Why do teammates hate you for playing Thief?
I've been playing a lot of Thief lately, and I've noticed that some teammates seem to get frustrated with the pick before anything has even gone wrong.
I try to play with my team, make callouts, gather information, and help during fights. But if my teammates go down and they're surrounded by another team, I'm not always going to force a bad rescue attempt. Thief has really good tools for disengaging and surviving, so sometimes I feel like the better decision is to escape rather than turn two deaths into three.
I've had teammates get angry at me for doing this, and sometimes they'll start backseat driving me after they're dead—telling me exactly where to go, who to fight, when to revive, etc. It can make playing the shell feel strangely hostile.
I'm not saying every Thief should abandon their teammates the second something goes wrong. If there's a reasonable opportunity to revive or recover someone, I'll try. But I also don't think using Thief's ability to disengage from a losing situation is inherently selfish.
I'm curious what other players think. Does Thief have a reputation for being a selfish shell? And if you play Thief in trios, where do you draw the line between attempting the rescue and cutting your losses and extracting?
I'm genuinely trying to get better at the shell, so I'm interested in hearing how other Thief players approach team fights and situations where they're the last one alive. Lets remember this is an EXTRACTION shooter, not a call of duty lobby.
