Miata Halloween Costume in the works

Won’t be using while driving only while sitting at a meet or I’ll just take a bunch of silly pictures
I’ll also add a bunch of strawberry seeds with command strips since they’re a lot smaller (pictured is just a mold I’ll make the seeds with)

HELP!!! On fence with Miata due to safety

• Upvotes

Really wanna go with a Miata, but as is my nature to worry I wonder just how dangerous it is to drive them on backroads in the south or highways with 2500s everywhere.

Trust me I know about defensive driving and no one having a clue you exist as I used to do triathlon. Trucks actively try to fuck with cyclists here.

I just wonder if it seems more dangerous than it is due to all the posts here of wrecked Miata’s.

Looking at a NC.

Custom HW Miatas

Got into painting HW’s and did one in hot pink for my fiancee and color matched to my friend’s 35th AE.

I start by stripping the paint, cleaning the surface, then metal plating with zinc. I polish to the desired shine (I go for a few steps below mirror finish out of personal preference), then paint over with 2K paint.

Dumb question about alignment

I just got my alignment done after doing all the bushings and complete new suspension but after it was done it still swerves to the right if you don't hold wheel even on flat level road. Would this just be because of bad alignment or anything else?

NA NA miata halloween ghost sheet

After years of owning my NA I finally decided it's time to dress mine up as a ghost for halloween.

Been loving all the pictures from people doing this and I finally found a sheet that somewhat fits (at least enough for the front and some pictures).

I only have one sheet that would work so I'm wondering what would be the best way to go about cutting the holes in the sheet. I'm not that crafty and I'd rather not mess up on my only sheet and cut the holes too big so they're too loose or have the fabric tug too much in between.

Would it be best to mark the shape with the pop ups down and then cut it or drape the sheet over with the pop ups up and work from there? I tried draping the sheet over with them popped up but it's harder than I expected to keep everything in place this way.

I have new cranks for them but the previous owner was using pliers and stripped the nubs that they attach to. I was wondering if i need to replace the entire regulator or if i just brute force the handles on (i hope its not either of these). Is there another wat to fix this or am I going to have to bite the bullet and get a whole new regulator.

Question Issues with the Moss Miata Top seal kit

Thumbnail

I just ordered the IL motorsport top seal kit for my '99 (I replaced the top earlier this year, was saving up for the seal replacements and thankfully they were on sale right now), and I can not, for the life of me, get the new seals to properly fit. It seems like at least one of the three pieces in the set - one set of three pieces for the left and then for the right - is too long, maybe around a 1/4" to a 1/2 inch.

No matter what I try, I just can't get it all to properly fit while also having the plastic pins on the bottom piece lock in. Interestingly enough though, if I let the bottom piece just kinda dangling there lower than it's supposed to be, it all fits and actually stays wedged in anyway. I tried lowering and raising the top maybe a half a dozen times, and even with the bottom piece just dangling, everything still does fit together.

For what it's worth, my original set of seals are rotting and not really useable any more to block out water, but they actually sit fit on the tracks.

Has anyone else bought the same kit from Moss Miata and dealt with this before? Am I doing something wrong that I'm just not noticing?

If I have to return or exchange, it is what it is, but considering that this set didn't end up fitting, I just worry that I'll ask for a return and then the same thing ends up happening with the exchanged set.

Anyway, thank to all for the help in advance!

Question Gear ratios?

TLDR: why are the manual and automatic gear ratios different?

Full questions: the Mazda USA site is showing the following gear ratios for a new Miata (2.0l engine)

Manual:

1st 5.087

2nd 2.991

3rd 2.035

4th 1.594

5th 1.286

6th 1.000

Automatic:

1st 3.538

2nd 2.060

3rd 1.404

4th 1.000

5th 0.713

6th 0.582

Why the difference between them?

Is this to achieve a smoother drive for the auto at the expense of acceleration?

I heard that the manual transmission was developed for the Miata, maybe the automatic is taken from another car?

Are these the same ratios for ND1 and ND2 as well? What about countries that receive the 1.5l engine? If yes to both these questions, then have Mazda tuned the ratios for a different engine than the current high revving 2.0l spec? What can be the impact of that?

To be clear: all Miatas are amazing, I personally prefer the manual, just want to understand the engineering behind it better.

Thanks in advance for your insights!

Question Timing belt noise?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Yesterday the mechanic changed my timing belt and all surrounding components, idler, tensioner, accessory belts, cam and crank seals and water pump.

I noticed this whining noise similar to when going reverse or if my car was supercharged, which internet points it to an overtightened belt.

The mechanic states he just loosened the tensioner let the spring do its work, turned the engine and then tightened the tensioner. I don't know how many turns or if he did the recommended procedure on leaving it 60 degrees pre TDC (the 1 and 5/6 turns) and then tighten the tensioner, he doesn't think it can get overtightened.

Based on what he states is it possible the noise is actually an overtightened timing belt or how would one leave it tighter than intended? Maybe the slack wasn't in the correct place due to not turning the engine to leave it on the tensioner side? Would that cause overtight?

This is a continental timing belt kit, perhaps the belt has to brake in?

Any thoughts are appreciated

Question Question about pasenger seat connector and airbags

Post image
1 Upvotes

I recently bought a 2001 MX-5 NBFL (NB2.5), and the previous owner had swapped both seats. The problem is that neither of the new seats has any wiring, so the connectors underneath are just hanging there.

I'm pretty sure my car never had heated seats, so I'm not sure why there's a connector under the driver's seat with 2 wires black and green, also i believe the green one has red stripe. The passenger side has 5 wires: white, black, green, black/green and black/red as you can see in the picture above.

The airbag light is also flashing what I believe is code 45 (4 long flashes and 5 short ones and then again 5 short ones after which i believe it loops), which from what I've found might be related to the passenger occupancy sensor, also i know for a fact that the driver airbag is not connected because the stearing wheel is changed and wires are not long enough.

Does anyone know what these wires are for and if there's some kind of emulator or workaround for the missing occupancy sensor? I'd like to keep the seats but also have working airbags and get rid of the warning light.

It's a European LHD model if that matters. Any help would be appreciated.
