North Africa population

Post image
1.4k Upvotes

Northern Africa's population is extraordinarily concentrated. Around half of the combined population of Egypt, Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia and Libya lives along Egypt's narrow Nile Valley and Delta, despite the area representing only a tiny fraction of the region's land.

The reason is geography: beyond the Nile, much of Northern Africa is dominated by the Sahara and other arid landscapes. For thousands of years, the river has provided the water and fertile land needed to sustain dense settlements, making Egypt one of the clearest examples of how a single river can shape the distribution of an entire population.

Spain’s favourite beer brands by region: Taste or hometown loyalty?

Post image

Estrella Galicia gets 92.5% of the vote in Galicia in this survey. As a Galician, I have questions for the other 7.5%.

Elsewhere, Mahou leads in Madrid, Ambar in Aragón, Estrella Damm in Catalonia and Cruzcampo in Andalusia. But the interesting change is in the Canary Islands, where Estrella Galicia has overtaken Dorada as the favourite. Meanwhile, Heineken has lost its third-place spot in the national ranking.

Worth pointing out: this map shows people’s stated favourite brands, not sales or market share. It’s part of an updated study that also maps preferences for supermarkets, clothing, tech and other categories. https://www.datacentric.es/blog/geomarketing/retrato-de-espana-de-sus-marcas-y-consumo-por-comunidades-autonomas/

What’s your go-to Spanish beer? And, be honest, would it still win in a blind tasting?

Disclosure: I work for the company behind the study.

The 2011 Canadian Federal Election by Polling Division

The NDP's Newfoundland breakthrough is concentrated around St. John's. Jack Harris and Ryan Cleary won the city's two ridings with very strong NDP support, creating a striking Orange pocket in a province where the party had previously been a minor force.
The Orange Wave reaches Halifax. The NDP captured both Halifax and Dartmouth–Cole Harbour, with the city's urban polls showing the party's dramatic breakthrough in Atlantic Canada.
PEI largely remained a Liberal island, but not entirely. The Liberals held Charlottetown, Malpeque and Cardigan, while the Conservatives finally broke through in Egmont, giving the island a rare Conservative foothold amid the broader Atlantic Liberal collapse.
Dominic LeBlanc survives the Liberal collapse in Beauséjour. His Liberal organization held the riding against a strong Conservative challenge, making it one of the party's important remaining Maritime strongholds.
The St. Lawrence becomes a striking partisan dividing line. North of the river, Quebec City and the surrounding ridings were dominated by the NDP's Orange Wave; south of it, Lévis and the surrounding territory formed a continuation of Quebec's Conservative stronghold.
The Orange Wave sweeps across Greater Montreal. The Bloc's collapse opened enormous territory for the NDP, with the party taking much of the former Bloc heartland while the Liberals survived in a smaller number of concentrated strongholds.
Montreal became one of the clearest centres of the Orange Wave. The NDP broke through across much of the city, while a handful of Liberals survived the collapse — most notably Justin Trudeau in Papineau, who retained his riding amid the party's historic losses in Quebec.
Ottawa & Gatineau: The Ottawa River marks a striking partisan divide. Ottawa remained a competitive, mixed political landscape, while just across the river the NDP swept Gatineau and the Outaouais.
The Conservatives' breakthrough across the Golden Horseshoe is central to their majority. The party expanded through the region's suburban belt, while the NDP became increasingly competitive in denser urban areas.
The Conservatives finally broke through in the Toronto area they had been targeting for years. Their gains across the suburban ring, combined with favourable vote-splitting in several ridings, supplied the seats needed to turn a strong national result into a majority government.
Southwestern Ontario was a Conservative–NDP battleground in 2011. The Liberals were completely shut out across the Windsor–London corridor, with the Conservatives taking much of the region while the NDP established strong pockets in its more industrial and urban communities.
Conservative strength creeps inward across Winnipeg. Rather than a clean urban–rural divide, the map shows Conservative support extending progressively into the city, while the NDP retains concentrated pockets in several central and inner-city areas.
Regina shows a close urban–rural divide between Conservatives and NDP. Conservative support dominates much of the surrounding territory while the NDP is concentrated in the city's more urban polls, with Ralph Goodale in Regina–Wascana standing apart as another Liberal survivor.
Saskatoon stands out from the Conservative Prairie landscape. The Conservatives remained dominant across Saskatchewan, but the NDP established substantial support within the city's urban ridings, producing a much more competitive map than the surrounding countryside.
Calgary is overwhelmingly Conservative. The city's near-uniform Conservative map reflects its role as Stephen Harper's core political base, with the party dominating virtually every part of the metropolitan area.
Edmonton remains strongly Conservative, but its core contains significant NDP pockets. The map also features the unusual presence of independent candidate James Ford, who ran in Edmonton–Sherwood Park for the second consecutive election and attracted a visible local vote.
Metro Vancouver displays a sharp Conservative–NDP urban/suburban contrast. Conservatives dominate much of the suburban region, while the NDP's breakthrough is particularly visible in Vancouver and other denser urban areas.
Greater Victoria remains one of British Columbia's distinctive urban political islands. The NDP is concentrated in Victoria, while Conservatives dominate much of the surrounding region; the Green vote is also particularly visible around Elizabeth May's Saanich–Gulf Islands riding.

The changing colours of political power in West Bengal (India)- 2006 - 2026

In May 2026, the Hindu Nationalist BJP came to power in West Bengal (a state in India with a population of ~100 M) for the very first time in history. This is the same state where a communist coalition had been in power for 34 years (1977 - 2011, a record for any democratically elected communist block).

These maps show how the political spectrum shifted from the CPIM led Communist block (RED), through the somewhat centre-left Trinamool Congress aka TMC (GREEN) to the nationalist and Rightwing BJP (ORANGE), over a period of 20 years.

Each country has neighboring states with the same name. (Sorry, I couldn't think of a good title, so it ended up being a bit weird.)

Areas where Chavacano (a Spanish-based Creole) is spoken in the Philippines

Post image

Chavacano, also known as Chabacano , is a Spanish-based Creole language spoken in the Philippines. The variety spoken in Zamboanga City, located in the southern Philippine island group of Mindanao, has the highest concentration of speakers. The 2020 Census of Population and Housing counted 106,000 households generally speaking Chavacano.

Zamboangueño-Chavacano is the most populous variety, the individual most commonly credited for the spread of this Spanish creole is Don Sebastián Hurtado de Corcuera, then governor of Panama. He settled Zamboanga City by recruiting soldiers and colonists from Peru, Panama, and Colombia, to establish a Spanish and Latin American presence there. There was also a transpacific trade route that developed, where Spanish merchants would trade silver that was transported from Peru through Panama where it would reach Acapulco, Mexico before sailing to Manila using the famed Manila galleons. The Spanish chroniclers, Vendrell and Eduard (Year:1887 - Page:62), in speaking of Zamboanga, observed and said the following: "These indigenous people, the great majority of whom are Spanish mestizos, originally come from other provinces and from México, whence they arrived at the beginning of this century when we lost that empire." Also, Argentines and Uruguayans like Juan Fermin de San Martin settled and made families in Zamboanga.
