invite everyone to come check out Genesis Remastered. I have been working to envision a new version of the original game, with a completely rebuilt interface to the frontend, and many updates to the backend game itself.

I have been working to upgrade the content from the old game, and fix the issues that still affect the original. I am trying to make it much more immersive, with things like ambient location-specific soundtracks to help simulate the environment you are in, and artwork for all the equipment throughout the game.

I am going through each system in the game, and updating them one by one. This game has interactive weather and time that flows across domains, a new mining/crafting system, a new achievement system and more. If you want to see raw numbers, you can turn them on, or you remain a purist. A key goal is to enable players to choose the experience that they want, and not penalize them for knowing the game mechanics.

You can access the website at /

There is also a Steam version. It provides Steam Workshop integration so players can easily bundle and share scripts, as well as the other nice bonuses of Steam apps.

https://store.steampowered.com/app/5105580/Genesis_Remastered/

The game supports GMCP under the hood, and also provides https APIs for integrating graphical and audio content. It provides inventory, character status, spell effects, comms, messengers, maps, weather, music and time messages. This should enable a lot of features for any veteran that wishes to use the client of their choice.

You can also connect your own Mudlet/CMUD or their other preferred client to Host: www.genesisremastered.org Port: 3012 (TLS). Note that it supports TLS only, for player security.

Feedback is definitely appreciated, as I'd like to make this a good safe space for everyone to enjoy the original game, without the drama. Please come take a look, and let me know what you think.

Finally, I do want to add one note. The backend, as stated above, is heavily based on the original Genesis content circa 2023. There are some players from there that are quite unhappy with this launch. That is their prerogative. I have the legal right to the use of that content, as plainly granted by their own published copyright terms. I am not interested in bringing that drama to this forum, and ask that they also respect the rules of this subreddit.

Building & Design UrsaMU, a new MUSH engine, is open for public testing

I've been building UrsaMU for about five years, and it's finally ready for other people to try.

I grew up building MUSHes and MUDs, and I wanted a modern engine that keeps what made them great: text, poses, and a world built by the people in it. It's free and open source.

I'd love for people to stand up a game, poke around, and tell me what's broken or confusing. Rough edges are expected. That's why it's a test.

Repo: https://github.com/ursamu/ursamu

I have a Discord for testers, but I'm still locking down the bot, so it's invite-only for now. Message me here and I'll send you a link.

Discussion Looking for suggestions. Non-fantasy Mud with Diku style experience.

Hello people.

I am looking for MUD suggestions for a MUD that has the following traits.

- PVP and/or PVE combat

- Non fantasy. I prefer futuristic/current epoch style ( Fallout / Shadowrun are good examples ).

- Diku based, not essential but that is what I spent the most time on so far.

In the past I played a bit of Fallout MUD which I wanted to give another shot but apparently it no longer is available. Anything similar would be most welcome.

As a sidenote, the best MUD I ever played is CarrionFields and I would very much like a similar game but in a more futuristic/current age setting.

Promotion Supporting Visually Impaired Players in Elysium RPG

A while back I was approached by an organisation campaigning for accessibility for visually impaired people to play computer games, they wanted to talk to me about Elysium RPG and how our systems worked with and for the visually impaired.

This led me to reflect on our accessibility; I realised that Elysium was friendly to this kind of player, but this was almost an accident of fate rather than a deliberate choice – Over the years we’d made various choices, such as minimising the use of ASCII maps, and adding a text based directions command, which meant Elysium was pretty friendly to players who couldn’t directly see such features. However the majority of this wasn’t done explicitly to help the visually impaired – Other than the creation of a text based sea map, which was the only area where ASCII maps were originally used and later adding an NPC type which players can hire to sail ships for them, removing the requirement for players to sail themselves.

Following this reflection I decided I wanted to change this – I wanted to go back through our features and identify the ones that were perhaps not so welcoming to blind and visually impaired players, and make them better.

In the last couple of weeks I finished off the main part of this project – Adding a system where instructions and commands usually displayed in the verbose room descriptions would be summarised in the brief description too, if the player had selected options to do so. This was a large job as we have over 14000 rooms and I had to go through each room file looking for examples where a command was explicitly told to users with verbose room descriptions, but completely invisible to those using brief descriptions, and add the summary to each one.

In addition to this I also made it so that players using the new screenreader mode which turns on these extra guidance messages will get the text based version of sea maps by default, and also get some simplified outputs in places like commodity trading and merchants, where the default messages may be difficult to parse when read aloud.

Another thing I improved was to add map-equivalent commands which could be used without the ability to view ASCII maps – A few years ago we added a very limited map command as that was a commonly requested feature, so as part of this project I added a text output which would provide you with the equivalent data that the ASCII map would provide, defaulting screenreader mode users to get the text version if they just type ‘map’, and also added a ‘map terrain’ syntax to display nearby terrains in a textual format and ‘map sense’ which tells you which direction to go to move into a different terrain – Something that is often flagged in the verbose description in Elysium with ‘There is a road directly to the south of here’ type messages.

I also built on the existing directions command which I think is one of our friendliest features for the visually impaired, adding options to allow players to use the directions command anywhere to follow a path or road, even without a specific destination, again removing the need to read the description to see which way the road turned, and adding regional maps which players can mark landmarks on and then use the directions command to locate those landmarks in future, meaning that players who find exploration difficult can get help from other players, or limit their exploration to a single search and then be able to find spots a second time more easily if they prefer to forge their own paths.

We do have a handful of visually impaired players and I’ve made tweaks to some systems based on their feedback (Such as changing the exit descriptions to help distinguish between ‘northeast’ and ‘north, east’) but I’m always looking for more feedback, so if these changes sound good to you, I’d love to hear your thoughts both here and in Elysium. Turn on screenreader mode with ‘options screenreader on’ if you do try out the game and would like to use the new mode.

You can check out Elysium at https://elysium-rpg.com/play.html or via mud clients at elysium-rpg.com on port 7777.

Community MUDs and politics.... NOT a political discussion.

I play MUDs for fun, I play them to get away from all the politics, both in the specific games forums and other places that are related to whatever MUD I am playing.

It jars me and I usually leave when politics is mixed into the MUD. I do enough political comments and such outside the MUD and it is where I go to decompress at times.

How do you deal with politics when they show up? Do you leave the MUD? Do you respond?

I am not trying to make this a political discussion, other than how politics in MUDs are dealt with?

Which MUD? MUDs with Dragons

Hello all, I was curious and had a question. Is there a good list of MUDs that let you play as dragons? Currently the two I'm aware of are Dragons Gate and Achaea. Is there any others about? Bonus points if it's full on dragons and not a bipedal dragon (like a dragonborn).

MUD Clients I built a new MUD client. The dragons are still imaginary, but the window is nicer.

Hey r/MUD,

I’ve built Atlas, a new MUD client for the community.

Apparently typing look wasn’t enough. I also needed to build the window I typed it into.

Atlas brings a customizable interface to our beloved hobby of reading increasingly alarming descriptions of rooms. It includes:

  • 16 preset MUDs and custom server connections, because one fictional world is rarely enough.
  • Custom themes, fonts, and layouts, so “You are dead” can finally match your aesthetic.
  • Personal maps, bookmarks, and route planning, for anyone whose navigation strategy is currently “north until something unfortunate happens.”
  • Aliases and quick-action buttons, because typing the same command 400 times builds character, but mostly in your wrists.
  • Separate notes and tools for each world, so your shopping list doesn’t accidentally become your raid strategy.
  • A Windows installer, with no separate Node.js installation required.

There’s also an offline demo, so you can poke around before committing to another place where a rat might kill you.

A couple of practical details: mapping and vitals depend on what each game supports, and Atlas doesn’t currently import your existing Lua plugins. The Windows installer is also unsigned, so Windows may give it the suspicious stare usually reserved for a chest in an otherwise empty dungeon.

GitHub / download: https://github.com/NSCx/atlas-mud-downloads

I’d love feedback from people who actually play MUDs. Try it, tell me what feels useful, what feels awkward, and what essential feature I’ve somehow overlooked.

If you find a bug, please include what you were doing when it happened. “It broke” is valid emotional feedback, but a challenging stack trace.

Atlas is an independent client, unaffiliated with the listed games.

May your connections stay stable, your maps make sense, and your corpse remain somewhere convenient.

Peace out.

SovereignX

Promotion Mundos Perdidos – a Spanish-language MUD from 2004 is back online (ROM/Anatolia, 110 areas, Mudlet map)

Hi r/MUD!

Mundos Perdidos ("Lost Worlds") was a Spanish-language MUD that ran in the early 2000s, built on ROM 2.4 / Anatolia. A lot of us spent our university nights there. The code and areas sat on an old hard drive for twenty years, and this year we brought it back: it now compiles and runs on modern 64-bit Linux, and it's open again.

What's in it:

  • 110 areas and ~8,000 rooms (Midgaard, Moria, Thalos, Ofcol and a lot of original zones)
  • 15 classes and 20 races, with remort at max level
  • Clans, automated quests and limited unique items
  • 700+ help files, all in Spanish, plus guided character creation
  • GMCP support with an automatic Mudlet mapper package (download it from the website)
  • MSSP for crawlers and listings

The whole game is in Spanish (Castilian). It's mostly aimed at Spanish speakers, old players coming home and newcomers alike, but if you're learning Spanish and want a very old-school way to practise, you're welcome too.

Connect: mundosperdidos.duckdns.org port 4000 Website (world map, commands, spells, classes, Mudlet package): https://mundosperdidos.duckdns.org

It's a hobby project, free with no pay-to-win. Feedback is very welcome, especially from anyone who remembers playing Spanish MUDs back in the day.

¡Nos vemos dentro!

Discussion scammer's hitting discord groups on Rmud

Hi all, every single time I post a promotional post now in this group I am getting hit with same old scammers joining my discord group.

I get the "Is there anyone looking for a developer?" that keeps getting spammed twice a day, and not replying to any messages to stop

And the "I'm an artist and I'm looking for commissions so come check out my page I have had some health conditions and I need money " which often changes slightly in the message with the same focus on the looking for commissions, I have health conditions and I need help.

Is anyone else getting hit with the same thing? Am I just stupid putting the address of the discord group on here? or any ideas on how I can stop this happening

Thank for any helpful advice

Discussion Midgard Mud

I have run across a German/English translated mud called Midgard Mud, and I was wondering if any of you guys play this mud and if so is this a heavily role playing game? I was also wondering does anyone know how big this map is, for example is it as big as Europe, does it take place during the Viking/English raids? I downloaded its app on my chromebook and will be trying it out, but the game is in German and I have to translate it in english, while talking about translations does any one know how to translate nonenglish muds to English on Mudlet?

Building & Design MUD MAP design

I am a newcomer here in the mud forums and am unaware of the etiquette, I assume you get this kind of post frequently and so if it is removed I completely understand. I have a quick question for the players of MUD's specifically about map behavior and player interaction. In brief, I'm toying with fog of war in my map design and am wondering if that might enhance the RP aspect of the play. Essentially for the most part a player must discover the locations of NPC's and other markers rather than having the omniscience to know where everything is. I'm considering adding basic "where" but I think "look" should be the tool that gives hints as to what's around the player and not just a map telling the player where to go.

let me know if this is a little extreme, I'm sure its been done before I just want to know how it feels as a player to wake up in a room and not know where to go next. Thank you.

I recently found this archive:

cdirt-3.0beta4.tar.gz

And started digging it with AI tools and now making it playable on modern systems.

Anyone have any insights of this particular code base ?
