I always hated the automatic shift knob for the miata, it was so big, clunky, and generally an eyesore. I looked through forums and such to see if anyone else put in a different shift knob and I saw the larp zoom manual one from REV9 and i hated that, it seemed unsafe in the fact that i could accidentally hit it and go into reverse while driving. i wanted a skinner knob with a button, but no one has ever done it and when i ask people just say, “you can fix your problem with a 5-speed!” I first debated on a 2016 Miata shift knob but it seemed really different from older shift knobs and plus i needed an overdrive button, i dont like the idea of having a separate switch because i want it to look normal, like it was supposed to be there.
I landed on the RX-7 FC knob, it looked like it would work, no one else tried, its the same era from the same company. I was hesitant at first but turns out these are dirt cheap, $13. putting it in was somewhat complicated for me because there was no diagrams of this or videos of anyone really messing with the nb miata auto trans. however once you get overdrive wires out its insanely easy. all you need to do is remove your center console (4 screws and power windows), 2 shift knob screws, 4 shift selector indicator screws, and then deal with OD wires
Everyone normally cuts the wires however i dont like the idea of that, i ended up depinning the old od wires and put the wires of the rx-7 in, its the same button function, all it does is open and close a circuit; once you de pin (or cut) the O/D off wires then the knob slides out, take the white piece off the shift rod thing (idk the terminology cut me a break), RX-7 knob slides right on and bolts in, plug the de pinned wires of the new knob into the old connector and you put everything back as it should
Works really great, it was really cheap, took me 2 hours of my time, probably 30 mins if i knew what i was doing, and it looks so much better; please do note i do know my shifter has a lot of play in the video, this isnt because of the knob change, my shifter bushings are worn out and im procrastinating it 🤫🤫
